Alright let’s see how it ends

James Ancester

At the Afterlife, Night City's premier club for fixers and mercenaries, drinks are named after the often enigmatic and highly skilled edgerunners who frequent it. However, as there are no true living legends in Night City, the only way to earn a spot on the menu is to, and I quote: "Snuff it in mind-blowingly spectacular fashion". The "David Martinez" is shot of vodka on the rocks, topped with NiCola. Half Russian and Half Japanese, like his beloved Lucy.

This made Adam Smasher quite terrifying, actually delivering on his hype compared to the game. When everyone saw this, their first instinct was to go into the game to kill him. With Rebecca’s shotgun for good measure.

God this show is great can't wait to watch this. Also you should maybe do a sub or dub poll for Steins Gate. I think most people prefer the dub but just to avoid annoyance

RoZiiii

No happy endings in night city :(

Vali Sippola

Great discussion. And yeah, Adam Smasher is present in the game and actually has a pretty substantial connection with one of the main characters. So the show kinda serves as an appetizer course for the “main” story.

Fitting for this is an out of context quote from the game. Slightly edited to avoid spoilers: Character A: "A happier ending would be nice". Character B: " A happier ending? Here, for folks like us? Wrong city, wrong people. "

Scoola

A cool quote i heard about the Cyberpunk genre is that "You cant save the world, Try to save yourself." or something to that effect.

Khalid

Happier ending? here, for folks like us? wrong city. wrong people - Johnny Silverhand. sad times aside, thanks to the massive success of the game and the anime, the franchise is expanding even more to announce a live action project. and I couldn't be more happier, because Cyberpunk 2077 is my all time favorite game.

I LOVE that sequence of David’s final moment. How the blood splatter transitioned to shots of the city above. All I could think is “oh.. and so night city swallows up another victim.” There are plenty of shitty people in this show but the true villain was always the city itself. For me characters come before story, world building etc.and in recent years I’ve become a bigger fan of longer story telling. But not gunna lie I love these kinda series. Everything does feel ‘hopeless’ from the beginning and while some may end this series with a feeling of “well okay but what was point?” … sometimes just watching a bunch of flawed human burning fast but bright is needed. Also Trigger absolutely NAILED IT when it came to the presentation of this adaptation. While I can think of a few series that deserved the title a bit more I can see why this won anime of the year for 2022

Khalid

it's a quote from Mike Pondsmith the creator of cyberpunk world "Cyberpunk isn't about saving humanity, it's about saving yourself."

Khalid

Trigger did the show justice, I remember being worried they wouldn't be able to capture the feeling of the night city right, but oh boy it's pretty much 1:1 of the game down to the posters and lights.

kingkoopa98

Damn the ending of this show always hits different.

AryTheDog

they really hit gold with this show, short and great, not often you come around anime like that, that are also complete stories

astroplace

Now that cyberpunk is over will there be a poll to decide the next show or will it be second place show from the last poll?

oerwhat

Adam smasher doesn't deserve his own arc, he deserves getting beaten up with a massive didlo for killing becca

Arakis

9.9/10 ending. 8/10 overall. Realistically, Lucy either gets found and taken out by Arasaka or does something very bad to herself due to depression, if she's already seeing David's ghost. I didn't like her sunken eyes.

Daniel Ibarra

Not sure if you like games but I would highly recommend playing the game. It’s a fantastic open world game with a really good story.

Tyler Owens

My mom was killed tragically and suddenly two weeks ago. I had just finished watching this show too so now it hits extra hard, especially the scenes with David’s mom. Great reaction, lovely show.

Rayn

There was so much packed into 10 episodes. I didn't see the hype around how it got AOTY at first, but after watching it I can see why it won.

Oak

I definitely wouldn't say most people. Both sub and dub are fantastic. Having watched both plenty of times, I personally prefer the sub, but the dub is also up one of the best dubs out there. I wouldn't be upset at all if we end up with dub. There's great VA work in both, so a poll is a good idea.

Oak

So, now that we're done, I can talk a bit about some game tie-ins. Someone else mentioned Rebecca's shotgun, and you can in fact get it if you go to the base of Arasaka Tower. I think it's in a bush somewhere. Falco sends you David's jacket if you start looking into the story of David Martinez. You can also get a "David Martinez" drink at The Afterlife bar. There's a lot more, like being able to visit pretty much all of the locations from the show, but that's more of a, "the game did it first and the anime is just a great adaptation thing". There is a columbarium location in game that you visit for multiple quests, and in it you can find a niche for all the characters that died in the show, left by Lucy. The messages on each are as follows: David Martinez: "You didn't take me to the moon, but you were there with me." Gloria Martinez: "You were right. David reached the top of Arasaka Tower." Julio (The new guy that joined for that first job we see after David took over for Maine): "He blew us away with his enthusiasm." (Falco might have wrote this one, since I don't think Lucy ever met Julio.) Kiwi: "You taught me to never trust anyone in NC." Pilar, Dorio, Maine: "You were the only family I ever had." Rebecca: "I regret not finishing our conversation."

Marko

Great episode, rly love the talk about freedom. For me freedom is something like being able to take responsibility for my actions. That is in shortest way possible my take on it.

Emman Reed

really awesome and loved you ending commentary. Adam smasher also plays a massive role in the game as well so that may be a reason why he was so prominent here. I enjoyed this very much and look forward to the coming week of Goodwin :)
