Whoof, what a movie. It's not an easy movie to sit through, but it's phenomenal. So bleak and dismal and depressing, but despite all that still optimistic and even with a happy ending (Sort of). I often see people applaud the numerous long, single-take shots that run for minutes on end, but for me the most Striking element is the soundtrack when things get tense. That...NOISE in the Bexhill camp when Theo runs and the war is raging around him....it scratches at your skull. This film is an Experience.

Children of Men manages to be so bleak and yet so beautiful at the same time. It masterfully ratchets the tension throughout the entire movie through the use of the insanely long one shots. It doesn't matter that they are technically stitched together from several shots because they are done so well. And they are done to serve the storytelling, not just to do a cool shot. Those shots keep you squarely in the shoes of the characters and the chaos they have to get through until it finally lets up at the end of the movie. I loved this movie when it came out and I still do. Children of Men is a classic and only gets more impressive with time.

I first saw this in 2006, and it instantly became one of my top 5 movies of all time. Everything about this movie was fantastic, the music, the world building, the cinematography, the acting (the acting!) The long one shots definitely helped build the uneasy atmosphere where it was clear that no one was ever safe. Something that was shocking to me was the way they turned the real life small town of Bexhill-on-Sea into a nightmare "Fugee" camp where the guards have had humanity burned out of them.

This movie is a JOURNEY. I’m so glad you watched it, one of the most underrated films of all time IMO. I love a movie that makes you think. And, yeah, I will never have children either but really what would happened if there were no more? What if the world ended, not with a bang, but a whimper?

I'm glad that you got to see the movie. I don't go back to watch this movie very often, but I always feel the same when I do watch it again. I always get choked up when they leave the building and everyone has the same reaction (soldier, rebel, refugee).

I think the many children's voices at the end is a definite statement that the human race solved the fertility problem.

I first read it in book form (PD James) and then loved the film version. I think you might also enjoy the director's film Gravity, I watched it again last night.
