I’ll try to explain this spoiler free… Is he a new person? No… regeneration is a bit like falling asleep and then waking up with a different face and a slightly different personality. Think of it like puberty… his body dramatically changes, some of his likes and dislikes evolve or change, but at his core, he’s still the same person, with all of the same memories. In the classic series the doctors would literally fall to the ground close their eyes like they died, and then morph faces, wake up again (have a brief weird sporadic period where they act all weird, as the hormones and brain chemical balance adjust to their new format) and then go on being the doctor like nothing happened. This big epic final words thing, and explosion of energy from the doctors body is an invention for the modern series, to make the doctors final appearances more epic. Before Eccleston, past doctors didn’t seem to mind the change. Only this era treats it like a death of a character… it’s still the doctor… just with a different face, a difference sense of style, and different quirks to their character…

Also David tennant was a huge fan of doctor who as a child and he became and actor because he was inspired by the show. It was his dream to be on the series as a kid. He played multiple roles in the audio books that came out between the end of the classic series and the beginning of this series, and because of the shows cancellation, he thought that was the closest he’d ever come to achieving his childhood dream. But when the show was brought back with Eccleston, he asked for AN APPEARANCE on the modern series as a side character, and was flabbergasted when instead they offered him the role of THE doctor… I can’t believe I just typed the word “flabbergasted”.

40:45 - The first episode of Who I ever saw, (I think) was a Matt Smith/Jenna Coleman episode, so I went back and started from scratch. This means I was sort of "just binging through" the Eccleston and the Tennant episodes, but I got really impressed by the Tennant run, pretty early on. These first episodes are really good, but I didn't get really hooked on him until I watched it the 2nd time.
