I'm only at the start of your videos, so not sure if looked up the meaning of the title by now or not, but it's referring to when the bombs were dropped on Hiroshima. Japan was at its lowest point after the war (zero) and the godzilla attack brought them even lower (-1).

Glad you revisited Godzilla with this one and not Shin Godzilla. Don't think a bloody discharging tadpole for half a movie would have been a good reintroduction to Godzilla

The director explained the title, “The biggest [meaning] is how people rise up from a postwar Japan that is at zero, and then Godzilla arrives, making the situation even worse and more tragic." This movie really tops all other Godzilla movies with its story. Shikishima's expiatory journey to shake the dishonor of not fulfilling his duty seems so genuine and brings so much humanity into the mix. Godzilla haunts him like a demon continually punishing him for his dishonor.

"Minus One" refers to the fact that post-war Japan was at "zero" and had nothing. Godzilla brings them from 0 down to -1

That music hits differently, especially coupled with this modern remake. I grew up watching the old school Godzilla, and they dovetailed into my love of Dinosaurs (something that continues to this day with my paleontology studies). I never expected a faithful remake to happen, much less to be good. But this movie... my God it was powerful! The allegory for the war, personified by Godzilla, is powerful. But in this version, when we get to see the impact that the war had on the people, with Godzilla furthering it, it was absolutely gut wrenching. I know that, historically, Godzilla movies have become progressively more... silly. And that's okay. It's a part of that entire mythos. But with this movie, I sincerely hope that if they do make sequels, that they maintain this gravitas. I'm glad you enjoyed the movie, and that it hit you like this. I suspected that it might, at least in as far as what the movie presented to you. But I do want to thank you for sharing that bit of family history, it was wonderful to hear it.

Holy Crap! I didn't expect this reaction. Amazing. As a Godzilla lover going back to the 70s, this is one of the best. Absolutely love it.

What a film, I was amazed, minus one refers to the bucket of tears I had after this film! How do they do it, a monster that never gets old, a concept that continues to stand and be fresh and innovative, a storyline that I was completely invested in, poor guy dying inside from shame, consumed by nightmares, finally earning back redemption. 2nd favourite monster movie, Aliens was very lucky to hold the top place.

I felt like i said something because of the speech the guy gave about not having ejection seats and then Tachi said "one more thing" I swore I said "ejection seat?" but when I watched the edit I was like "oh, should've said that thought out loud"

There is a black and white version called Godzilla Minus Color. I think it adds a bit more to the movie. Something to check out if you have time.
