John Linnell from They Might Be Giants performed that little "Making Up A Song About Coraline"

Nathanael Fuller (Polygon Wizard)

Based only on the thumbnail, I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that Angela really enjoyed this delightfully dark and weird little movie.

I love the spooky title card! Although that jingle sound slow-down really threw me for a second when it first started ...

Jaime Unson

Hi Angela! If you want to know how Coraline was made, hop over to LAIKA Studios channel here: https://youtube.com/@laikastudios Coraline was their first feature film.

David Plunkett

The amazing animation was astonishing in the theater in 3D.

I repeat my recommendation for "Kubo and the Two Strings." I enjoyed the story more, and the animation is also astonishing.

Oh this movie is something SPECIAL. The entire film was made with stop motion using puppets and models, not drawn animation. Early in production the idea was that the "real world" would be stop motion and they would use CGI for the "other world", but the first reactions was that the real world looked SO MUCH BETTER than the other world. It completely lost the magic of the other world looking like a fantasy, so they decided to use stop motion for the entire film. The story is extremely faithful to the original story. I'd say moreso than "Stardust". There are some changes -- Wybie is a completely original character -- but they are merged INTO the story instead of changing the story. Neil Gaiman had trouble getting the original story published because it was thought to be TOO scary for kids. He told his editor to read it to her daughter, and if she was scared then he'd drop it, but if she liked it then they'd publish it. The daughter wasn't scared so they went ahead. ....but a few years later, when the daughter was older, she admitted that she was actually TERRIFIED but didn't want to admit it because she HAD to know how it ended.

Josh Harrison

Harry Selick (who directed this) was also the director of "The Nightmare Before Christmas". He is *the* name when it comes to stop-motion animation.

"Paranorman" is another stop motion film by this studio, and also Halloween-y in theme...

Notes from a Coraline fan: 1) This and the next point have been mentioned by others, but they bear repeating: this was entirely stop motion - Laika's specialty. Definitely watch Kubo & the Two Strings. I love Coraline, but Kubo is my favourite Laika and was robbed at the Oscars by Zootopia. 2) Wyborn was entirely a film-original. In the book, Coraline's only steadfast ally was the Cat. I am a little sad that we miss out on more Coraline/Cat moments because of Wybie's presence, but admittedly they did integrate him seamlessly into the plot and tone. 3) Spink and Forcible are played by an incredibly famous British comedy double act known as French and Saunders (Saunders is probably more famous abroad for playing the Fairy Godmother in Shrek 2). In real life, Dawn French is short and fat, and Jennifer Saunders is taller and slimmer - Spink and Forcible's appearances were based on an exaggerated aged-up version of the pair, but they voice the wrong ones. Saunders voices the squat Spink, and French voices the taller Forcible. They are also not sisters, but according to Gaiman, a couple. 4) About the parents not learning a lesson, I almost think the lesson was for Coraline - that appearances can be deceiving. Not just that the Other Mother seems nice but is cruel, but that the reverse is true of her real parents. Consider the following causes of stress for Coraline's real parents: they have recently moved house which is stressful enough even without the bug, wiring, and leak problems; her mum was in a car accident that caused her to need a neck brace; this is set in the States so presumably that comes at great financial cost; they both overworked with a looming deadline - so much so that her dad has constant eyebags. Honestly, the fact that they were only a little dismissive and couldn't make time for Coraline is kind of remarkable. Coraline sees her real parents as unfun and not making time for her, when in reality they are busting their asses to keep everything together for her, and the moment they have even a little downtime, her mum gets her the specific gloves she pointed out and they do gardening with her like she wanted. Obviously this isn't how I felt when I read the book as a kid. I think I'm getting old. I can't watch School of Rock anymore without the constant nagging thought of 'Sarah Silverman is completely right though.' Anyway, justice for overworked, injured, stressed out parents trying their best!

Just gonna assume no full length for this one? No biggie if not just don’t wanna miss out on it if I can help it!😂😂

I would love to see the corpse bride. It’s a beautiful and great movie !!

XanderWhat

There’s a full length! It was posted a little bit before the edited version https://www.patreon.com/posts/112460423?utm_campaign=postshare_fan

Ray (Fanporium)

There's a great little 10 second short on the stop motion animation. Must have taken days to create, but so worth it. https://www.youtube.com/shorts/y-S0IZVyT3I If you want a creepy good time, google "other mother cosplay?"

I’m way too deep of a fan of Neil Gaiman, but I have to add this… This film reminds me of one of Neil Gaiman’s least known works…Mirrormask. He wrote that script and the novel Coraline at almost the same time, and there’s many themes the two stories share. The film was directed by Dave McKean, a frequent collaborator of Gaiman’s, and the main artist behind the unique covers of The Sandman. It was his first feature film. I’m not necessarily suggesting doing a reaction of it…it’s a very little known film and probably won’t draw people in…but for those who enjoy Gaiman and unique animation, it might be a fun thing to watch: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OAJOWr_HV1s

I love this movie, but I still wonder why it was rated for 6 year olds in Germany :')

"For those who know: JERK WAD" is an annagram for "DARK JEW", people could entered that in 2009 on a website to win limited edition Coraline dunks. they go for 1500$ and more on ebay nowadays

Dumaspeaks

This troll would definitely recommend "Paranorman" and "Monster House" for spooky animated movies to watch.
