Before we get into this ... the actor playing Shakespeare is the late Maggie Smith's son. I hope you love this ep as much as I do Angela. It's a great ep, but it's not everybody's favourite in a top-heavy season. I can't wait for next week now!!

Azmat Mahmood

This is one of the weaker episodes of this series but it's still really good, which just shows how great series 3 is. I also can't wait for next week, one of my favourites.

This was a fun episode, if not particularly consequential. All the Shakespearean puns were entertaining, and this version of Shakespeare was definitely charismatic. I like Christina Cole, the main witch, a lot. She's had a solid career but I thought she might really blow up after seeing her in Hex. I think Freema Agyeman really sells being smitten with the Doctor and trying to figure out whether he's into her. And I like her being smart and thinking through problems quickly. Meanwhile, she handles Shakespeare's flirtations well, and with confidence she absolutely should have in herself.

The ghost of Master Fatman

In your brief memorial for Mr Stoker at the beginning, I was reminded of a neat reference: the guy who was killed by a space vampire happens to share a name with the author of Dracula

Joe Nutter

Are you sure? I just went too look that up and it doesn't say he is her son.

Notes from a Doctor Who fan: Not a lot to say about the episode so, this'll be pretty brief. 1) Obviously you now know that the witches are from Macbeth, but while no one needs to read all of Shakespeare's canon, I genuinely think you might get something out of at least reading a brief summary of the Big Plays. Shakespeare is arguably the most influential writer in English language literary history and a lot of works throughout the last four centuries have referenced either his work itself, or works that reference his work. Hell, the Lion King is just Hamlet but with animated lions and a kid-friendly ending. Some people can get snobbish and intellectually self-superior about classical works, which understandably turns people off from them, but if you love stories or are in a career that involves extensive media viewership (both of which clearly apply to you), it's pretty cool to be able to spot the roots of so many narratives. Spending an afternoon going for a wiki-walk and learning about bored fairy monarchs messing around with human love-quartets for fun, or cross-dressing lawyers in Merchant of Venice, or the representation of black and Jewish people at the time - it might be interesting. 2) It's easy to forget that as dire as representation can be today, it was worse 15-20 years ago. Yet New Who provided us with a black companion in Mickey from the first season, then Martha as a full-timer in season three, while simultaneously not making a huge deal out of it AND not ignoring it either. While the show has never been perfect when it comes to representing everyone, I think it's worth noting and crediting that the revival never shied away from black main characters and addressing how that might affect their travels through space and time. (Future seasons also look into similar themes in interesting ways.) Also a fun F-You to the racists to note that while the lead may be straight white boy (though consummate ally) David Tennant, season three has a majority black recurring cast. 3) The recording space is looking great! Can only imagine how annoying it was to get those signs placed perfectly for the shot. Well done.

JK did nothing wrong

Love’s Labours Won is thought to be an actual lost play of Shakespeare, the title was found a list of plays from a printer selling Shakespeate’s plays during his lifetime. But no copy of any of it exists.

Josef Schiltz

"The plays the thing wherein I'll catch the conscience of the king" is from Hamlet and the witches are from Macbeth. The Sycorax were the aliens that were destroyed by Torchwood in The Christmas Invasion and also the witch mother of Caliban in The Tempest.

DarkStar 57

I'm glad you mentioned this! Particularly Point 2. I recall how much of a fit a lot of "fans" threw when Martha was made a companion calling her all sorts of horrible shit from a "Rose downgrade" to other more racially charged slurs and names. Was a really shit time (particularly as a black fan of the show myself). Martha deserved so much better.

"Sectioned.." a UK term for "Detained under The Mental Health Act.." i.e. carted off to a psychiatric facility for compulsory assessment and treatment. Shakespeare is much appreciated by the Klingons who claim him for their own - remember the line in Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country: "“You have not experienced Shakespeare until you have read him in the original Klingon.” "The plays the thing" is from Hamlet and Martha's joke is a pun on Bard and 'barred' which is what happens to you if you cause aggro in a pub and the landlady stops you from entering the premises again. The fella who played Lynley (the poor sod who drowned while walking) is one of the late, great Maggie Smith's sons - Professor McGonagall in the HP movies! Small world, huh?

Ben

the OP has mixed Shakespeare up with the guy who got drowned, he is the one who is Maggie Smith's son.

Meredith Grace

William Shakespeare was the best play-write in history and properly the best male writer of all time, he understood words in a way others did/do not and that's what made/makes him an a enigma reeling people into his plays and his story, loved this episode and I am happy that they made William Shakespeare a serious version, that the show didn't go comedy with the character and that he got along with Martha and the doctor.

Frank Izaguirre

Thou speak’st so confidently, yet wisdom hath fled thy tongue as quickly as it dared approach.

Josef Schiltz

Martha is one of my all-time favourite companions and Murray Gold's theme gorgeously becomes Freema.

Kevin

Yes, you pronounce it correctly. "Darling" is the best parallel of the sound "Dalek".

Josef Schiltz

Ah, yes. The fellow that 'drowned' held the position of Master Of The Revels and he could censor any play before it got to the stage. Originally, he was responsible for overseeing royal festivities and the task of overseeing the correctness of any theatre performance was a later addition to this role. Basically, he was PC Officer to the Crown.

Molto_Benny

"I don't think you ever forget your first companion either" Very true! As it turns out, Martha was actually the first companion I was introduced to, and she ended up becoming one of my personal favorites. Some friends of mine wanted to watch the show with me, but I wasn't sure if I'd like it. To convince me, they put on a particular episode that comes later (don't worry, I won't say which one). It's widely regarded as one of the best episodes of Tennant's run as the Doctor, and it's the one that got me hooked on the show like a decade ago. Oh, and to explain Martha's joke at the end, Shakespeare is sometimes referred to as "The Bard of Avon", Avon being his birthplace. Martha used "bard" as a play on the word "barred", which is a synonym for the word "banned". Also, I'm not sure if you've watched it or not, but if you're looking for a new show to watch after Doctor Who is done, I'd recommend Supernatural. I won't go into too much detail, but it's 15 seasons and it's very good. Cheesy at times, but good.

Anders Thomsen

At this point in time, JKR hadn't shown her true colors. Given David Tennant's stance on trans rights, I would imagine that he regrets that line now.

Caleb Fairchild

As an American, I've always said Dalek like Darling

Stu Kay

@all Yes, I'm sorry I attributed the wrong role to the incorrect actor. Thanks to those who have both corrected and clarified my comments. I should not be allowed on Patreon after midnight.

Stu Kay

A valid point, but Angela's vids release at ~midnight for me. Lesson learned.

Carl Wilson

Omg I totally had forgotten Sycorax is from The Tempest - I never understood why Shakespeare remarked on it in this ep. Thankyouverymuch!

Carl Wilson

Ah, so having Cole play a witch here after Hex was a bit of a wink, I gather.

Carl Wilson

This ep is a little hokey but as a big Shakespeare/theatre nerd, I think it's beautiful the way it pays tribute to "the power of words." and you definitely get the vibe from Tennant as an actor how much he really feels that theme and those lines.

Josef Schiltz

Prospero: Hast thou forgot the foul witch Sycorax, who with age and envy, was grown into a hoop? Well, it was one of Shakespeare's last plays, maybe the last that is said he authored alone, so it's not surprising that he would be unfamiliar with the name at this time. 👍

James Fleischman

As iconic as the Witches are in Macbeth I still can't help but think of the version of them in Black Adder.

monulito

"Good old JK" "AAAAAAI don't know about that but like Expeliarmus YES" lol love it

monulito

why say that? you can talk about it without confirming, leave it open, let her find out IF there's a pay-off...

John Williams

I agree. She did nothing wrong. If many in the trans community had their way, gays and lesbians would be trans before or during puberty. As a matter of fact European nations have stepped back from the practice.

Ryan Fisher

“Sectioned” in this case means taking Martha into custody for psychiatric evaluation.

dwp

Although this episode was written by Gareth Roberts so there's a weird coincidence there (I won't go too much into it but he has similar views to JKR). Brings a new meaning to thr throwaway line about men dressing as women.

Darren Withers

They just can’t help themselves bringing up future events in the comments! Space Monkey Mafia should know better than to get involved, too. He was one of the first to spoil in the Doomsday comments and get roasted for it.🤯 I had a feeling SOMEONE would do this as soon as I rewatched that scene.

This episode touches on Who lore that the show itself never directly addresses, but can be useful background knowledge to have - the story goes like this - In the beginning of the universe all was chaotic and wild. The rules of the universe were prone to sudden changes, and alongside the usual forces we know of today like gravity, there was the magical field. Species which evolved in these early years of the universe naturally made use of this field, and they tended to be violent and aggresive with it, that included the people who would be the Time Lords. This era also spawned a lot of horrible things, the Carronites of this episode are one such beings, but there was much worse than them, such as the spider like Racnoss and other monstrosities of legend. The Time Lords eventually put a stop to all this, they reordered the entire universe and made it stable, and they reduced the magical field till it was a neglible force almost undetectable. But species who evolved to use it still could in lesser ways, this is both how the Carronites can do 'magic', and why the Time Lord technology includes telephatic circuitry and interfaces and why the Doctor exhibits some telepathic powers. The manner in which the Time Lords created our present universe was by means of a structure called the Web of Time, it is what holds everything in place, however in order to do so some things within the Web have to always happen, these are the Fixed Points in Time. Breaking enough of these, or even just one crucial Point can collapse the entire Web and plunge the universe into pure chaos and eventual total collapse. So when the Doctor says of the Carronites, "that's old magic" he isn't kidding, its from the very beginnings of the universe.

Even with a Time Machine, there's some things you can't see coming
