I really appreciate that I can't predict your reactions! This is one of the eps I tend to skip when rewatching, and it's fun to get a more appreciative perspective on this - and certain other eps so far - through your eyes. Just when you were so annoyed with Zhaan, she kicks it in the ass. Everyone on this ship is flawed, and everyone has kick-ass moments. No one-dimensional characters allowed, including the puppets. Perfectly good and perfectly villainous characters are both kinda boring - see Maldis.

Zhaan being scared was darker than you think. It wasn't about failing or that the others might die. It was the knowledge of what it let out of her the first time. This was another opportunity for her darkness to get out and another chance to slip off the wagon so to say. It's says even more that she was willing to do so again for the crew with the fear that this could be the time the inner demons gets loose for good.

I always enjoy the Maldis episodes, partially because I enjoy how malevolently campy Chris Haywood’s performances are, but also because it highlights how dangerous Zhaan can be in contrast to her more serene nature she usually projects. I just adore Virginia Hey and love when she gets to take center stage.

Great observation! I think that's also behind her willingness to remain behind as the painting space collapses - she thinks it would be better to stay behind than risk unleashing the demons she had been forced to once again brush up against.

I kind of felt it was a little bit of penance for what she had done but also a bit nihilistic pragmatism that this would be safer for everyone else if she was no longer a danger to them.

I know a lot of people don’t like the Maldis episodes, but I liked this episode from start to end. It showed me that anyone could return.. and the mystery of the episode leading up to it being him was good imo.

It's a good episode if for no other reason just to remind you that every character our heroes encounter could come back and a lot of them actually do . It keeps you expecting unexpected .
