Oh I'm so excited for the laughs and tears that are coming in the next couple of episodes.

Yes, this is a good episode but definitely reached a bit to make sense (Even in the Dr Who Universe). So, one theme that sticks out for me as I rewatch these with you is the triumph and survival of humanity that The Doctor sees in humans going forward and through future history.

Lots of people are down on this episode, which I've never understood. It's not outstanding, sure, but it's a perfectly workable bit of entertainment with some great character work for Martha specifically. We're about to enter what's arguably the longest continual run of top tier episodes the show has, so maybe it just suffers from it's proximity. On the subject of Life, the Universe and Everything, references to Douglas Adams might be more apropos in Dr Who than in general media. During it's original run he wrote two scripts for the show and co-wrote another, and worked as the script editor for season 17 (1979-80). Safe to say they might consider him 'one of the family', so to speak.

I think this is a great episode. You get a bit of story arc progression with the stuff around Martha's mom, but otherwise it's just a fun romp. It's largely self contained, the "baddie" doesn't have established lore or history, there's some minor "fun with time travel" stuff, and in the end the "baddie" is just a misunderstood life form lashing out after the humans thoughtlessly harmed it.
