if I recall the d’argo/chiana thing kinda came as a surprise to us also, or at least it did to me lol. this ep was originally planned to be the premiere, at least the parts on litigara. kinda really glad it wasn’t.

It absolutely surprised me. I was so invested in John x Aeryn at the time that D'argo x Chiana seemingly came out of nowhere, and yet I was totally into it. Farscape really does have a knack for radically altering its trajectory on a dime and being able to fully send it. Even in a post-AGOT world, there are still things I am kind of amazed Farscape was able to pull off.

As Summer said, this was the original season premiere (The Litigara story) It was originally titled Re:Union, It was a late decision by Sci-Fi network, who felt fans wouldn't wait another week to find out what happened to John and Dargo, and the baby. So they moved ep 2 up to the premiere. Of course they didn't want to lose a whole episode, so they created the framing piece with John and Zhann on the Pod, (like how they used the original pilot of Star Trek in a later episode)

Not the greatest episode but a great performance from Virginia Hey as you said! It was interesting getting more perspectives from the supporting characters in this episode. As many have stated the latter half of this season is incredible and I’d say from episode 10 onwards it’s nothing but absolute banger after banger of episodes I can’t wait for you to see how it all unfolds!!!!

I wish the production team had found a way to use the Litigara material without retraumatizing Zhaan in the present. Having established that John and Zhaan are stuck on the transport pod for an extended period, why not have Crichton simply coax the story out of Zhaan without making her nightmare a recurring problem? Also, the sequence in "Mind the Baby" in which Moya comes under Sheyang attack? That was D'Argo's nightmare. That scene cuts to D'Argo still comatose on the hidden asteroid base with Crichton.

From episode 9 to episode 22 of this season, there isn't a bad show. I'm so here for this Farscape ride!

Notes from a Farscape fan: 1) I think you may have missed it in the moment, but when Chiana says 'I will' in order to volunteer as Zhaan's counsel, Rygel says it too. This is one of those episodes that cemented my much publicised love of Rygel as a character. Zhaan pegs his drinking at the beginning of the episode as anxiety over their missing crewmates rather than his usual hedonism; the aforementioned volunteering to help, even if he didn't know about the 'die if you lie' caveat; and him holding Zhaan's hand in the cell. Another highlight on Farscape's ability to form meaningful relationships between all characters - it becomes increasingly clear that Rygel's relationship with Zhaan is genuinely friendly. 2) Another example of Farscape really sticking with Moya being an independent character with motivations and relationships, likes, dislikes, opinions and petty outrage. Why did Moya change her mind and stick around? She already knew that Chiana was devoted and loyal and kind, so it wasn't hearing that on the comms, so what was it? It was because she overheard a pair of smug lawyers acting superior, and she could hold off one more day to help out the crew she cares for take them down a peg or two. 3) The Farscape crew runs the full gamut of the D&D alignment chart, but perhaps instead of Good to Evil, it's Honest to Shady. But, like all the best crews that do this, they still all fight for each other. Rygel and Chiana are very much on the Shady end of the spectrum, and this episode gets to show them using their specialisms for the good of the crew. It reminds me of another Claudia Black franchise in that regard: Dragon Age. I just absolutely love a crew where you can have 'bad guys' and 'good guys' united to the same cause: the crew.

It’s only just now that I realized that the strategy of ‘slap a framing narrative on and creatively edit out the boring stuff’ was something that the Farscape writers did at least a couple of times for problematic scripts that weren’t quite working out (The most famous example of them doing that is in Season 3, but that’s all I’ll say about that). I suppose it makes sense they would go that route once you realize just how often that they wound up employing framing narratives for various other Farscape episodes (including some of its best).

I'm glad to see you finally admit that. I watched some of your earlier reactions where you talked about how opposed you were to characters getting together. And then I watched your reactions to Avatar and Firefly and Farscape and Fullmetal Alchemist, and it's very frequent you're asking for someone to express their love to someone else. It's not bad.
