The whole series is filled with a lot of religious symbolism (ex: Ed looks like he's praying when doing alchemy, the symbol on the back of his , but something I didn't catch the first time until rewatching with you was that the main crux of the story revolves around a Father (Hohenheim), Son (Ed), and a (holy) Ghost (Al).

Pretty much the only reactor I’ve seen who guessed what Ed would sacrifice before it happened! I feel so stupid in comparison that it was something I never saw coming back when I first watched this 🤦🏼‍♂️ and what a line from Ed about “couldn’t save a little girl” 😭

John Rivera

My favorite little detail was how Father's door was blank showing that he truly learned nothing

Aside from it being a poetic thing that Ed gives up his alchemy, it also makes sense for equivalent exchange. What they gained in the first place for their bodies was the complete knowledge of alchemy, so logically, if he gives it back, he gets their bodies back. The dwarf being sent back into the Gate is because he was MADE of that alchemical total knowledge, so now he goes back into that nonbeing, just returned to knowledge with no physical body. That's why he says he'll be trapped.

And so the Symbolic Homonculus Deaths come to an end. In honor of that, let's count them down! (sorry. long comment. sorry.) 1. Lust is defeated by Mustang's love, which drives him to get up and fight. 2. Gluttony was devoured. 3. Envy dies after being seen for what they really are. Envy is based in self-loathing and insecurity and masking that with grandiose posturing and mocking others, so being seen and understood really is the ultimate insult. 4. Sloth dies from being overworked - at the hands two men who both embody true hard work, not the facsimile that Father sees as being a cure for sloth. 5. Pride dies by humiliating himself. 6. Wrath dies in peace - his wounds dealt by a man who let hatred consume himself and then turned away from it, as well as members of the military he used as an instrument of hatred. (As an aside, Greedling takes his Ultimate Eye in righteous anger at Fu's death, rather than just consuming hate.) 7. Greed dies selflessly. Greed, who is Father's desire for a community and family, sacrifices himself so that the ones he loves can have those things instead... even if he can't. And, as a bonus: Father, who lusted and hungered for power, was envious of humans and the bonds they create, yet was too lazy and prideful to actually connect with humans and instead took out his wrath on them while greedily hoarding his "family" of homonculi who he didn't actually love... Father, who saw his quest for knowledge as the supreme mission which would excuse anything... dies without having ever learned anything. At the hands of Ed, who does learn the lesson of this show: Knowledge and power are tools, but the bonds we form with each other are the meaning. This was way too long, but hey, it's the penultimate episode. Thank you so much for going on this journey! It's been incredible to watch you go through this show! One more episode to go ahhh

One thing that has always bothered me is the evident metal sticking out of Ed's shoulder. He still had the artificial socket for his automail arm when his real arm was restored. That must be unbelievably painful. Having it extracted too... yeesh.

Lachlan Smith

There's a little bonus in the Manga of Hohenhiem meeting with Trisha in the afterlife and telling her about their sons. It's a great moment where he says Ed got Al back doing something he never even thought of. It's ment as like a nice little bonus but honestly it's one of my favorite representations of what makes Ed so special compared to everyone else. Even Hohenheim, for all his sacrifices, love for his family, and the years he spent on the earth, it never even crosses his mind to give up his Alchemy, yet Ed is willing to do it in a heartbeat. It's not a slight on Hohenheim at all, it's just a great moment to show the amazing growth of Ed and the true bond and love he has for his brother.

I believe that the dwarf in the flask was returned to nothing. Between this and avatar The Last Airbender, they are both nearly perfect stories in my opinion. Both in my top five if not even top three. So glad you got your experiences this. It's an oldie but a goodie. Enjoy the last episode!!

Lachlan Smith

Would say lust more so dies satisfied, her exit quote is at least she's dying to a man like Mustang, and how she loves the look in his eyes. (Makes it all the better literally husband and wife VA's)

10:24 Damn you're good... but I should not be surprised anymore. That scene where he looks at both of his hands... excellent. I hope you do the english dub bloopers (it has some of my favorite voice actors too, check out Critical Role on yt, they play quite unfiltered DnD there).

Michal Kubán

I'd say he returned to everything (the universe / god etc.). Both options sound terrifying xD Just pure non-material energy. He became nothing.

You fucking nailed it!! I wish I could teleport myself back to the moment where I didn't know how this played out. I had the same feeling you did, and when you said it, I literally gasped! Seriously great intuition on Ed's sacrifice, also very Ed-like of you to say you came up with that ON THE SPOT. You said it never occurred to you before that very moment that maybe he can sacrifice his alchemy. Maybe you're a prodigy! Others may have mentioned this, but the dwarf in the flask's door was BLANK. He learned NOTHING from the Truth. Ed's door was plastered with so many different things, showing what the portal showed him. If you go back, you can see everyone's door had stuff on it. Also also a small but awesome detail, Alphonse and Hoenheim's hands touching, that was in one of the ending theme songs! Ending #4. I always find like it's such a great reveal to the end, without anyone knowing it until after they see it! Man...to see your reaction to this episode was wild. I'm sad the journey with you is coming to an end! I've watched so many reactions to this show, and yours has definitely be one of the best. I forever look forward to showing people this show and going along for the ride again and again. Now you can too! Can you imagine now, KNOWING it all, and showing it to someone for the first time?! OH, one last detail....Ed only cried twice in the show...when Alphonse was taken, and here, episode freaking 63. He only ever cried when it came to Al. Probably could have used letting his tears out a bit more lol, but I've always found their love for each other just inspiring.

So the scene where Ed stands up and calls Father a novice is actually a nearly direct mirror to his fight with Father Cornello in the beginning (which was the original first fight in the manga), both in Ed's dialogue and the framing of the shots. Just a fun little parallel.
