As I understood it, company A sold the armor at a hugely inflated price and the debt they got is worth way more than the value of the armor they sold. Company B got the debt and can collect it anytime Lawrence appears, perhaps he doesn’t even need to show – possibly they can demand that Rowen trade company pay the debt. Company A and B could split the profits from the debt. The guy that sold Lawrence the armor totally played both Holo and Lawrence, the debt is just the cream on top. He traded worthless armor for extremely valuable spices. Information is key.

You were pretty close on the nose with the Church interaction. I think there was a bit of a translation thing here though. I think even the OG anime explained it a bit better. If I remember correctly it's not that it makes Lawrence seem incompetent with money. Quite the opposite in fact. The Church's "charity" is typically reserved for the "lost lamb" types or people who are at the last possible option or have absolutely nothing. Think like a homeless person. Lawrence is still well-dressed and clean, hair and beard are maintained, AND he shows up with a beautiful woman who is also well-dressed and hasn't left him (when normally if someone was absolutely at the very last straw then the woman would leave). In the LN, I believe its actually Holo's CLOTHES that catches his attention. The fact that he can support a woman AND buy her nice clothes is telling. To the Church this looks really bad. From their perspective he's just looking for free money even though he clearly doesn't "need" it. Him showing up with a woman is the number one signifier of having money and they probably deal with people like this somewhat regularly.
