Hmmm… yes and no. One thing is, there’s not proof that Mariko’s father has that objective for her to live by marrying to Buntaro. Everything that Toranaga said really cannot be taken face-value as truth. In fact, Mariko’s third heart is Blackthorne all the way, a desire to live in freedom - don’t forget the setup in the first 4 epsiodes between her and Blackthrone. In fact, her confession to Father Avito is clearly on Blackthorne and her ‘adultery’ with him when her true heart is with him as well. Thus, as I said, don’t underestimate Blackthorne’s intelligence on him understanding Mariko. He sees her right away, just that he doesn’t want to admit that her death is the only way. If he really doesn’t understand, he won’t step up and second her by his own will. It’s not about understanding but more about acceptance. Really check on Blackthorne’s actions in the next episode, and see how he also hides his own intentions in an ambiguous way. Even right til the end, there’s no clear cut interpretation of Blackthorne, Mariko and Toranaga’s actions but beyond that, we see truthful emotions…
