This is a great anime! It does indeed have a lot to say about history, science, and humanity. But it should be remembered that it's also pretty ahistorical; heliocentrism was never really oppressed by the Church. Indeed it was initially seen by them as a really intriguing idea, and later became somewhat controversial before being accepted. Lots of people misremember that Galileo was burned at the stake for supporting it, when in fact he was just placed under house arrest, mostly for being an obstinate dick to the wrong people. This telling is kinda confusing the way that heliocentrism took some time to gain acceptance, and the way the Church did indeed at times go on inquisition sprees against heresy and witchcraft.
