I'm going to leave an explanation here because, once again, I'm pretty sure the English subs screwed up this bit. If the mods find it interesting enough, please pass it on, but I'm pretty sure many people are also unaware of this. The subtitles say, "It wasn't that he was the first friend I'd made. He was a partner", and that's kinda incorrect. What he's actually saying is this: "For the first time I felt like I could make a partner, not a friend." He emphasises the importance of partnership for him yet again, just like he did in 1x02 when he was talking with Suga and saying that even though he had (many) friends (in junior high), who were all nice people, they weren't teammates, they weren't partners — they didn't share his passion. Hinata most likely didn't have anyone like this by his side until coming to Karasuno and meeting Kageyama, whose passion could finally rival his own.

Hinata bumping into Asahi mid air shows Hinata is trying to become the ace of the team, even Asahi realised this and wanted to get stronger.

Aw man, this is one of my favorite episodes on season 2. I remember that it made me a bit uncomfortable to see Hinata and Kageyama fight like that and I felt so bad for Yachi being in that situation - almost broke my heart. I forgot there is a lot of emotional moments throughout this season, you guys are not ready!

Finally watched it. I’d like to thank you for an interesting discussion yet again, because it did manage to give me a slightly different perspective - even though I seemed to realize many things that you talked about, I didn’t think much about them, but now it almost feels like I learnt some new stuff about this episode, and it was really refreshing. It’s true that it’s different when you have the full context, but it’s also really interesting to see people’s thoughts on the conflict without it. Get ready, you’ve got some really interesting stuff ahead!

Everybody is wrong, fortunately, people are on hand to tell them that, and tell them how. Episode 6 will knock your socks off XD

Carly

you guys realize your new 'oh yeahhh' can be the SO WHAT parts

Lærke

dang it, now we have to wait another week

Hyperion

The "oh yeah" is a reference to a comedy sketch where you just blurt out the english parts and they used that opening specifically.

Hahaha I’m so far ahead in manga and no spoilers but Hinatas drive to improve is amazing. I can see why people feel like he’ll swallow them whole

I felt the same watching this episode - I love that Tanaka came in and stopped it lol. The whole scene was just so intense and awkward, I felt like I was watching two friends fight and not sure how to stop it. I was waiting for them to see this one because I knew it'd resonate with them.

Great discussion guys, this episode was so chilling and awkward, intense and left me somewhat speechless when I first saw it. I can understand Hinata's fears of relying too much on one thing, I think at this point he is greedy in the sense that he doesn't want to be a one trick pony - Kageyama who is the first friend of his to share a passion with, telling him (as he probably interpreted it) that he's only good at this one thing so don't muck it up most likely hurt him... Because if it couldn't beat Seijoh, it'll never hold up to others - (Lev's a new player and stopped it) Hinata will be replaced eventually. I understand Hinata, and believing that all of them should be striving to be better BUT being proud or impressed with Kageyama keeping a team-oriented perspective and insisting Hinata forget this selfish desire... Ugh it's just so easy to get into a long dissection because I can understand and agree with parts of both arguments and point out pros and cons. Coach Ukai looking to Nekoma's coach and asking himself if he's being weak - essentially running by removing a player that wants to mess with their formula and Nekoma's coach thinking a response to the young Ukai in regards to is there any improvement by not taking chances or trying to change things up/is staying the same the kind of improvement he wants?

I know this is like a few years too late, but I just wanna leave this here... I think you were missing some of the points being made here. Oikawa was enjoying every bit of Kageyama's pain, yes, but his advice was spot on. In fact, Ukai Sr. gave the same advice but from Hinata’s perspective. Also, Hinata's greed is totally reasonable considering the situation they were in. All the members needed to grow stronger individually, a big point of season 2 is that they all realized that and worked harder at polishing their individual strengths. Take in consideration that the boys will only play with this team and these exact members for no more than 1 year. Even at the pro level, contracts are usually for 1 to 2 seasons only. And with a deep bench, the coach can keep changing up the starting lineup depending on who you're playing. Simply put, a player giving up on their individual growth to avoid not synching up with his team just doesn't make sense. It should be the other way around; the players need to evolve individually to get to a level where they can be useful in any team. That's the whole point of Hinata’s "greed" here. He's aware of the fact that he needs to find his own strength instead of simply relying on Kageyama, because ultimately he's his own athlete and he needs to be good on his own if he wants to stay on the court with the other 5 members, regardless of who those 5 are.
