When Maria talked about Yang being strong I don't think physically. Rather, I think she was referring to how Yang, unlike her, actually returned to being a huntress after being crippled.

The timer I'm 100% sure was super boost defences for her. If you rewatch you see Maria SOLIDLY hit the faunus several times in the fight but it has zero impact.

Talking about the potential grimm forces i think most people forget about the subterranian grimm we were warned about and shown in volume 2. What kind of protection could the kingdoms have for something like that?
