You have it right that it's sort of a lineage thing but i think there is also an affinity aspect. Benimaru is using black flame coz he was already a fire mage for instance. Souei is another example because his steel thread comes from way back in episode 1 when Rimuru absorbed that spider

Some of the things in this anime are not explained very clearly. Rimaru got black lightning because it was a tempest wolf ability. Which he got because he is "part" direwolf after eating the wolf leader way back when. When the wolves evolved into tempest wolves, rimaru changed too but because he was such a higher level was automatically made a tempest star wolf (you see this when he scares the theives outside the dwarf city). He then shows Ranga later that he's a tempest star wolf and that's the first time he uses black lightning. He then gains the ability to breakdown and reforge abilities from Shizu and the combines black lightning with Ifrit's flames to make black flames. Naming gives your magicules to the named creature, boosting their level, stats and evolving them, as well as allowing them to use your abilities if they have an affinity for it (Benimaru used orge flames in his fight against rimaru, showing he can use fire magic able to be upgraded to black flames). My understanding is that naming is usually more of a top down process, but because of rimaru's predator skill and the fact that he has absorbed family members of monsters now in his party, it has become more of a give and take process for him. Sorry for the long post, but took me a while to wrap my head around things when I first saw it and I hope this helps.
