While you could train people fairly quickly to just hit the other side of the bridge with bow and arrow, they knew it was going to be stormy during the fight. Which would make it impossible to reliably use them.

also people like magma kinro and ginro already had experience with spears and other such weapons so giving them a blade would probably work out far better than a bow with such short time
