Takamura wasn't on the Rugby team his older brother was on the rugby team and the star player, Takamura beat up the hecklers making fun of his older brother, when he was in the stands. Which is what got him kicked out of the family.

R_K41

The one who played Rugby was Suguru Takamura (The older brother), not Mamuro Takamura (Our Takamura). Takamura sent 20 guys to the hospital because they were talking shit about Suguru after he lost in a match. Edit: They go back and correct themselves later in the discussion.

Takamura’s character arc is so GOOD and it only gets better.

Easily your best Ippo discussion, and overall your best discussion in a while actually.

At this point of the story, Takamura Mamoru is 25 years old and fought "only" 16 fights. Fun note : his sister is voiced by Kikuko Inoue, one of my all time favorite voice actress. She's known to be the "Onee san" ultimate voice in Japan, having voiced pure, angelic and mature beauties like Belldandy in Ah my Goddess , Kasumi Tendo in Ranma or Nurse Joy in Pokemon. Also Rugby is more violent than American Football, but they both pale in comparison to Australian Football, which is the closest thing to a public battle royal XD Suguru is not that bad of a man, he just have to BE the older son. He probably receives the most pressure of all the kids and since he was a sportsman, he probably had been forced to stop to be the "mature" heir the father wanted. Suguru sees what he wanted to be in his brother Mamoru, but he cant tell him. He dedicated his life to be the heir, he's like a bird in a cage. Once the fight with Hawk is over, I suggest you to watch some videos of Prince Naseem Hamed, the man his boxing style and attitude was based on. Also, I've seen some people talking about how hawk was insulting for them as american, and I must say they're wrong . Hawk is garbage, true, but he is one of two american characters that are pos in HNI while all the others are awesome. And if you think he is cliché, remember that french players in Captain Tsubasa are called NAPOLEON and uses EIFFEL TOWER techniques, if that is not cliché XD

Great discussion. As I often say, HnI is not about boxing, it's about life. Hawk is a world champion, but suddenly he becomes much less relevant compared to what we saw in this episode. The boxing fights are amazing, but this is when HnI really sets itself apart, the life struggles. I'm the older brother, and I know that something my brother struggled with was being compared to me so many times. Living in a small city, everybody knows everybody. And then someone's identity becomes "someone else's brother" instead of themselves. You don't have your own identity, your identity is attached to someone else's identity. So, I also wonder how much pressure Takamura felt about that, being compared to his older "perfect" brother of a "perfect" Takamura family, while being so "imperfect" himself. It's easy to feel like you don't belong to the family, or anywhere in the world. This really changed my perspective about a lot of things we have seen about Takamura, good and bad ones. Of course winning feels good. But I think after this episode I was able to better understand what's that good feeling for Takamura, and that's something that no other character can copy. I think it also helps us to understand Takamura's role as the "older brother" for Aoki, Kimura, and Ippo.

I've said it once and i'll said it again, Naseem Hamed's attitude is nothing like Hawk, Naseem was cocky but never disrespectful or racist towards his opponents, so Hawk is definitely not modeled or based on him, only his fighting style is. Personally Hawk's attitude reminds me of Floyd Mayweather the most, who's also an american.

2021-07-08 05:24:57 Was really excited for this discussion! As someone who is significantly less accomplished than his prestigious academic family and was in many ways a delinquent growing up, living in a completely different world from them and their expectations, I very much relate to this story! 28 year old brother is finishing his PhD and has recently hosted a conference honoring Steven Pinker an incredibly world renowned linguist frequently cited in magazines as one of the most influential minds of the past century. Father was in top 1% on the bar and had a Kennedy for an advisor in law school and I have multiple cousins and and uncle who are extremely wealthy. I was in a sort of but not really in a Takamura role spending most of Highschool house hopping without a home due to struggles with family among others personal things, just barely graduating after my third school. Doing all of this mostly on my own and with the help of people I’d found was such a huge accomplishment for me. The found family trope you guys often discuss is definitely one of my favorites. Seeing Takamura (as reprehensible as he can be) find happiness and acceptance from others is really wonderful. I find him a really interesting pseudo mentor figure, being in many ways way more flawed than all of the characters who look up to him as you guys have touched on. We’ve seen characters like him before but his atypical background and the way others treat him really make me root for him even more.

His attitude IN the ring is 120% Naseem Hamed. If you do not agree, you never saw Naseem in a ring.

R_K41

If by "attitude" you mean style and showmanship in the ring, sure. But if by attitude you mean his personality, then you're dead wrong.
