I believe the quote was by C.S. Lewis, "Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience. They may be more likely to go to Heaven yet at the same time likelier to make a Hell of earth. This very kindness stings with intolerable insult. To be "cured" against one's will and cured of states which we may not regard as disease is to be put on a level of those who have not yet reached the age of reason or those who never will; to be classed with infants, imbeciles, and domestic animals.”

What I've found after reading numerous histories of different Kingdoms, Countries, and Peoples is that humanity is in a constant state of swinging between extremes. It starts pretty normal with tons of success stories which leads to gradual decadence which results in chaos. Said chaos brings about people who establish order, and normalize society until they gradually include more and more rules to the point they become repressive. Then people decide that the new order is bad and decide to liberate people until society is normalized again. And the cycle continues forever.

Sorry if I get a little political here, but these "moral busybodies" can be found in all spectrums of political alignments.

One potential subject of discussion that the brothers left out is the mass migration from the Empire to the Alliance. There were nobles and once-powerful royalists among those groups. they had to flee the motherland because they either rejected the regime or fallen out of favor. These people come to a new land and hope to rebuild their haven or base of power there. These people are still imperialists at heart. They and their descendant's actions could have slowly changed the sentiments and demographics of the Alliance to shift away from its original principles of freedom and democracy to militarization and quasi-dictatorship rule. Many generations of buildup leads to the present defunct Alliance. Now, could the original settlers gradually shift perspectives on their own? Would the Alliance be where it is today without the influences of empire exiles? Hard to say. Anything is possible.
