Totally agree that the backstory wasn’t really necessary. I think the manga handled it slightly better with Ippo’s mother explaining the backstory to Kumi, adding some characterization to Kumi allowing her to understand his motivations better

Why did they just talk over the entire ED? And ignore like 80% of the OP??? Jesus man

The Shimabukuro fight is the only "sacrifice" made by the anime. Nearly 60% of its content is missing. Ippo met Shimabukuro before the fight and they have a very funny moment where Ippo accidentaly shows his dick to the journalist during the weighting (Shimabukuro noticed it was "like a Boa"). What happened here is that they had to cut most of this fight content because it's no the "main event" of the season and they probably couldnt make it fit in the season as it was planned. The problem is that it makes this fight feel very fillerish in the show, while it's just as detailed, thrilling and incredible in the manga. You saw in this episode that Ippo and Shimabukuro crossed punch : in the manga, Shimabukuro punch LIFTED Ippo from the ground during that exchange, because he is shorter and incredibly powerfull. I always hated they shortened this fight like this, it's probably the only case where the anime clearly failed and sucked. Fortunately, the rest of the season is top notch. The sacrifice had to be made for economical reason.

We were first introduced to cyanosis in the Ippo vs Sanada fight.

What's annoying me isn't that they talked over the op and ed, it's that they talked over the op and ed and said absolutely nothing of substance.

Yeah, I was surprised when I got to this part in the manga. They really did Shimabukuro dirty. It was such an incredible fight with a lot of build up to it. I hope they eventually read this party in the manga.

I really don't mean to drag down the hype for this season, but it's a seriously weak adaption of the manga. The production value really took a hit for this one too, the colors and linework look good but the animation is pretty weak during exchanges. I just wish they didn't cut my man Shimabukuro's character intro to basically nothing, and his fight's progression so short. Really loses a lot of impact and just makes him look like another mook to build up Ippo.
