They latched on to the haircut, which IS the same as Haruhi's middle school look. Which is intentional and could be used also to contrast between that girl and Haruhi.

I don’t think the girl in the beginning is supposed to be Haruhi, but giving her the same hairstyle sets up for the parallel scene at the end. I highly doubt Haruhi and the twins would have crossed paths in their youth given their vastly different social standings. As for your reference in episode one, when the two took off her glasses they saw someone who was cute and had the potential to be a host. Before that, they had only intended on using her as an assistant to the club. They didn’t figure out she was a girl until she kicked them out of the dressing room.

I would like to remind you guys that the twins realize the gender thing after Haruhi kicks them out of the change room because they notice another guy probably wouldn’t get that embarrassed changing around them. I would recommend maybe reading the manga after finishing the show if you’re interested in the development of the other characters.

Glasses thing is typical Japanese Manga cliche. When you wear glasses can't see your eyes and looks lame face, but you take off glasses, can see your eyes and looks cute/beautiful/cool/handsome face. They don't necessarily recognize Haruhi.

Yup, the first girl basically represented the people who failed to "gatecrash", while Haruhi is supposedly the first person who did it.

The girl in the flashback was not Haruhi, she was just a random child, represting the people who could not tell them apart.
