Jacob was closest to what happened with the name thing. Hiyori realized that the ト in Yato’s name could be read like ‘to’ or ‘boku’ so she decided to try the alternate pronunciation.

It's not alternate pronunciation. Yato's name is written "夜ト" in Japanese. "夜" is Kanji Character and Read "Ya". "ト" is Katakana Character and Read "To". but "ト" is similar to Kanji's "卜". It looks the same but not. These are a different characters. And Kanji's "卜" Read "Boku". That's why Read "Ya-boku". BTW, the Japanese name usually hasn't the combination of Kanji and Katakana or Hiragana. So Yato's name was weird from the first of all show, for Japanese. And finally solved Yato's name problem. yay.

About Yato's name, 夜卜: Name is written with two characters: 夜(ya)ト(to). Hiyori engraved his name on that cute mini shrine, being sure, that she had it right. Yato wouldn't really be moved to tears unless he really had his very own name written on his precious very own shrine. And Hiyori figured out that his real name isn't Yato but Yaboku. The second character in Yato's name (夜ト) isn't actually katakana characterト"to" like we have though so far. It's kanji that looks almost identical:卜 = "boku" and sometimes it's almost impossible to tell the difference between them (ト or 卜 ??), but Hiyori being quick witted she figured it out. The pronunciation and the meaning behind the characters "to" and "boku" are different. And the name Yaboku: 夜 "ya" is night and卜 "boku" is divination. Together it's 夜卜 and means something like "night diviner" but it can have something more sinister meaning on it. Given Yato's reputation as the God of Calamity "Yaboku no Kami" might be something like "God (deity/spirit??) who grant's dark wishes" (found that translations and I believe it's quite accurate) so no wonder Yato doesn't want his true name to be known. ...and please someone correct me if I missed something 🙏 Trying to explain Japanese stuff in English is a bit challenging since neither is my native language 😅
