Don/t you think that Yukino's solution was what Shiromeguri said in the end?

Michael Kerr

Expanding a little on what Nail of Alex said above me, I feel like we're kinda missing the forest for the trees a little on where Hachiman messed up here: his methods weren't really the issue this time, they were a little underhanded but not as bad as usual. It was, in my opinion, the result that made Yukino realise he didn't understand. Both Hachiman and Yui were under the impression that if Yukino won the election, and became SCP, she would leave the club and their friendship would disintegrate, they saw the 3 of them being in that specific room, as part of that specific club, as necessary for their relationship. But what if that wasn't the case? What if the solution Yukino saw, was the same future that Shiromeguri thought of? Where the 3 of them join the Student Council together. They would still be together, just in a different room, doing different activities. In fact they'd have more to do together, which Yukino implies when she says that the Service Club doesn't really have much to do. Yukino actually said a few things, which Hachiman remembers after she left, that imply that she actually really did want to become the SCP. In the end, it feels like what Hachiman protected, and what Yui thought they needed, was the superficial relationship that being in that club facilitated, and not the genuine friendship that surely could survive a change of location.

This is straight from the light novel, volume 8. There was another stirring of unease in my heart. Yukinoshita's remark wouldn't leave my ears. Then, for the first time, I figured it out. What if, for argument's sake... her real motive in running was something else? I remembered too late. Yukinoshita had said she didnt mind doing it. I'd assumed that, like with the cultural festival, this was a manifestation of her antagonism with her sister, and her tendency to focus on one thing. But what if... What if that had been what she really wanted? What if I 'd been averting my eyes from her true intentions, hiding there among all the things I said? What if I'd interpreted the principles governing her conduct to my personal convenience and acted based on hopeful speculation? Some people cant do anything unless they're given a problem, unless they find some motivation to act. Some people will still feel conflicted, certain yet uncertain, and the uncertainty will prevent them from action. I understood that well. So then it wouldn't be surprising for other people to be like that, too. But in my mind, I had excluded Yukinoshita from that possibility. I didn't know what it was, actually. it's not as if we talked about. Even if we had, I wouldn't get it. Just... All that remained was doubt, wondering If had made some mistake.
