wow I didn't even notice that the azure king and kunikida looked visually similar so I completely get your confusion especially since they are both idealist as well, but you are looking too much into it or rather looking at it from the wrong angle... when you said "what would be the point of the parallels" it's more to set up potential future for kunikida rather than have this be his backstory... that is also implied in dazai's last line which itself contradicts the theory of kunikida being the azure king himself. but you guessed the part about ada giving people who had done bad things second chance, which you will see later on... anyways, we are finally getting to my fav episodes of the season starting next week, can't wait!!

I don't think Kunikida is the Azure King, but I DO enjoy all the theories XD

Wait, wait, wait! I don't think that he is the Azure king! They just said that he was very simular to the Azure king. And that if he isn't careful with his ideals he could turn into someone 'like' the azure king. Him being the azure king just wouldn't add up. 1. Azure kings girlfriend (Sasaki) told Kunikida at the grave that she had been lying and that her lover had died. She even got emotional. Why would she need to say that if they were alone at the time? 2. The hacker rakuzo ended up killing Sasaki out of revenge for his father. Do you really think he would have accepted Kunikida if he knew about him being the azure king? 3. I think something was mentioned last episode that Kunikida worked on the case of the azure king all those years ago. He felt guilty about not being able to save all those people. He didn't like the injustice of it all. 4. Why would he ever be motivated to set up bombs all those years ago when one of his ideals is to never let anyone get killed in front of him? I think that the reason why they look so alike was more of an added touch of the writer. See this comment from the user "DogzOnFire" on reddit: "That's because he's meant to represent what Kunikida's ideal justice could morph into if he went too far, as Dazai said at the end. The Azure King's girlfriend even told Kunikida that he reminded her of the Azure King. They were alike in terms of their looks and their ideals. A doppelganger relationship, it's used a lot in film and television to symbolise what a character would be like if they were twisted by their ideals." I do get the confusion though! This is just what I always thought. He just never seemed like the type of person to do things like that. Mostly because of his ideals and sense of justice.

Well, I agree with previous comments but I must say I really love your theory and listened to it like to a cool AU. Btw, interesting fact is that in real life Nobuko Sasaki was Doppo Kunikida's first wife who married him despite her parents' rejection, but divorced with him 5 months later. So this somehow fits into your theory xD

No, Donpo isn't the Azure King... he was part of the infultration. He was part of the intellegence team. The Azure King was in the building. Donpo was outside the building. They can't be the same person. The reason the Azure King is depicted to look like Donpo is because they were similar type of people who were very similar but the one thing that drived them. Their ideals. Are different. But even if they are different. If Donpo tries to commit himself to his ideals too much he can become like the Azure King. Willing to do anything for his ideals to come true.

I won't repeat what everyone else has said in regards to Kunikida (though I do hope a mod will correct them), but this reaction was really great! I can't wait for next week! Akiko and Kyouka!!! I really hope they appreciate Akiko more and think of her as more than a "kinky doctor." And right after we get Chuuya and THE GUILD! I'm so excited for the Guild!
