I believe that Fushi/Gugu superheating the stone caused it to explode after the nokker jumped into the ocean because of the sudden temperature change.

Never thought I'd sob so hard for something fictional but this episode proved me wrong the first time I watched it. Ōima really woke up and chose violence huh. It hurts despite expecting the death to happen I also like the way Gugu reacted when 'March' got killed. It was as if his brother Fushi actually died even though he knows he's immortal :(. And the music during Gugu's confession is so beautiful. This was the scene that made me remember this soundtrack. RIP best boy and brother Gugu.

Real curious. Rean didn't see Fushi, did she? How was it a give away? Did I miss something?

It is extremely poorly demonstrated visually but apparently the reason the Nokker explodes is because the stone is so super heated from the fire that the sudden change in temperature caused the reaction. Fushi transformed into Gugu in front of Rean because 1) Fushi is now younger because he transformed and Rean doesn't know about his powers 2) Fushi has no other human form left besides Gugu that he can appear before Rean as.

The Nokker exploded the same way the arena exploded at the end of the Midoriya vs Todoroki fight in season 2 of MHA, basically.

Superheated stone quickly put into cold water can make the stone explode into shrapnel. Ancient humans didn't 'mine' metal like we did, they collected stones, heated them up and put them into a river. The stone qould fall apart, revealing the metal inside.
