In 1930 it was decided to create a new layout at Monza, this was to become known as the Florio circuit. The Florio circuit was a 7km layout that was shorter then the more commonly used 10km full layout. A short concrete straight called the Link was paved connecting the central straight to the oval's back straight. The two new 90 degree corners drastically reduced the speeds around the circuit, and the Florio circuit was generally a more technical circuit overall.
The 1930 Monza Grand Prix was a formula libre event with no restrictions on engine capacity or overall weight. Ultimately, the Maserati team would dominate the event in their 26M and V4, taking 1st, 2nd, 3rd, & 5th. Giovanni Minozzi kept the Maserati team honest with his Bugatti T35C, but finished just over 3.5 minutes behind the victor. Although the Maserati team were dominant, the race would see one of the closest finishes in racing history to that point. Luigi Arcangeli led much of the event, while Achille Varzi, one of the home favorites, found himself having to charge through the field due to a failed spark plug and a necessary stop to change it. With 5 laps to go, Achille Varzi had moved into third position... on the third to final lap, Archille moved into second. Luigi Archangeli who had dominated the event drove frantically, the Tefosi are described as "raving mad" at this point, and yet Archille gained... Motorsport Magazine reported after the race that Archille Varzi was "driving like a demon." On the final lap, Archille Varzi had caught Luigi Arcangeli as they roared out of the second new Florio Link corner... they flew onto the banking and Achille Varzi dove to the inside, flashing past Luigi Archangeli... the finish was one of closest in racing history to that point. The Tifosi swarmed Archille Varzi, picking him out of his car... carrying him on their shoulders... it was utter pandemonium. The officials had to flag down the other cars to slow them before they reached the front stretch, such was the celebration at the starting line. It is reported that Luigi Arcangeli wept bitterly, utterly exhausted and mentally broken after such a bitter defeat. One of the greatest finishes in history had just been witnessed, and the legend of the Monza circuit only continued to grow!
You can enjoy our version of the unique and quite awesome Monza Florio layout. I think you guys are really going to get a kick out of racing it in league settings as its so different from the Monza you've been accustomed to. Enjoy!
