1930s Monza v0.7 - 1935 Layout! - Assetto Corsa (Patreon)

The 1935 Italian Grand Prix featured a heavy hitting 16 car lineup that exclusively featured the works teams of Mercedes, Auto Union, Alfa Romeo, Maserati, and Bugatti.. privateers were not invited/needed to fill out the field this year. In order to lessen the advantage the powerful silver arrows would have had at the circuit, the Florio layout was chosen at Monza... with further speed reductions by adding a total of four additional temporary chicanes for the Grand Prix event, FIVE chicanes in total (I'd say today's F1 racing is quite a bit better than that at least). This placed much emphasis and strain on the braking systems of the 1935 GP cars during the Grand Prix event.

Despite the best efforts to create a technical circuit, the Auto Union and Mercedes cars were significantly faster in the days of practice leading up to the race. Only Nuvolari who thrashed his Alfa Romeo around the circuit found himself within a few seconds of the fastest lap times. Thus leading into the race, the entire Italian nation's hopes rested on one legend. Two Auto Unions driven by Stuck & Varzi and two Mercedes driven by Caracciola & Fagioli flew into the lead, and the four drivers continued to swap positions over the opening 6 laps, until Nuvolari finally caught the Fagioli and moved up into fourth. Nuvolari was further aided when Varzi, who was leading at that moment, blew a piston and caught fire on the side of the track. Meanwhile, one Maserati driver flew off the track when his throttle stuck... and another retired when their brakes were worn to nothing. The attrition throughout the field was high, with 11 of the 16 cars retiring over the course of the race, with brake wear and failure being a major contributor to the number of retirements during the race. As the race progressed, it was clear a three way battle for victory was emerging. Stuck led in his Auto Union, Caracciola second in his Mercedes, and finally Nuvolari roughly half a minute behind those two in third... hoping for things to turn his way.
