Hi everyone, Rich here, posting direct from a very loud and bewildering Gamescom showfloor! I've just got a little spare time here to say that - yes! - we will be filming DF Direct Weekly as per normal tomorrow. It's likely to be myself, Alex and Oliver on the panel. Do bear in mind that it's been an astonishingly busy week, so we may be a little late with the new show!

We'll be talking about Gamescom, Opening Night Live, Indiana Jones coming to Xbox (oh and PS5), thoughts from the show floor along with much, much more!

But now's the time for you to suggest additional talking points and - of course - to pose your questions for the Supporter Q+A section! There's an invitingly empty white space below (unless you're in dark mode) so please feel free to fill it forthwith!

With its rumored extended ray-tracing capabilities, its frame generation, and the optimizations a console can offer, could the PS5 Pro bring Black Myth Wu-Kong to another level, making a true difference with the PS5 version? Enough so the PS5 Pro could have at least one flagship title?...

Vasyl Baran

Have you had the chance to experience Bloodborne on PC with shadPS4 emulator? I can't believe it's finally happening...

Nick Tasker

I guess I'll ask the obvious question: with a tentpole release like Indiana Jomes confirmed for an only-slightly delayed release on PS5, is there any reason why someone would buy an XBox, today or in the future? Phil Spencer has made it clear that 'Microsoft is a business', and Microsoft seems to have decided to focus on being a publisher. Is the next XBox going to be relegated to some sort of mobile-phone or Spotify-style rental platform where you pay a monthly subscription fee to access ALL xbox games via Gamepass on a box that doesn't do anything if you let the subscription lapse? For the record, I'm not mad, I'm just disappointed that we're likely to lose another storied console manufacturer a la Sega.

What are your thoughts on the Gamescom Opening Night Live? On my side, it felt like torture. I was bored to death in front of what looked like a never ending two hours advertisement for random basic games. There were 2-3 interesting trailers: Reanimal, Dune, Civilization VII, ... But all of those could have just been trailers casually dropped on Youtube, I don't see the point of them showing in here. One good thing for me though: I didn't had to suffer the idiocy of randoms "Most Playstation/Xbox/PC games expected" this year. "Yipiii".. I guess..

Saraaahhhh

"Indiana Jones coming to Xbox" I think that should say ps5 instead of xbox, right?

Wez OOSH! (WOOSH)

Hi DF team! Just wanted to know your opinion on the fact that Indiana Jones is going to PS5 6 months after release? Personally, eventhough I am happy that more people get to experience the game, it does leave the question on the actual selling point to Microsofts console, the upcoming MARVEL Blade game being developed as an Xbox exclusive would've been a good counter to Sony's Spider-Man games by having their own flagship superhero title on the platform, however if Blade walks the same path as Indiana Jones, I could see Xbox users either switching to the PlayStation ecosystem or going full PC, game preservation/backwards compatibility and gamepass can not be the main selling points of the system, as PC gets Xbox & PlayStations exclusive library eventually anyway, as well as being the leading class in game preservation. Sorry for the long question, I hope you all have a good weekend

Hi DF crew, Watching the bizarre 'balanced mode' performance metrics for Wu Kong on PS5, it got me wondering why so few developers have implemented proper 40 FPS modes? While 60+ remains ideal, 40 genuinely is a marked, game-changing improvement over 30 when the performance leeway is there, but in big AAA games it still seems frustratingly elusive outside a few developers' admirable efforts. Is it simply a matter of time, resources and experience, or is it more complex than that? Seems very strange that any developer would aim for something like a 45 FPS target when 40 is, well, right there - while it wouldn't solve the 60hz problems, for 120hz it would still be much preferred over even a laggy, frame-genned 60.

Hi DF Gang! What are your thoughts on the announcement of and becoming a software company? https://www.techpowerup.com/324171/amd-is-becoming-a-software-company-heres-the-plan I didn’t see you talking about it. Also could the relative lack in software investment compared to NVIDIA be a byproduct of past software endeavors(TressFX, AMD TrueAudio, Mantle) which didn’t pay off?

First of all let me thank you for providing many hours of well informed content to fill whatever trivial amounts of downtime I am left with at the end of the day. With the AI “revolution” now taking the world by apparent storm, what do you think the prospects are for this changing AI present within games outside the scope of merely improving image quality / boosting performance. Will we be seeing ML being used in a broader context eg in the form of more skilled enemies / combatants / NPC’s ? I am curious to your thoughts as to how AI is going to be used outside of just image / performance constricts. Peace and love to all. TheOG

Hey DF crew! While we hear a lot of criticism about developers using DLSS and FG as a crutch to cover bad optimisation,I think it’s definitely got more good sides. Back in the day other than Crisis we didn’t have too many games that were future proof in terms of the graphics. Now we have a lot of such titles: Cyberpunk, Alan Wake II, Avatar and Black Myth: Wukong, to name a few. And thanks to DLSS and Framegen not only we know they will still look and run awesome on future generations of hardware but we can play them ok on the current hardware! The alternative to that would be games scaling to the hardware so we would not see path-traced titles in next five years or so. Of course, there are still optimisation issues that some developers could approach better. But overall it’s a great technology. Let me know what you think about it, please! Cheers

Johan

Hey, did any of you get the chance to play the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 demo on the show floor? Really looking forward to it and would love to hear your take (I believe Alex is also a fan?) on it. All the best and hope you guys enjoy the Gamescom madness :)

Wicca

Hi DF ppl, have you considered adding a quantiitative rating system for your tech reviews? It could give the audience a frame of reference to compare different titles in terms of perf and tech quality. Thanks for the great work as always! Cheers.

HelenX

Hello there. So I've realised that I notice shader compilation stutter only when it is extreme and traversal stutter hardly at all. I also don't seem to notice input latency but I'm half-convined that neither do most people (i do use controllers though) . If I could just persuade myself to think that 30fps was totally smooth then i'd have the full set of gaming-enjoyment superpowers. It really does feel that my own lack of perception of stutter *is* giving me a great advantage over others in being able to enjoy games. Do you any of you consider yourself to have similar 'special' abilities and what ones woud you cultivate if it were possible to do so.

Greetings, DF Gents! EA recently revealed the PC features for Dragon Age: The Veilguard, and the feature-set they tout looks mighty impressive: Steam Deck Verified and native Steam app (no EA launcher), fractional Vsync, support for all upscalers (notably, a "heavily customized" FSR 2.2 implementation), dynamic resolution scaling, full ultrawide including cutscenes, and a dearth of graphics options. Most notably to me was the mention of a "suite of ray tracing features" that includes an optional "selective" mode that only turns on ray tracing in scenes with the most visual impact. What are your thoughts on this feature? Could this be a no-nonsense way to improve performance in most areas, but visuals where ray tracing does make a notable improvement?

Rip Van Winkle

Square Enix released the Final Fantasy XVI demo alongside the PC announcement this week, and they've already released a patch that improves the image quality of all upscalers, fixes UI and gameplay bugs, crash fixes, and promises to improve stuttering and performance in the future. This seems like a great way to have a massive audience, with a variety of hardware configurations, help unofficially perform QA on their upcoming PC release. Should more companies do this?

alexrdavies

The latest game engines help ever-smaller teams produce technically amazing games. What are the smallest teams you have seen doing something great at the show? Are there any small teams who've been really welcoming and willing to talk about their tech stacks who you would like to shout out?

alexrdavies

When Unity changed their pricing structure, a lot of small developers declared an interest in exploring alternative game engines. Are you seeing much sign of that on the show floor? What engines are you seeing outside Unity and Unreal? How often do you see small teams roll their own?

Dubuc Nathan

Hey Everyone! Is it just me or are developers forgetting about baked lighting ? Don't get me wrong I'm always amazed by good real-time lighting and GI systems, but I often feel as if it's become the standard way to make games, even though a lot of them wouldn't need such expensive techniques to look good ! Seeing Black Myth Wukong, Jedi Survivor, and even FIFA games in the future making use of ray-traced solutions for GI when they are set at fixed times of day makes me wonder why devs are making that choice. Are these real-time solutions getting that much better at doing it than baked lighting ? What am I missing here ?

VeryProfessionalDodo

Hey there folks! Been thinking about the Black Myth Wukong PS5 exclusivity, and after seeing the performance review you made, I’m now fairly confident we have a Baldur’s Gate 3 situation on our hands all over again. If it runs this poorly on a PS5 to the point we’re seeing frame gen from 30 to 60 (and still struggling occasionally), how on Earth could an Xbox Series S run this game?

Xilon Xiao

Hello DF'ers, how are you doing? With MS keeping the discourse of the "most powerful machine" for next gen, will they learn their lesson and actually adopt an easier architecture/design for game development (like less gpu cores but higher clocks, easier "quick wins" like raw ssd speed and dedicated compression block) instead of the super ultra cool features that would require an enormous effort of the devs and (almost) no one actually implements (direct storage, ML block, mesh shaders)?

Xilon Xiao

Jhon mentioned on his twitter that he had a chance to play (or just watch?) the series x version (running on a dev kit) and he said the game looked beautiful and that was running on the only mode available, performance 60 fps. I'm very interested on it

FullyTorqued

What are the chances we’ll see an Intel GPU in the next gen consoles? There seems to be an assumption Microsoft and Sony will use AMD hardware in the next gen consoles (potentially/unlikely NVIDIA) but why not Intel? I feel that Intel is making a strong play in the hardware GPU space and the company is struggling financially which may create a perfect opportunity for console manufacturers to bundle Intel hardware at a competitive price point. What are the realities to this prospect? Any reason it would not be plausible?

1040STF

In your opinion, could the recent release of Doom 1+2 handle GZDoom support on consoles if Nightdive tried to? I know nothing about how it works, and I guess that even if it would, the Doom RT and Doom II RT mods are off the table on Playstation 5 and Xbox Series. But it would have been be great to experience some mods like Myhouse.wad, which do require GZDoom.

Richard

Interested in your thoughts on the new GamePass Standard tier. We knew it was coming, but new reporting indicates there could be an up to twelve month delay for new release games to hit that plan. That feels like a long time to make people wait, and puts major releases on a similar, if not longer, schedule to what we might be expecting for PS5 ports if the Indiana release windows anything to go by. Would two or three months have been sufficient to keep Ultimate enticing while getting games into players hands? Long waits could be especially problematic for titles with online components where you want high uptake day one.

Black Myth Wukong on PS5: yes, they used FSR and not TSR... why?!

Dubuc Nathan

With the newest Ryzen CPUs seemingly having many problems with Windows and results varying so much between Admin and non-admin accounts, would it be interesting to benchmark them on Linux to see how they could be performing free of these constraints ?

Xilon Xiao

Hello DF'ers, how are you doing? After watching the Black Myth Wukong videos, I got the impression that Game Science is a very talented team, but still makes "beginner" mistakes due to inexperience with traditional AAA games. What do you guys think?

Thomas Trala

Hey DF team! What are you most excited for that has been shown at Gamescom? Are you surprised with anything missing that you were expecting to be shown?

StefanSt

Which effect will the new Xbox "exclusives" strategy have on the next Xbox hardware? Do you think Microsoft is trying to make it as similar as possible to the next Playstation, or are they trying to differentiate from Sony? What could be a differentiator?

DaJaCo

I'm hoping similar.. there'll be a few games that fall into this category as more and more UE5 titles release. I think it'll be the UE5 console. Maybe it'll even get hellblade 2 and they can remove the black bars with the extra flops!

Nusco

As Xbox's policies swing wildly from side to side, analyzing their strategy feels increasingly futile. It's likely that they don't have a cohesive strategy at all. Microsoft, being a stock-driven company, flourishes during booms and goes into survival mode during busts. Now we're in a bust, so Xbox seems focused on their internal conflicts and on throwing ideas at the wall while staring at the bottom line. But this bust won't last forever. When it ends, what do you think will happen? Will Xbox emerge stronger, thanks to their robust portfolio? Or will they overmilk their franchises into irrelevance, like Disney is doing with Marvel and Star Wars? When the next videogaming boom arrives, will CoD and Halo still be iconic names?

Niels

Hi DF! Question regarding Black Myth: Wukong settings on a 5600X/3070 combo connected to a LG C1: Would you prefer higher resolution with lower graphical settings or the other way around (to get 60fps)?

RAVE_DAM0S

Hola DF Dudes! Of the Halo Strix APU's which of the APU will first appear in a handheld and will said handheld have considerably more oomf and better battery than the Asus ROG Ally Z1 Extreme? Marvelous day to you!

DaJaCo

Go on lads - Did Nintendo secretly demo the switch 2 at Gamescom - AGAIN!? Obviously it was super top secret this time, because they weren't even there! Officially... .. ... ..

TheMagicStick

I was looking at the new Series X consoles slated to come out this October. The release of those consoles seems pretty early for Santa Claus. Do you think Microsoft is getting ready to release a new Hybrid console next Spring? Also, are there any features/Magical Powers that the Series X silicon has left up its sleeve?

Simplex

Any thoughts on PSVR2 on PC? I had to te-enable iGPU on my 7800X3D to prevent the PSVR2 app from crashing immediately on launch. Insanity.

HimmelFlugzeug

Hello! Any unexpected happenings at Gamescom so far? If so, which one's been your favorite? Cheers from Cologne!

DukeBlueBalls

Greetings. Series S needs more RAM. Is it possible to free up more of the 2GB OS partition to use? I.e removing quick resume, background apps, and abusing virtual memory.

Snorlax jobless

when will gaming be great again?

Snorlax jobless

what would be the modern day equivalent of the master system?

Leftisthominid

It is rare for multiple DF'ers to be in physical proximity of each other (outside of Tom and Richard who are both based in Greater London). Since you are together for Gamescom, in the here and now, what are you going to do together for fun? Perhaps you can go to a retro gaming bar and play some Master System?

Leftisthominid

If the new Indiana Jones game is coming to PS5 and the PS5 Pro is still being released this year, wouldn't that mean that the best non-PC place to play the game would be the PS5 Pro? Doesn't this put Microsoft in a tricky situation if their own console games play better on the rival console?

DaJaCo

When sony released the PS5, they created a price delta between the digital and disk versions of the console of around £100. This incentivised sales of the digital model while maintaining a single performance target, reducing the burden on developers. Microsoft now releases the Series X All-digital with a price tag of £429.99, a mere £50 less than the Series X (Disk). Surely Microsoft stands to gain more than sony from selling Digital-Only consoles, as they are pushing the Game Pass sales model. This being the case, shouldn't the Series X All-Digital be £379.99 rather than £429.99 ? Microsoft is asking people to permanently sacrifice their disk drive - (with no option of adding one in future) and pay significantly more than for the PS5 Digital for that privilege? For a console with fewer exclusives, while releasing most of theirs on PS5? Have they lost their minds?

Kellan Sandifer

Does console optimization largely depend on time to get a game running acceptably? Starfield for example now has the same graphics modes on Series x and s

Mr Bespoke

Hi DF Crew! Just quick question, does Oliver get paid double time for doing a Direct/Indirect in the early hours of the morning in his local time zone? Thanks And keep up the awesome work!

AfreemTheDream

Greetings. I've been asking you lot for a few weeks now what you believed would be the biggest gaming news/surprises to come out of Gamescom. Now that you're there: what are your individual biggest news stories/surprises to come out of Gamescom? Maybe you'll answer this time 'round! Cheers!

Parzival

Did Alex have a chance to look at the talk about CPU utilization in UE5 by CD Project? https://youtu.be/JaCf2Qmvy18

Mark Smith

With the buzz/ fanfare around Indiana Jones, do you think Xbox should have waited to announce the PS5 version? It seems that the online discourse I have seen has been mixed to negative about their "but wait, there's more" moment at the end of their presentation. Should Xbox have given their customers some breathing room before announcing the PlayStation release?

Jan Willem van Beek

Have you ever thought about plotting something akin to 1e2*(frametimes/ma(frametimes) -1), where ma is some moving average. This should capture the relative discrepancies between current frametimes and the moving average, which results in perceptible judder. For example, frametime differences of 4ms while average frametimes are 30ms are not a big deal, but if average frametimes are 8ms they can be distractive. Perhaps you have already dome something like this, and I've just missed it up to now.

Auro

I can’t help but wonder if high quality CRT monitors are the best way to experience Black Myth Wukong. Very high RT feels out of reach for 4k60 even when upscaling from 1080p. Have you tested CRTs with this title?

TheMagicStick

I have a 16:9 Philips HD CRT TV that has hdmi out. Although, I don't own a PS5. The PS5 does support 1080i. I can see myself grabbing a PS5 when the PS6 comes out just to use my HDCRT. I keep it safely stored in my chilly basement 3 feet off the ground. I also have a Sony HDCRT but its a 4:3 36" beast. I keep a hacked Wii connected via component hooked up to it. All I need now is a CX Oled and my collection will be complete. I still use a 60" 1080p panasonic plasma for my main gaming TV in the living room that stays connected to a PS4 Pro for the kids. My console(SeriesX) and PC are connected to a Gigabyte 4k 160hzVRR ips panel.

TheMagicStick

I really like my Series X. I would not have purchased it without a disc drive being included and back compat. Its the sole reason that I own it, and for the occasional game of Diablo 4 or Starfield.

TheMagicStick

I for one would love to have Doom RT available. I think it would run fine at 60fps with super resolution enabled.

DaJaCo

The smartest move for them was to release a £349 digital series X with a removable / add on drive to compete with the PS5, instead we get a hobbled Series X with a tiny discount? I'm also surprised they havent started subsidising the console by bundling Game Pass with it. i.e. £349 for digital series X or £399 for digital series X + 12 months Game Pass Ultimate.

TheMagicStick

I don't think Xbox being a business first is news to any Xbox Fanboys. They have been this way since the beginning. Don't let Philly G fool you with his mighty shifty well worded and crafted revelations. He's just a dude with a job, and it's always been that way. He just gets to play games at work, that's nothing new these days.

TheMagicStick

I think the Series X could handle Black Myth RT just fine with its current silicon.

TheMagicStick

Is UE5 to much for current Gen consoles to handle or is it just in its infancy and being poorly optimized?

OnlyWeeklyShow

Heroes of Might and Magic is BACKKKKKK BABBBBY!!! Any thoughts?

Having established that Intel has lost the plot with their high end CPUs, what's all this noise about the Ryzen 9000? Will x86 finally come to an end just because we've hit the limits of making high end x86 processors?

Richard Leadbest

Hi folks! Sony shouldn’t be happy with the performance of Wukong on PS5, as explored by Oliver and Alex. And yet they just might be, seeing how they could finally have a much needed selling angle for a pro console on their hands here, don‘t they? Cheers from Hamburg

Perfect_Organism

Go on lads - did you see the Switch 2 at Gamescom 2?

Speedworth

Hello from the states, my Bespoke Brothers! What’re your thoughts on Gamescom so far? What’re you most interested in, and were you surprised by any reveals?

Perfect_Organism

Tried to explain to a friend who’s into tech, but less into gaming, about the purpose of the PS5 Pro’s existence. Gotta tell you, explaining the current gen history of upscaling tech and what Sony might be doing to remedy those various issues with the PS5 Pro was not a succinct conversation. How do you reckon Sony will market this thing to everyday Joe?

Ostx78

Hello there esteemed gentleman. With what we suffered at the beginning of this generation in terms of marketing with the promise of reality splitting visuals from a full fat “gold top” RDNA2 boasting RT, VRS, Mesh Shaders, and Geometry Engines, Sampler Feedback Streaming, and let’s not forget crazy I/O including the ethereal but mainly just words Velocity Architecture. Only for vast swathes of the Dev community to centre around a path of least resistance leaning on a combination of FSR, TSR, and DSR to get the best bang for the buck delivering their visual feasts. Did Microsoft & Sony focus on the wrong features? What’s your view on the features they should focus on going into the next generation to deliver on the promise of “the biggest technical leap ever in a generation”? Is PSSR a glimpse? The last owner of an Atari STe signing off…

Horselle

Hello DF team, since Phil Spencer can’t explain why I need an Xbox can you help him out? I am getting the feeling the Xbox will become a pure software company and unsure if that just means being a publisher plus gaming cloud solutions. I’m getting concerned that my Xbox digital collection we’ll be unplayable after the next gen Xbox’s if it doesn’t sell well. As a knock on effect I’m starting to spend my money in the PlayStation store….what are your thoughts? I do think that the series X is a great console!!!

MGsubbie

What things did you guys study during college/university? How did you guys learn so much about how engines work, graphical settings, etc. Seems that sometimes you understand as much as actual game developers.

Alan

Hi Team! What is the vibe at gamescom from the pubs/devs, is it a negative or positive one? Considering all the recent consolidations, lay-offs, Ai influence and cancelled games etc?

Neotokyo

Hey DF crew, ive been concerned about my rtx 4070ti's obsolescence in the next few years, i recently watched a youtuber called Daniel owens video on 12gb gpus vram usage and saw that several titles with rt and framegen on went over the 12 gb framebufffer. Will this be another rtx 3070 situation where the gpu is capable but is held back by vram amount/bandwidth? Cheers!

Julian Shniter

Rich! What was your favorite demo you saw at Gamescom and why was it Switch 2 ;)

Jay Fischetti

Why is the Silent Hill 2Make going to be "twice as long" as the original. What is the point of that? Is it going to have leaderboards too.

Meatdreams

I just found out RAM disks are a thing (sectioning off a portion of RAM and mounting that as a drive). Have any of you guys tried doing this and running a game from it? I'd be curious to see if it reduces the lengths of traversal stutters in UE games. You'd obviously need some cavernous DIMMs to do it with something like Wukong, but a UE game demo/benchmark might comfortably fit. I know it's completely impractical, but I still want to know what would happen - for the love of science!

DaJaCo

Sure - but not at the level the PS5 Pro will, they could also fix half of the games problems by ditching FSR and switching to the consoles PSSR proprietary hardware accelerated upscaler.

DaJaCo

With "we're a business" Microsoft becoming increasingly open to releasing its games on other competing platforms to boost sales revenues. Doesn't the Switch 2 seem like an even better candidate for their games than the PS5? - It is less of a direct competitor, is likely to be a less capable showcase of the games (where the PS5 Pro might be the best console version very soon). It will also allow their games to access an entirely different segment of the market - i.e. the handheld only market. In fact, why are they bothering with the Xboy at all?

DaJaCo

The top 1% of the PC master race only use RAM Disks. NVME is for the peasants!

DaJaCo

Precisely my thoughts - It actually makes Switch 2 look like a better candidate for microsoft ports (from microsoft's perspective anyway)

DaJaCo

It does seem like they are killing their own game pass model. At least with the PS5 you can add a disk drive to the new models and then buy and SELL games on. So you can play day 1, sell later - where microsoft is trying to tie people into digital, and forcing you to wait unless you get game pass ultimate. The standard tier is basically just something people would buy for their young children, or for retro gamers? - scratch that - they'd want a disk drive.

DaJaCo

From a financial point of view it makes perfect sense, and arguably some of the current technical problems on PC (i.e. poor compatibility with old titles, relatively undeveloped drivers) would be less of a problem for a new console. I think the main concern from console makers would be that they have basically no relationship with intel, and that intel does not have staff familiar with developers - where Nvidia and AMD have very close relationships with dev teams. So perhaps it's mostly a social problem, and we all know how well R&D departments socialise..

DaJaCo

It's quicker and easier than doing lots of bakes! I'd like to see smarter combination of bakes and real time methods.. but do expect that ultimately baking will go the way of the dodo.

Ednamode

i can't explain it but Indiana Jones looks super last gen. I can't exactly point out what it is, if it's muddy textures or low density polygons... Is this a sentiment shared by the DF crew and if so, might they be able to point out evidence that explains my gut feeling?

DaJaCo

Beat you to this one - asked the exact same question 6 hours earlier!

Peter Shmo

In a world where the next “Xbox” is more PC-like (for example, it could play your steam or epic games store libraries), does Sony allow their PC ports to be playable on Xbox?

DaJaCo

Only Pros will understand, don't try explain it to amateurs.

Ostx78

Hi there, Outside of an Xbox handheld being added to their hardware roster there’s a lot of talk of the next Xbox being more PC like. I thought the Xbox Series S/X are currently very PC like with a very similar GPU architecture, Phison I/O controller, and the alignment of Direct X API’s and GDK? With that in mind do you think the next Xbox and "the biggest technological leap ever seen in a generation" could be referring to the evolution of the platform with store(s) integration as opposed to the hardware? Toodles…

Ryan Peters

With the news that Avowed is targeting 30fps on console, a lot of gamers on social media seem unreasonably irate. Lots of talk about how the game "must be unoptimized" or the devs must be "incompetent". Being a fan of nice smooth framerates this sounds like they have their priorities in check to me. In addition, the game does seem to be a UE5 title with the latest and greatest tech, so it makes sense to me why they chose 30. How do you feel about games like Avowed targeting 30fps, and is any of the "gamer outrage" justified?
