Thursday eh? After Lunchtime? That's my cue to stop whatever I'm doing, start to panic slightly about the content line-up for the next DF Direct Weekly and then to rush to Patreon to ensure that at least the Call for Questions post has gone up - and verily, here it is.

It's John, Rich and Oliver on the panel this week and we'll be talking about the upcoming disappearance of Concord as it's 'unlaunched', to paraphrase Nvidia, and we'll also be discussing the review reaction to Astro Bot. News stories of a power-hungry RTX 5090 and a 5080 that apparently outperforms 4090 will also be in the line-up, and we may well get caught up in the Switch 2 hype suggesting some kind of September event.

But here's where we ask for your input via the conveniently located comments box that is - inevitably - below. Topics for discussion? We'd like to hear them. Your reaction to the news stories of the week? Go ahead. In fact, any and all gaming and technology queries are welcomed, so don't hold back!

How did Quake 3 render ‘real’ circles, were they actually real circles, and why don’t modern devs do this?

What is good DF crew. I’m guessing we all gonna ask about concord. If you all have anything to add about it

Hello, gents! I have been pretty confused by the performance of DLSS 3 frame generation. The frame rate boost it gives seems to be game dependent and all over the map. In the age of 480hz OLED displays I had hoped to use it to amplify high frame rates in to the stratosphere, but I am not sure it is as well suited to that purpose as it is taking ray traced games to playable levels. Is it time to reassess NVidia’s claims about the value of DLSS 3 frame generation?

CodeMalfunction

Hello DF team, Do you think there’s any chance the PS5 Professional will apply the new upscaling algorithm automatically on PS4 titles? Some PS4 games never received a PS4 Professional update and are stuck on 1080p and can look pretty bad on a 4K screen.

What happens when the current consoles internal SSDs reach end of life?

Skyrim Super Championship Turbo Edition II

Some of the latest crop of games run very poorly - if at all - on Steam Deck. Is the time ripe for Valve to release a 32GB Steam Deck PrOLED, perhaps with a Strix Point APU? The Deck being a stable target for developers seems less important than being able to run recent titles. There are also plenty of 1st gen hardware issues that could be cleared up, like poor standby life, downloads during sleep and a better docking solution (e.g. a USB port on the bottom). There is also a window before Switch 2 launches or true next-gen successors to the current crop of Windows handhelds.

Hey DFs. You previously mentioned checking out some in-house streaming tech. Specifically, I think Oliver mentioned Sunshine and Moonlight. Did you have a chance to look into it, or is a whole video even in the works?

Rip Van Winkle

Just a heads up, the power draw on the new cards may not be as wild as people think: https://videocardz.com/newz/nvidia-expected-to-finalize-geforce-rtx-5090-and-rtx-5080-design-this-month-5080d-for-china-also-expected 550W for 5090, 350W for 5080. Total cooling capability doesn't necessarily indicate the final TDP. People also mix TDP and TGP up.

Question: Have you ever done research into the demographics of your audience? For instance, do you see lots of new viewers for certain games or is it relatively steady? Also, do you see more of an uptick in new viewers for popular IPs ( like Hogwarts Legacy) or popular games (like Wukong)?

Roach

Hi DF, I've seen multiple videos online comparing demos running on different versions of Unreal engine (3, 4, 5 etc.) that show noticeable performance drops have occurred with each later release. Even though the exact same demo is running in each version of Unreal with no additional features included from the later versions of Unreal. Why do you think this is?

Allan Lindqvist

What are your thoughts on Anandtech shutting down? I didn't see it coming 😢

Hi DF Team! I’m a little embarrassed to admit this but I’m only just now playing through Doom with the latest Nightdive remaster and I’m so thoroughly enjoying it. I’m playing on the Steam Deck and it’s such a great handheld experience. I’m curious, what is everyone’s favorite Doom Episode and Mission? Why? I’m really enjoying the intricate map design of Episode 3 (Mission 3: Pandemonium stands above the rest for me). The map design is so refreshing compared to the linear shooters of today. It’s basically a puzzle game layered inside an FPS - brilliant.

Do you think the failure of Concord and the subsequent success of Astro Bot will cause Sony to rethink their push towards live service games and instead consider publishing more classic single player titles similar to Astro Bot?

MGsubbie

Question for John. I'm a bit confused about your outspoken love for motion blur. You often talk about missing BFI on newer TV's, how LCD has bad blurring, the downsides of sample-and-hold over strobing. All of these about how they cause blur. But why do you love motion blur then? I understand they aren't exactly the same, but at the end of the day, motion blur still... adds a lot of blur. I am aware 30fps games need it, but per-pixel/full-screen motion blur basically still does the same thing, make everything look less clear. So my question is simple : Why do you love motion blur while hating all other forms of blurring?

MGsubbie

How did all of you become so knowledgeable about graphics and game engines? What did you all study in college/university?

Hi DF team - last week I finally entered the PC gaming space after nearly 25 years of exclusive console ownership, building my first PC with my brother. With my new rig powered by an RTX 4070 Super and Ryzen 7 7800X3D, I’ve been enjoying diving into games I’d loved on console with enhanced features - after playing RDR2 at 100fps on my 1440p ultrawide, there’s no going back for me. When you’ve upgraded a rig, do you have any go-to games you dive back into to see what you can eek out of your new hardware? Can you recall the components of your first self-build? Thanks for the pod, been a long time listener but after joining the PC ownership club, it only felt right to become a member and pose a question.

Spoggi99

Dear DF Team, I mentioned this under a previous post, but I thought I’d bring it up again as a potential topic idea, especially since you asked for suggestions a few days ago: What do you think about a video (or even a video series) focusing on different graphical elements in games and how they’ve evolved over the years? Topics like deformable snow, physics, water, or fog rendering come to mind. It could be fascinating to see how these aspects have progressed, and even how some effects or graphical elements might have regressed over time. This kind of series could really resonate with both PC and console players, helping everyone appreciate the technical standards we have today. Plus, it could offer insights into why certain graphical elements might have changed or even become worse in some cases. Keep up the great work - I look forward to the next DF Direct! :)

pngnat

What do you think will be the next breakthrough technology that future games will look to leverage/implement? Up until the current generation, there were clear areas that each gaming hardware iteration looked to improve upon, be it getting more polygons on screen, achieving more realistic rendering techniques, or using ray tracing and path tracing to more realistically simulate the behavior of light. Current graphical powerhouse games like Black Myth Wu Kong already look insane and my pea brain can't imagine what significant leap games can still make from here on out.

MGsubbie

Do you think Concord's failure will make publishers and developers think more about whether or not to go for GaaS games? (At least asking money for the purchase rather than being F2P.) Or are they still so lucrative they can fail multiple times, a single hit will make up for the sunk cost and then some?

Zero

Hi Gents! As the "Switch 2" nears closer to announcement, I have been thinking about the ways that data storage limitations and advances have shaped gaming history. For example, the Final Fantasy series was a Nintendo staple before the N64, where limitations in the cartridge storage compared to CD-ROMS led Square to jump ship to PlayStation. With rumors of Switch 2's power profile being closer to that of a PS4 and recognizing that the file sizes of PS4-era games have reached the 100GB range, how do you think Nintendo will handle these challenges? With rumors they are sticking with cartridge-based games, do you think we'll see a new technologically-induced exodus from 3rd party companies due to struggles with storage capacities, as well as load time constraints compared to more current hardware? Keep up the great work!

LittleMac

Hello there, how many rays per pixel would theoretically be necessary to not have to use a denoiser?

Eric Benoit

Do you think what made the PlayStation 2 library so great can still be a roadmap for Sony ? Seeing Silent Hill 2 and MGS3 remakes coming and many noting Stellar Blade having a PS2 quality, I like this much more than Concord 🪦 or Suicide Squad. Should they Stop spending time and massive amounts of money looking for more of that Fortnite money?

Michael

Hi guys. With the PS5 Professional coming, what do you think of the likelihood of it getting a full 48gbps HDMI port? Perhaps Dolby Vision gaming? Maybe even Dolby Vision playback of UHD discs?

Matt Hargett

What other “trapped” DS or 3DS games would you love to see get new life on Switch (or its successor)? For instance, I’d love to see WarioWare DIY make a reappearance.

Rich

If Concord is resurrected as a free to play game, then it will still be a game as a service. It's been long recognized that combining games as a service with a high upfront cost only works for extremely popular titles like Call of Duty and FIFA.

Rich

Neural rendering, imo. But there's a lot of work to be done even within path tracing...

Joe Esposito

Greeting DF crew, hope all is well with all of you. I've seen a lot of grumbling over the fact that we are 9 months into the acquisition of Activision Blizzard by Microsoft yet only very few ActiBlizz games are currently available on Game Pass. After the torturous process of buying the company in the first place, what are the team's thoughts on why we haven't seen more of ActiBlizz catalogue being used by Microsoft?

Joe Tangco

Speaking of Switch 2, what're your theories on its storage tech? Just thinking about how fast current gen can read from SDD, wouldn't Switch 2 need something much faster than SD cards to stay within striking distance of current gen?

Rich

Sandy Peterson's work in Doom 2 is still unmatched to this day. Wide open non linear city levels building upon what he did in Episode 3 of Doom 1. A very far cry from the locked-in "arena" levels of the modern games from Doom 3 on... apparently Dark Ages will be learning from this.

Rich

Exactly, the 4090 has a high TDP and TGP right now, especially in certain overclocked models, and yet in practice in most games it isn't that power hungry at all. 350w or less for a lot of games.

Rich

Nvidia never claimed frame generation would be useful for esports-style low-latency high-performance games, DLSS3FG was ALWAYS about bringing extremely demanding path tracing games into more playable and presentable framerates! Literally everything Nvidia showed in the lead up to DLSS3 was 40 to ~80, or 60 to ~120, in games like Cyberpunk or Spider-Man 2 with RT, not 120 to 240 in Call of Duty or whatever.

VeryProfessionalDodo

This might not be picked up by DF, but I think I can provide an educated guess. The answer is “far, far too many”. Denoisers are so important in the process of ray tracing that they have been used for a good long time in CG, where frame times aren’t even a concern. The amount of rays also varies dramatically according to scene. You might need just a few million rays for a cube on a flat surface, but as the complexity of the scene increases, the rays start scattering in more unpredictable and noisy ways. Glass and translucent materials (like water surfaces and water glasses) are notoriously hard to resolve, to the point where custom algorithms are made SPECIFICALLY for these situations, to better help predicting rays. Even then, the amount of noise is greatly reduced and the image coalesces much better, but it still requires either denoising, much higher samples per pixel, or both, to actually resolve into a clean image. Hope this answers your question :)

TheMagicStick

I have an Off Topic Question. What games do you guys play when you get some time to play what you want? Do you have some old favorites you keep going back to?

VeryProfessionalDodo

I think he only likes per object motion blur, not camera blur. That type of blur can be excellent in accentuating the sensation of motion. If you see a racing game with and without motion blur, it becomes clear which FEELS faster

MGsubbie

I am extremely confident he does not just like per object motion blur.

The closing of Anandtech is a huge moment in my life. I went into Electrical and Computer Engineering specifically because of reading Anandtech. There was no other site that could so clearly explain the magic of how computers actually worked like Anandtech. Hugely complicated topics and about half my Engineering degree were all discussed on Anandtech and I loved reading every minute of it. Release day of new processors were just as impactful as Christmas to me, filling my head with ideas and possibilities of what the future might hold and how it actually works in the present day. I wouldn't have my job without Anandtech. I wouldn't live where I do without Anandtech. My entire life as it currently stands has a clear line between where it is today, and that website. It's clearly not a bright day with the closing of Anandtech, but I see a lot of the same magic & passion from the DF team, which is partly why I'm a Patreon member. I want to help ensure your future so I can see how the latest & greatest tech works and what the future holds for all this technology. If someone cares about making journalism like this last for years to come, please help support DF on Patreon. I hope you guys can really dig into more technical and specific topics with your new PC benchmark suite to help educate the audience and developers themselves. Hopefully your passion for the work you do shines through your content and encourages another generation of engineering talent from your work.

Re: Concord being pulled - It's absolutely amazing how badly this game failed. Did the developer not have any outside feedback about the game before they launched it? It would seem that Naughty Dog saw the writing on the wall and cut their multiplayer game earlier on instead of burning more cash on a boondoggle like Concord did. I personally feel that games like Concord are a product of market analysists and not the vision of a game developer. When you have so many games coming out from smaller teams with a lot more focus and direction (like Helldivers), games like Concord & Kill The Justice League have absolutely no chance in the market. I feel that more than anything, this shows a game studio needs to trust it's creative team and lead developer over any of the business people. Do you guys agree?

Jonny_5a

Is there really much chance of a switch 2 announcement now? I figured their previous comments meant announcement before April and release next summer. Would give them one more Christmas to try to beat the PS2s record too

Someguyperson

Even if the rumors are true that the 5080 will outperform a 4090, how much do you think it will actually cost? I can easily see Nvidia pricing a 5080 at $1200 even though the 4080 Super is only $1000. I think Nvidia found out that they can sell a GPU for $2000 and that's going to be the MSRP of the 5090 as a result.

Joe Messerman

Greetings DF crew! How many more games like Concord have to fail spectacularly before we start to see a trend in the industry towards more linear, smaller budgeted single player/coop projects with perhaps more predictable ROIs? Are publishers and investors not paying attention to all the success stories of games like wukong, astrobot, spacemarine 2 etc.? What sort of market conditions & gaming climate is are needed for this sort of shift if its even possible? Thanks and thanks for all the great content you guys put out!

Someguyperson

Rich, you asked for some ideas on how to rate game performance, so here's my idea: just listing out the critical and marginal issues in a bulletized list. When running performance testing on a game, I think it would be really helpful to have a complete list like you had for Dragon's Dogma. I think breaking the issues down into major ones (that might include a bad framerate cap, stuttering, crashes, etc.) and minor ones would also really help because sometimes it's a bit difficult to tell if an issue you guys bring up is a big issue, or a little one (traversal stutter every 30 minutes vs. traversal stutter every 2 minutes). I know that doesn't really fit into the whole "Gold Award" concept, but I think that content like that stands the test of time better. The Dev has a clear list of prioritized fixes to make and the consumer knows what issues to look for as well as what issues might have been already fixed by the developers.

Hi Gents. How do you see the proposed Xbox "PC like console" successor actually moving the needle for Microsoft in terms of market share or revenue? I've got to say I don't really see how it would improve their situation, gamers might have access to Playstation games via Steam but Microsoft won't be getting a cut of that, and if most gamers do use Steam like they do on PC they won't be getting a cut there either. We also know they are unlikely to make any sort of significant profit from the hardware itself. I also don't understand how this would improve Gamepass numbers as that is already available on Xbox right now and isn't growing there. Someone make it make sense.

A bespoke question, if you will

I know it is a cliche by now to complain about quote unquote overuse of reconstruction techniques, and I've always agreed with you folks that most of the time the quote unquote reconstruction as a crutch discourse doesn't really reflect reality, especially on PC. However, after seeing a few recent AAA releases, the turning point for me having been Star Wars Outlaws, I'm starting to agree with people that say this is a kind of quote unquote cursed generation as it relates to low image quality. I have a 4090 -- and while I know it is a two year old card by now, it is still the best available by far and we don't even know when the 5090 is coming -- and even this monster of a card cannot run these AAA games with pixel-perfect sharp output. AW2 with PT + DLSS has plenty of artifacts on camera movement; FH5 even with DLAA -- basically the single best AA technique available out there for modern games -- has plenty of ghosting and aliasing on things such as wires from utility poles; and an otherwise gorgeous game, Star Wars Outlaws' grass sometimes looks like a painting influenced by an acid trip. Still, everyone in the industry seem none-the-wiser: NVIDIA keeps marketing DLSS as some kind of cure-all be-all solution, console developers keep releasing games with terrible IQ, and TAA-hate acolytes are still stigmatized all around. Are developers in need of some grass touching? Is a wake-up call oncoming? Is NVIDIA aware of this and, if so, would it be realistic to expect a monumental upgrade with DLSS 4 as it relates to IQ? Is all this just my autism rendering me unable to ignore these visual artifacts? Thanks and cheers.

Someguyperson

I fully expect Nintendo to not reveal anything else about Switch 2 until January 2025. If there is a Nintendo press event in September, it will be to announce some other games for the 2024 holiday season.

Link

What would your dream announcement event of the PS5 Pro and Switch 2 look like?

Alan

Hi Team, Concorde crashed and burned, will Marathon last the distance? If Sony wants a Live Service game, why not utilize their IP for the characters; Kratos with his axe, slow but very defensive with high damage close-range attacks, Aloy with her bow, fast & nimble with good ranged attacks, Etc (there is a full list on the Discord) sort of a Super Smash Bros and Overwatch hybrid, with characters we love and a simple F2P gameplay style.

Alan

Hi Guys, Where does Astrobot stack up in the platforming pantheon, better than Mario, Sackboy, Crash Bandicoot, Sonic etc. Must be right up there for game of the year?

Mr Bespoke

Hi DF crew! So Bandai have released the performance specs for Tales of Grace Remastered f and I was surprised to see that the latest gen consoles not including the Switch of cause don't support the feature at a 120fps mode at either 2160p or 1440p and was wondering if you guys might know what it could be setting it back in performance. Maybe possibly doable on 1080p? It will be interesting to see what the "Frankenstein" PC makes of all this or if someone who already knows could/would be able to shed some light on the situation, but until then we'll just have to sit tight and wait till January. Thanks and keep up the amazing work!

Simplex

What VR games did John play on gamescom? Batman Arkham Shadow maybe?

Communist Mister Rogers

Why don't games include real time information in real time cube maps like other cars in racing games or characters? Is it technically impossible or is there some other issues that presents from doing this?

tod weitzel

Should I bother getting a sealed copy of Concord on clearance at the big box store to use as an investment vehicle?

tod weitzel

Are there rendering techniques that were considered dead ends at the time (like quads) that have a chance of coming back? I remember seeing AMD cards back in the day having a feature that gave everyone in Counter Strike 1 balloon pants but it's impossible to find in a web search.

gartenriese

Microsoft said their next console would be the biggest leap in performance ever. What if Microsoft just licenses the brand to other manufacturers, as you previously suggested, and they hope that someone manufactures an Xbox with an RTX 6090 and that's how they will get the biggest leap ever?

RAVE_DAM0S

Hola Gents, let's get straight to it. It's common affair that games get released with instability on one platform or another. months and years of optimizations later - the very same game is running beautifully. Could AI and ML ever get tasked with bringing the same benefits we see with DLSS ... applied to optimization. Imagine a future where ML could identify all the best optimizations and presets before the game ever launches. Join me, oh digital foundry folk, in this dream!

RAVE_DAM0S

I hope this is exactly what Xbox does. Xbox begins to treat it's hardware how MSFT treats Surface. Xbox makes its own PC/console. And also allows other OEM's to make Xbox OS devices too.

Paul Trainor

Hi DF, I hope this epistle finds you adequately healthy to discharge your duties. The new PSVR PC adaptor puts me in mind of the Saturn for PC diamond edge card, or the 3do one. Things like these obviously end up being quite niche. Can you think of any hardware in the same vien as these (play a thing on another thing) that have been commercially successful? (I cant) Cheers guys! Paul

Anxiously Chrono Triggered

Hey DF crew, With more and more info coming up about SONY finally announcing PS5 Professional in September and looking at how awesome the new Astro Bot is do you think it’ll be the main game showing the new consoles capabilities? I’d say two new modes: 120Hz performance and 60Hz 4K quality with RT reflections (the only RT mode this game needs, TBH)? Cheers!

Anxiously Chrono Triggered

Hi DF crew, do you think we’ll see any ray tracing on Switch 2? With DLSS on I can see Witcher 3 with RTGI running on the hardware or C2077 with the RT shadows. I wish we saw any 1st party game with this feature but Nintendon’t do RT, I guess. Cheers

zephyr

Hi DF team! Watching the Astro Bot review I was particularly amazed by the degree of physicalized objects and interactiveness in the game, all while running at 60 fps! Why is it that we don't really see this in other games, even those that aren't pushing RT? Is it just a stylistic choice or are there other tradeoffs made that make it technically infeasible?

1040STF

In your opinion, knowing what we know about the PS5 Pro, what are the chances that Astrobot could reach 4K/120fps on it?

Kris Graney

Konnichiwa! Given the trials and tribulations developers are having getting Unreal Engine 5 running games at reasonable frame rates due to how “heavy” it is on the Xbox Series S, what hope is there for a more powerful (yet less so than the Series S) Switch 2 to be able to run current gen games on it? It’s likely to have less CPU grunt, less GFX horsepower, and less memory than the Series S. Will it require developers to be more creative and require more development such as bespoke dynamic scaling and frame generation? Ok, the Switch 2 may have those baked in with Nvidia hardware but they’re still going to require resources to run at reasonable frame rates with heavy engines consuming many CPU and GPU cycles. Finally, do you foresee developers choosing similar settings between the series S and switch 2? Love your work!

bjorktribe

*looks at Alan Wake 2 still not making royalties* If this incredible game is not profitable after almost a year, how can any investor group take any reasonable bet on a hundred million dollar game that ISN'T a live service money printer or an established and beloved franchise? I'd love to see more lower budget risks on original IP from major publishers, but the market at that level is also extremely saturated and tough to cut through. What is a major studio to do?

Anxiously Chrono Triggered

Hey DF, If Microsoft wants to get back on track with their „biggest leap in gaming history” console do you think they should name it Xbox Series Ly? Cheers

Anxiously Chrono Triggered

Larian made a masterpiece of a game last year which is as far from the games as a service genre as possible and it’s been making a lot of money! I couldn’t believe BG3 was so good for more than 100 hours it took me to finish it. I still think the best strategy is to make a game that dedicated players will love. Something akin to BG3, Witcher 3, Astro Bot. With Alan Wake II I guess that a lot of gamers still wait for the Steam release…

Treefinngers

Hey Gents! So PhysX and SLI for gaming GPUs is gone forever. I've been thinking about what a modern expansion card would be. I think they're cool ideas 🤷🏻‍♂️ I'm super curious what thoughts our DF Power Panel thinks! I propose a dedicated RT/DLSS accelerator card! Bring Frame gen, PathRT etc to 30 series cards Could DLSS and RT be run on 2 separate GPU cores in parallel or in fragments? Ex- Main GPU does all the RTGI, PathTracing. RTX Jr. takes those frames ray reconstruction, DLSS done.. sends finalized frames What would be the best replacement to SLI bridge? USB type C to C run full size external GPUs Could the Vram issue be solved too? If the expansion could combine VRAM in a pool we’d kinda win back SLI in a waasy So does any of this accelerator card sound cool to you guys? Thanks as always! P.S. N64 got a Vram expansion! MS.. Nvidia.. you're gonna be upstaged by Nintendo 30 yrs ago?? lol

Alex's Retro PC

Hi team, with the new RTX 5000 series nearly upon us, what are your favourite built in benchmarks? Whether that's for the technical data they provide, how they're configured or just pure spectacle.

bjorktribe

The steam release is a really good point. Probably a big factor in Outlaws underperforming as well

monkfruit ninja

Hey DF dudez, With the 30th anniversary of PlayStation looming. Could we see a return of Ridge Racer? I would even be happy with an updated collection starting from the beginning. Thanks for all your hard work.

Groovy Duck

Howdy Gents. From John's review of Astrobot, I don't think he really said a singular negative thing about the game, not counting the lonely frame time spike. By my impressions of Astrobot without playing it yet it looks like John is still spot on. But, for the sake of content I must ask you John: What nitpicks do you have with Astrobot? It's like they say in school, there's always room for improvement.

TheUnrealRich

Hello Foundrymen, in your „next week on digital foundry…“ Post you sometimes say that one of you is working on embargoed content. Do these embargos really include not even being allowed to say what game or hardware it is you will be covering? Or is there a different reason you are not naming the thing? Keep up the good work and greetings from Germany.

Horselle

Where does the DF team see Microsoft in 15 years, no more hardware? Games as a service plus tiers for performance levels on the cloud? Will I have access to digital games that I bought or have I bought a license that can be revoked? Do they need to do more with the play anywhere approach, my purchasing habits on the Xbox store are starting to be based on it as I know I will have a pc version as well…..why isn’t the master chief collection part of it?

digitalfoundry

Some explicitly say it's OK we've got the game. Others are specifically non-disclosure agreements which are self-explanatory.

digitalfoundry

That's interesting because in our look at Unreal Engine 5.4, we saw substantial performance increases in the Matrix Awakens City Sample demo vs 5.0.

Gochomer

Hi DF Team! If the future Xbox ends up being a licensed PC (similar to the Steam Machines) that would mean that developers would be targeting one console less, and maybe release better PC ports? How do you think that would work? Each machine with a graphics preset? Would the users need to configure it themselves or at least have access to a wider range of options? Thanks and congrats on all your work!

DaJaCo

With the recent leaks of the PS5 PRO 'Sketch' and now Sony leaking a near identical outline image in it's official 30th anniversary media - It looks like the PS5 Pro announcement is imminent. For me there is one remaining burning question with the PRO - with its 300 TOPS, and perhaps other features that facilitate PSSR, how likely do you all think it is that Sony will at some point introduce a frame generation feature to PSSR; ideally a hardware accelerated one. Surely the absence of such a feature would be something of a miss for the console? - or perhaps it'll just push more games to 60, making them better candidates for FSR3 frame gen?

DaJaCo

Maybe they should have launched with a disk version, instead of forcing people to buy digitally? Even with the upcoming disk release, the hype train has left the station.. Perhaps if the disk version also includes some PS5 Pro enhancements etc. It could start to win over a larger audience.

bjorktribe

That may help, but I'm sure some market analyst was done and concluded that the additional cost to manufacturer wouldn't make up for the gain in potential buyers. And regarding BG3, that is a huge success, but it also had almost 3 years in early access before it's 1.0 release. It's also a much beloved franchise vs Alan Wake - not that AW doesn't have it's fans, but it's just not in the same league as Baulder's Gate which has seen port after port of 1 and 2 throughout the years on every ding dang platform there is. The mind share was maintained.

Rich

Don't miss the forest for the trees, the biggest and most sucessful games are generally free to play games as service. Fortnite alone is bigger than every success story you mentioned combined. Same with Roblox. Call of Duty too, and that isn't free to play! I wouldn't rule out Concord coming back as a free to play game with some moderate success. What people tend to repeat on social media =/= the actual bigger picture in the real world.

Rich

It's only a failure because they got greedy and wanted to charge money for it. Should have been free to play from the start. Sony probably will re-release it as a free to play game.

Rich

Quake 3 did not directly rasterize curves, it used Bezier patches to build curves out of polygons. Carmack talked about this, everything still ultimately comes down to triangles. If you run Q3 on a modern PC and set the r_lodbias and curverror values low enough, it seems really smooth because there are lots of triangles, but if you use r_showtris you can see the triangles outlined. Id tech abandoned this for Doom 3 because the lighting system needed consistent geometry, and ever since polygon budgets have gone so far up the technique is irrelevant. Nanite makes even LODs themselves obsolete!

Dave Brown

Did the PS5 Pro leaks mention anything about increasing HDMI 2.1 bandwidth from 32 > 40Gbps?

Aaron Espinello

My question is where is the Star Wars outlaws optimized settings lmao

Pixelbrei

When I'm on vacation I usually fall back to GeForce Now for my gaming. However games with high frequency detail (e.g. Star Wars Outlaws grass) can easily turn into a pixelated mess. Do you think it'd be technically and economically possible for NVIDIA to develop a power efficient chip for game streaming that applies DLSS upscaling and frame generation after the pixel information has been received to reserve more bandwidth for pixel information?
