This episode is great fun. It's interesting to note how Saffron customises her seductions: Mal gets a Christian-inspired religious seduction (we know that during the war he was a believer), playing on his morality; Wash gets a more non-religious mythology, combined with the forwardness he likes; and Inara gets a 'I want to be like you' ploy, where they could share the same feelings. Clearly Saffron is incredibly good at reading people, as well as the other talents she shows. KL, given how short Firefly ended up being, there are various bits of lore they never got a chance to explain in the show, but that have been confirmed externally by the writers or in the official companion media - some of it is best to wait until the show is done due to potential spoilers, but some can be explained as we go. Would you like to be told if appropriate and non-spoilery?

OK, so part of the reason that Mal doesn't talk about where he's from is that his home, Shadow - one of the planets orbiting in the Georgia 'system' - was rendered uninhabitable by the Alliance during the war. To give you an idea of locations, the core/central planets orbit White Sun, which is the main star in the 'verse. The two most important planets in the White Sun system are Londinium and Sihnon (where Inara is from). Further out, there are four more star systems orbiting White Sun, each with their own solar systems: Red Sun, Blue Sun, Georgia and Kalidasa. Of the planets/moons mentioned/visited so far, Persephone is at the edge of the White Sun system, Boros and Whitefall are in the Georgia system, Jiangyin, Greenleaf and Triumph are in the Red Sun system, and Beaumonde is in the Kalidasa system.

And with this episode, I had fallen in love. I was already thoroughly enjoying myself, and the pilot--Serenity--was one of the best I'd ever seen. But this episode just brought it in for me. Also, "That's why I never kiss 'em on the mouth" may just be one of the greatest lines of dialogue I've heard. And of course, "If you take sexual advantage of her, you're going to burn in a very special level of hell. A level they reserve for child molesters and people who talk at the theater." Preach, Shepherd, preach!

An official map of the 'verse does exist, but it's been out of print for many years now 🙁 I would recommend the Firefly Encyclopedia, but only once you've finished the show (plus it covers a few of the canon comic continuations)

This episode was as close to a perfect Firefly episode as could be!
