So as mentioned in a previous post I ended up recording the timelapse of making this piece!
As well as some step by steps.
Here's a rundown of my workflow with this kind of render style I do;
01. I first start off with my sketch (this one was done during my lunch break at work).
02. Clip studio paint has this really interesting feature called 'colourize' where if you tell it to reference your lineart/sketch layer and then you give it colour suggestions it will "attempt" to render your picture for you. I mainly use this to create an interesting array of flats to then use to render the whole piece. I've found the way the AI tries to blend the colours makes for some really nice colours to pick from.
03. And this is where the tedious part starts. Which is just start rendering! Since I was referencing an image I was able to follow it for where the shadows and highlights would go. Picking and choosing colours that the colourize picked out and also using some of the original ones I had roughly thrown down.
04. A lot of the time when I'm rendering I'll use the levels to darken or add more contrast to parts, as sometimes the colorize does tend to make very washed out balanced colour ranges, especially with Hawks' skin tone, as I tend to want him to be more tanned looking than Enji. Another thing I like to do is have a black layer above my artwork and have the layer mode set to 'colour', then when I turn the layer on I'm able to check over my values as I'm working, and usually that is a good indicator if I'm going in the right direction.
05. I just kept rendering everything, adjusting levels when needed until I get to a point I am happy with everything, usually the end is final touches, things like highlights, adding in maybe bounce light.
06. I add a texture ontop of the artwork and also make a copy of all my colour layers, merging them together ontop of the other unmerged rendering, setting the layer mode to 'colour' and down to 20% and then run through CSP gradient map feature to kind of add some nice toning to it as well as help the colour marry together a bit better. This stage I usually play around with a lot, click through all the gradient maps I have, adjusting the opacity of the layer, etc till I end up something that I'm happy with. Sometimes it takes multiple gradient maps for me to get the desired effect I want.
And then its done! This is roughly how I go about rendering in this style, sometimes there are extra steps, but for the most part this is the core of how I go about it.
This piece took me 7hrs to do, but I hope you enjoy looking at the 1 minute timelapse attached to this post that makes it seem I did it all much quicker xD
