Tim gave off a big sigh. His work… Well, it's not like it's bad, but the stress has been really getting to him lately. With always a lot of uninteresting things to do, it was no wonder that he got the feeling that he needed to do something more exciting in his free time.
He was currently on his way home, watching, or rather rewatching, the anime “Fate kaleid” on his phone as he strolled along the streets. And sadly those were also his only plans for the rest of the day. Walking home and watching anime. Not exactly what he would call an exciting passtime.
Therefore, as the episode ended, Tim let out another sigh and adjusted his glasses as he briefly held his head. His fantasy went wild again, because he was so bored with his situation. Images of him swinging around swords, shooting arrows with a bow and using magic like what was typical for the Fate series shot through his head.
“I am way too old for this…” Tim mumbled, knowing that a 29 year old really shouldn’t have fantasies like that anymore.
When he was younger, he had been the kind of kid that loved to pretend that he was inside of these kinds of fantasies. Gathering up with friends and all playing outside with sticks pretending to be swords… those were good times for him.
That sort of playing outside was almost entirely replaced with video games as he got older. Meeting up with friends and turning on a console for some sort of multiplayer action was not uncommon in his schooldays.
Sadly, as an adult, playing games in multiplayer with friends had become a luxury. Coordinating that everyone has time had become so difficult, that Tim often had to play games solo. And playing alone just started to feel empty after a while.
“But what can I do…?” Tim asked, not really expecting an answer. He just sighed and shook his head.
“Are you looking for something magical and exciting to do? I think I can help you with that.” A female voice rang through the streets and it felt like it was reverberating through Tim as well. He turned around on the empty street and saw that a lone woman was sitting on the bench he had just passed, even if he was pretty sure that no one was sitting on it as he passed it.
The woman was even dressed somewhat weirdly, looking like an unconventionaly black dressed nun, but showing way much of her legs from what would be normal for a nun. She also had orange hair, exotic looking dark skin and blue eyes that almost looked like they could shine through the night.
“Do you want to hear me out? I promise I’ll make it worth your while.” She spoke and looked directly at Tim, then gave him a brief wink.
If something like that would happen on any other occasion, Tim would have just dismissed her, searched for some sort of excuse and then continued on his merry way. But not this time.
Without even thinking too much about it, Tim walked back to the woman who gestured to him to take a seat as well. Something in her voice was warm yet persuasive, cozy yet commanding. At no point did he even remotely consider that she could have been lying, that thought just never occurred to him.
“So you do want to go on a magical adventure. Just like you have always imagined, right?” The girl asked and gave a warm smile at Tim.
“Yes… But how would you be able to… Who even are you?” He asked. He didn’t even realize that she sounded like she had read his mind, nor that he had just answered honestly on a question that sounded ridiculous. He was just filled to the brim with curiosity and hope.
“My name is Nagisa Fulkami, and let the ‘how’ be my problem. Let's see… From what I can tell you really like the Fate series, is that correct?” Nagisa asked in return, tilting her head a bit curiously.
“Uhm, yes. I was just watching it too, even if just a spinoff of it…” He said and turned his head away slightly. He was just too embarrassed to say that he liked Kaleid more than the original animated show, but there was also no need to go into further details as well.
“I see. I think that I have just the right thing for you. If you are just willing to answer one final question for me, then we can start with your fun right away.” Nagisa snapped with her finger and suddenly she was holding a small deck of cards in her hand. Though the backside had a pattern Tim had never seen before.
“Out of the eight classes in Fate, which one do you think would you like to have the most?” She fan-ed the cards up and turned them around to show the front side. The cards looked awfully familiar and it really didn’t take him long to know from where.
Those were the eight class cards from fate kaleid.
“Go on. Pick one. Don’t be shy~” Nagisa giggled and held the cards closer to him.
After a bit of deliberation, he realized that there only really was one card he ever considered. So after giving it one final thought and realizing that it probably won't make that much of a difference what he chose, he reached for a card and gently pulled it out of her hand.
“Yeah, I know that it isn’t very creative, but I am picking the Archer card. The strongest servants were in that class… also Kuro is definitely best girl in kaleid.” For some reason he felt the need to explain his choice, making Nagisa giggle even more.
“Well then, if you are happy with your choice, then the real fun can start now.” Nagisa said and stood up from the bench. She stretched out her hand for him to take, that he had just noticed wasn’t holding the remaining cards anymore. “Are you ready?”
Something deep inside Tim was getting really excited. This whole situation still was very weird, but he had gone along with it this far, so might as well see it through to the end. So he took her hand, when suddenly darkness overtook him. He tried his best to fight it, but his resistance was completely overwhelmed and his consciousness quickly faded.
—-
When Tim’s strength returned to him and he slowly opened his eyes groggily, he quickly noticed that he was no longer on the street on his way home. He was not in his home either. It almost looked like he was in the middle of a cave, just that he was lying on a mattress that looked very out of place considering the surroundings.
“What happened? Where even am I?” He asked and stood up from the bed. Not only did he not know where he was he had actually no idea how much time had passed since he blacked out as well. For all he knew it could have been years since he was knocked out, though he highly doubted it.
But a faint shine from his right side quickly attracted his attention. He didn’t even notice that he was still holding the archer card he picked from Nagisa in his hand, and now it seemed to glow in pulses. It almost looked like it wanted him to look at it and use it.
“What now? How do I even use a card like that? It’s not like I can just hold it up and magic will automatically happen, right?” Tim joked and held the card up high. And then magic happened.
The cards' shine intensified, the light almost blinding Tim for a moment, before the card slipped out of his hand and started to float in front of him. The drawing in the form of a Lady with a bow almost seemed to move on the card now as the card as a whole floated closer and closer to him.
And when it reached his chest there was a very bright flash that illuminated the entire cave, before disappearing alongside the card for good. Tim touched his chest where the card had been seconds before, but it was nowhere to be found. Almost as if it had been absorbed into his body.
A sudden wave of weirdness washed over his body. His clothes were shifting and moving around his body, and he couldn’t even hold them in place with his hands because they just always seemed to slip on him.
The fabric seemed to stretch and tear, changing colors from his normal business attire blue into a more dark red tone. His pants tore as well, becoming way shorter and changing into a black color, while much of the fabric seemed to move upwards. And finally, all the lost fabric combined together into a somewhat torn but very cool red cape, reminiscent of what the archer class usually wore in the anime.
A small light appeared in front of Tim again, this time moving slowly towards his hand. For some reason he knew that he should reach for it, so he stretched out his hand and grabbed the light. He could feel it, it was solid. It changed its form in his hand until the shine stopped and it looked like…
“...a dagger?” Tim asked, looking at the object in his hand. It was a short weapon with a single blade in a style that looked incredibly fitting to his current outfit. He had a feeling that he had seen that before, but couldn’t quite point his finger from which archer.
“Hey, why is it that archers tend to use every weapon except bows? I mean, they have bows, but still.” Tim scratched his head, then thought about his current situation a bit more. He was now wearing an outfit clearly meant for archers in fate and had a fitting weapon in hand.
“I think I know what's going on… Must be a dream of some sorts. ” He shook his head, then looked for a way out. There was only really one way leading out of this ‘chamber’ he was in, so he didn’t really have much of a choice when picking his way.
He started wandering down the path while still eyeing the dagger in his hand intently. He had no idea where he currently was and whether he was in a dream, a video game or somewhere else entirely. But one thing was for certain, he did look battle ready, and that scared him a bit.
His clothes, weapon and even the card all seemed to hail from the fate series, and the people from there tend to solve problems by fighting. A lot. Literally the whole point of the series is that there is constantly a war going on. Yet… The only time Tim had ever fought before was in video games.
The hallway led to another round and empty room, with nothing of interest inside besides the exit on the other side and another card that looked similar to the one he absorbed floating in the middle. If he had to go by what games had taught him, then this looked like a boss fight.
Tim took a deep breath and stepped into the room, fully expecting that this would trigger something. Suddenly dark mist seemed to seep out of the floating card and proceeded to gulf it up completely. Yet the sphere of darkness just seemed to grow bigger with every second.
When it seemed to finally stop growing, it slowly drifted to the ground, releasing a hefty gust of wind when it impacted on it. The mist changed shape, compressing on some sides while expanding on others. It was fascinating for Tim to watch it shift around into new forms.
At first it just looked like a blob, then it changed to look like it was standing upright. Then it started to resemble the form of a human, and next it looked undoubtedly feminine, with a big skirt appearing as well as a clear emphasis on the chest. Finally, lots and lots of the mist condensed around her hand as a shining longsword manifested in her hand, clearly differentiating itself from the still completely black silhouette of a woman.
The shadow pointed her weapon at Tim, and even with his limited understanding he knew that she was looking for a fight. He as the Archer against her as the Saber, just like in Fate. Now he only had to test if he really could use those powers and it was somehow getting him pumped up to try out.
“Let's try some things out, shall we~” He shouted as he dashed towards the shadow, with her standing her ground and anticipating his attack. He slammed his dagger down and she blocked, pushing both away from each other.
He just dashed faster than he had ever ran before and even though that blow of the shadow was strong enough to push them away from each other, he didn’t lose his balance and could even reasonably assume that he was attacking with a similar level of force.
“Whoa,” Tim gaped at the power behind his own attack and that of his opponent. There is no way that a normal human would have emerged unscathed out of that exchange, but here he stood, completely unharmed. But the shadow was unharmed as well, meaning that it would take a lot more to win this battle.
He grinned, excitement building in his stomach. This wasn’t at all what he expected fighting in his body to be like, but he couldn’t help but be happy. If this was some sort of dream, then he wasn’t sure that he wanted to wake up from it all. He charged again, eager to have another exchange with the shadow monster.
As their weapons collided again he could feel a tingle racing through his arms, as if they got charged with electricity. This time however, it felt to him like there was less resistance from the shadow than before. That meant that either the shadow was getting weaker already, or he had leveled up. In either case, now was the time for attacking.
With a flurry of stabs and swipes, Tim went on the offensive. And even if the shadow parried every attack flawlessly, she still got pushed back by the sheer force of each attack. The force was so great that even Tim could feel it reverberating throughout his body every time their weapons clanked.
What he didn’t notice at that point was that everytime shockwaves were sent through his body, it shrank in size, even if just a little bit at a time. His arms, being the epicenter of the vibrations, slimmed down at an incredible rate.
After the first few strikes the hair on his arms was almost completely gone, as if knocked off by the shockwaves. Then the shadow locked weapons with him again, sending a constant stream of vibrations through his arm and causing it to shrink in size while his muscles reduced dramatically.
But he didn’t get weaker. There was something else flowing through his arms now, something way more powerful that his muscles ever could have been. So with even more strength than before, he now easily pushed the shadow back, looking like he was about to topple her.
But in one swift movement, she swiped his dagger to the side and thrusted the hilt of her sword against his stomach, then delivered a kick against his stomach that sent him flying for over 5 meters. And proceeded to run at him full speed for another follow up.
Tim almost felt like everything was moving in slow motion. His stomach didn’t really hurt all that much, considering that he had just received a fullpower kick by a lady with heels on. But still, he was on the ground and the shadow was charging at him for the first time in this battle.
He rose to his feet as fast as he possibly could and held his weapon up high, hoping the block the overhead strike of the approaching shadowy figure.
CLANK
On one knee, Tim was barely able to stop the heavy swing of his opponent as a loud metallic sound almost deafened his ears. Her power from above was no joke, and he was at an even worse position as he couldn’t fully stand up and was still feeling the pain in his stomach.
Though as suddenly a pleasant heat spread through his core the grinding standstill gradually shifted in his favor. As he resisted getting pushed into the ground from above, his height started decreasing again, making him now around the same size as the feminine shadow he was fighting, even though he was practically towering over her when the fight started.
The heat in his waist started to intensify, bringing with it a lot of strength for Tim and slimming down his waist as it did so. As he arose from his kneeling position, his waist had already been reduced to about half its original width, taking with it much of the broadness of his shoulders and hips as well.
But all of that didn’t matter much to Tim, as he pushed the shadow away from him at last, giving him a lot more breathing room than before. Both of them stared at each other in silence for a while, thinking about what their next move in this fight should be.
“...did she get bigger? She must have absorbed more mist somehow. Better finish her quickly before she gets even larger…” Tim muttered, completely focused on the battle at hand and not noticing much else besides that. And with that, both stormed at each other at the same time this time.
They met in the middle, their swords clanked, but Saber gave off no signs of stopping. She pushed him aside and continued running, redirecting her speed to charge at him again. Tim was fast on the pick up, so charged as well, meeting her and her sword again for a split second before they ran past each other, ready to repeat the cycle.
This was a test of speed and endurance. Whoever had more speed had more power behind their blows. And whoevers feet gave up first would get trampled by the other. No wonder he could feel this magical energy that gave his body massive strength concentrate at his feet at that moment.
With every step he took, another bit of his height was stripped away from him, but not from his legs oddly enough. Those seemed to become smooth and soft, as muscles receded and the hairs on it disappeared. Yet that only seemed to further the energy pumped inside of him, making him run even faster than before.
And, with one final exchange, Tim toppled the shadow, throwing her to the floor for the first time this match. By this point, even if he had a lot of strength left, he was exhausted and needed to stop for a hot second to regain his bearings. The shadow looked even bigger to him than before, but despite that the fight seemed to get easier for him, not harder.
Even though he didn’t realize it yet, Tim looked nothing like he did before. Gone was the man that was about to reach his thirties, as now he looked a lot like he was about 15, if not even younger. And also, everything about his body looked a whole lot softer, making him almost look androgynous by this point.
But he knew that the fight wasn’t over, the shadowy figure rose again from the ground and held her sword high above her head. Tim could literally see energy from all around gather at her blade, making it grow in size, glow in a golden color and look very scary to get hit by.
“I take it that this is your best shot, right?” Tim asked, then blinked a few times as something seemed odd about his voice. It was higher and way more squeaky than he remembered. Sure, he never had the deepest and manliest voice around, but now he almost sounded like a highschool girl rather than the man he was.
“Waaaa~” Tim screamed as he saw the huge blast of energy heading straight for his face. The shadow had noticed that Tim was distracted, if only for a moment, and decided to unleash its attack in the form of a massive shockwave right at their adversary.
The attack was strong, pushing Tim who was just barely blocking it with his arms and dagger further and further back. His arms felt incredibly heavy, but he couldn’t afford to stop. The blast was right in front of his face and if he let go, who knows what would happen to him.
He could even feel the tingle of the energy on his face intensify the more he got pushed back. All blemishes on his face that had survived the previous changes evaporated in an instant, giving his face a much more perfect look than before. The corners of his jaw smoothed out as his skull shifted, making him look a lot younger, softer and even girly.
His nose shrank down under the pressure of the shockwave, leaving behind only an adorable button nose. On the opposite side, due to him intensely staring at the blast, he felt like his eyes were straining, but in actuality they were changing to, becoming wider and bigger to round out his now very girly appearance.
The blast crashed him against the wall, but still didn’t stop pushing in on him. Now it became even more apparent for him, that the energy wave pressed on his entire body, not just her arms. For some reason, the pressure was particularly intense in his groin area. But the intensity seemed to decrease with time, as even a few seconds in, the blast had considerably shrunk in size.
“NOW! HYA!!!” He flung his hand outwards with every bit of energy he could muster and disintegrated the shockwave, and with it it’s intense pressure. But he now felt kind of empty, as if a certain part between his legs that made him a man gave up without him realizing, vanishing into nothingness as a result of the shockwave.
Strength was leaving Tim, the fresh new girl, quickly, because that move took almost everything she had out of her. So she collapsed on the floor while panting heavily. As her body slid down against the wall behind her, her hair started to cascade out of her head, growing longer until she finally sat on the floor and her hair was touching the ground as well, even if she barely sat upright.
The shadow also looked exhausted, but still walked towards her to seemingly finish her opponent off for good. Tim watched her slowly approach, not moving a single muscle the entire time. But as she rose her sword above her head to strick again…
“HYAAA!!!” Tim screamed and threw her dagger with insane power, piercing through the shadow Saber and flinging her backwards, across the arena and into the wall on the other side. With the dagger stuck in her stomach and pinned to the wall, the shadow could no longer move. This was exactly the opening Tim had needed.
“Did you know, my shadowy friend, that I was actually an Archer?” She said, manifesting a bow the size of herself in her hands. She had never fired a bow in her life before, but now was not the time to rely on memories or training. She could easily do it on instinct.
So she drew the string, and a shining red arrow manifested in her bow, glowing brighter the further she pulled back. She could feel her bows tremendous energy wash over her entire body and it felt good to be finally winning this fight.
As the magic intensified, her skin and hair started to change color. It was like her entire body had been subjected to a solarium, gaining a nice and exotic tan at an incredible rate. On the other hand her hair shifted from the dark brown it was before into a vibrant pink, before bleaching out into a pinkish white under the rays of the magic.
Having pulled the string as far back as she could, such that she could barely hold it anymore and even the ground seemed to tremble under her power, she let go of the string, and a massive arrow easily twice the size of her released from her bow. It shot across the battlefield and hit its target on its mark in less than the blink of an eye.
KABOOM
The arrow exploded on impact, causing a huge bowl of dust to be wiped up around its epicenter. But as the dust settled, nothing remained where she had shot the arrow, besides her dagger still stuck in the wall, and a lone Saber card on the floor. She had won.
Breathing a sigh of relief, Tim slowly strutted over to the card, picking up it and her dagger, before collapsing to the floor again. She needed a minute to recover.
“Oh my goodness, fighting is so much fun here, but god is it exhausting.” She spoke and noticed again that her voice was now completely off. It just didn’t feel to her like those words came out of her own mouth.
But before she could check herself out any further, she heard footsteps heading towards the place she was in. And as she turned to look she saw two familiar faces entering the room, even if she herself would have never expected to meet them personally.
“Illia and Miyu?” She said, looking at the two girls that had just entered. Both of them were in their magical girl outfits and looked battle ready, much to Tim’s dismay. But if they wanted to fight, then she would give it to them.
The next thing she knew was a giant blue and pink Blast heading straight for her. She tried to defend herself like before, but it was no use. She couldn’t stop it and was blasted against the wall again, feeling her consciousness fade from her. The last thing she saw was Illia running towards her and…
…
……
……”ro”……
“kuro”
“Kuro, can you hear me?”
Tim felt like she was being pulled out of a dream, while her head was still spinning in circles.
“I think she is coming too. I’m going to make some tea for her…” A young girl said and this time Tim could even understand it fully, as she was just kind of guessing before.
Groggily she opened her eyes, seeing an unfamiliar bedroom as she looked around. It kind of looked like a girls bedroom…
“Ahh!” Tim screamed for a moment and straightened up in an instant. She knew this bedroom. She had just seen it in the anime she watched. That was Illias bedroom.
“Good morning, Kuro. Feeling better today?” A girl's voice asked from next to her, and Tim was scared for a moment to turn her head. Indeed, Illia herself was sitting on the floor next to her, looking like she had been waiting for Tim to wake up for quite a while.
“Wha… How… I…” She stumbled with her words, making Illia giggle in response.
“I have never seen you so flustered like that, Kuro. Don’t worry, everything seemed to be back to normal.” Illia said.
Tim then realized something. This entire time, Illia had been calling her Kuro and she just accepted it. Like it was her second name. Like she knew that she was Kuro. It just seemed… normal to be called that… except that she wasn’t…
“Hold on…” Tim looked at the mirror across Illias room… and couldn’t see her reflection back. She just saw Kuro, the glorified Illia pallet swap from the Kaleid series, looking as perplexed as she probably would have looked like. There was no denying it. She had become Kuro… somehow.
“You know, I am really glad that you came back to your senses. Only an hour ago you were like a while animal, hunting down anything and everything. You even attacked us… again.” Illia spoke, awakening something deep within Kuro. It was like Illia was hurting her pride.
“Now hold on a moment! You were the one that attacked me!” Kuro shouted at… wait… no… Tim shouted at Illia in retaliation, but was quickly distracted by another matter. Kuro… Tim… she was both of them at the same time. There was no point in trying to be one over the other, so she decided at that moment that as long as she was with Illia and friends, she was going to go by Kuro, to avoid getting confused even further.
“You weren’t to be reasoned with. All you cared about was fighting, so we had to blast you to your senses…” Illia said and looked kind of ashamed of herself. “But on the bright side, you did manage to get us the Saber card in your frenzy. That's something, right?”
Kuro shook her head, unable to refute anything Illia said. In her honesty she knew that she was enjoying herself in that battle and she knew that she could easily lose herself in something she enjoyed very much. And honestly, she couldn’t recall much of the battle she fought before anymore either. All these accusations and thinking had made her throat dry…
“I am thirsty…” Kuro said, letting her head hang just a bit.
“Oh, that's no problem. Miyu will be back in a moment and bring us all tea…” Illia started, but Kuro knew already that tea probably wouldn’t help the type of thirst she was feeling. It was time to tease Illia.
“Not that kind of thirst.” Kuro smiled cockily at Illia, who at first looked confused. Then her face turned pale.
“Eh~? Now? But shouldn’t we? Eeeehhhhh~? Mmhhhmm~” Kuro didn’t even wait for Illia to prepare at all, but just flung herself at her and kissed her straight on her lips.
Kuro could feel the rejuvenating energy flow into her body, and Illia’s helplessly weak struggle against her kiss made it that much more enjoyable for her. This was definitely a feeling she could get used to…
“Kuro! I made you tea…eh?” Both kissing girls broke the kiss to stare at the door, where Illia’s brother Shirou with two cups of tea was standing. He looked incredibly confused and Illia grew redder by the second.
There was something about his face that Kuro just couldn’t describe in words. He looked… handsome? Was she really thinking like that? Never before had Tim in his life as a boy ever been attracted to another boy in the slightest, but just having Shirou watch the two of them made Kuro’s heart skip a beat. Was she picking up on Illia’s love as well? This was bad.
Or was it? It did feel nice after all…
“A-hem~” Kuro cleared her voice and sat up on the bed again, making both other frozen parties move again, even if both were still kind of red in the face. “Thank you for bringing me tea. I really needed it~”
“Ah. No problem. I thought I’d help your friend Miyu out for once.” He said and placed the cups down on the shelf next to Illias bed. He then retreated back out of the room. “I think I’ll leave you girls alone again. Call me if you need anything from me.”
And with that, he was gone. And one moment later, both Kuro and Illia burst into laughter. It was clear that both of them had a crush on the same guy and that both of them were in this magical journey together as well.
Tim still didn’t know when or even how he would return to his own world, but for now she was Kuro, Illia’s sister and partner in arms in those magical fights that stood before them. And that was a good thing, because as much as he disliked being a girl, fighting with magic made everything worth it.

Many people dream of becoming a magical girl. But most don't expect to suddenly become one~
Ps: I really loved writting the fight scene~
