I loveee the focus on the bond between Stefan and Damon during this season. Season 7 is one of my fav seasons tbh

The Phoenix Stone it was created to be punishment for whoever end up in it. So it tricks you into thinking that the purpose is liberating you, it is actually crushing you, breaking you until you get to the worse possible point, the point that hurts you the most. The breaking point for Damon is Elena and for Stefan is Damon, meaning, for Damon to get back to be the victim of his traumas and be governed by the dark side without being able to master it. For Stefan is using the fact that Stefan is incapable to face his issues, and one of his issue is co-dependency, due to the fact that he grow up having Damon as his only real parent and the fact that he is incapable to live an independent life without Damon. The hallucinations presented to him, are Damon in the worst possible light. We know that that is not the real Damon, but is the idea that Stefan had about Damon when he was blaming him for everything that happen in his life, to avoid to face his own problems with blood control. That Damon was the usual scapegoat, Stefan was conditioned to think as by his parents, what he learned growing up in that household, and he kept using Damon as he learned by being self righteous and judgemental with him, using him to dump his own problems, so doesn’t have to face them. That is Stefan inner child. But Stefan adult, realise how much Damon is also the only person that loves him unconditionally, the only parent he had, the only person he could truly rely on, hence his co-dependency. He couldn’t live and face an eternal life without Damon, so he forced his brother into this life with him. Therefore his worse punishment is to put him in a situation where he have to abandon his brother, to let him drown to liberate himself, starting with the concept that Damon without him would drown, but is the opposite Damon wouldn’t, Stefan would. We had a glimpse of Stefan's life without Damon in season 6, and he was “drowning”. So the stone is tricking him into thinking that he has to give up the person in all his life that is his anchorage to life, the stone use his co-dependency to hurt him the most, into thinking that he cannot be happy until he has Damon out of his life. But, even Caroline knows that that is not the reality of how things are, the reality is quite the opposite. Stefan happiness stands where he can have a life with Caroline and share it with his beloved brother. As it is for Damon, his “liberation” from Elena and his diving into his dark side is not what would turn him into his true self, but quite the opposite. His true self is what he conquered, by not being a victim anymore of his traumas and abuse, by mastering his dark side to use it for good things and to live his life surrounded by love, by the people he loves that loves him back, Stefan, Elena and his family circle of friends. The stone is actually a quite clever writers invention, it's the most possible evil you can imagine, using not your weaknesses, but your best assets, the things you care the most, twisting them and using them to crush you, to inflict maximum damage. Season 7 is so good.

Patpet

I agree. Season 7 it is so well writen and I love the clever use of psychology to give extra dept to the characters, to make them as real and as relatable as a character can be. And I love the focus on the brothers. Theirs is the most beautifully and poetically written love story that is at the core of the show. It's my favourite season, has got so many episodes were the writing is just writers goal and the acting of Ian and Paul is superb, delivering the writing in such a compelling way.

Newmoon comment 1: What I see that most people usually misunderstand about this story line that @patpet also talked about is that they think hellstone is trying to help Damon and Stefan and teach them something, the truth is hell stone’s purpose is to punish vampires, it’s not trying to help vampire with their traumas or make them better people, instead it would try to use their traumas and their subconscious thoughts against them by creating a psychological hell to feed in to their insecurities or twisting their reality, gas lighting at its finest, kind of like what Elena had to go through with the hunter’s curse in S4, when the curse was using Elena’s subconscious against her, it was trying to psychologically manipulate her that drove her to madness and to the point of taking her own life. Psychology has two side, once you understand the thoughts process and the behaviour patterns of someone and learn their psychology, you can either use those information to help them heal or you can use it to completely destroy them and that’s why narcissists and dark empath are such dangerous manipulators, they’re so good at reading people emotionally and psychologically and then use those information to their advantage to destroy people , the hell stone is doing the same and to make it even worse, it tries to disguise the punishment it’s giving as some sort of blessing by manipulating its victims to look at the lesson it’s giving them as valuable and productive lessons but in reality those lessons are designed to crush you to the core. So when you escape the hell stone (escape the torture) it’s gonna make sure you will suffer for the rest of eternity by making you do something that you could never forgive yourself for. if Stefan had gone through with actually burning Damon’s body, he would’ve never forgiven himself and he would’ve been in utter misery for the rest of eternity. Here hell stone tried to use Damon’s worst fear against him by making him burn the love of his life, Damon’s worst fear is to hurt the people he cared about, because of his protective nature, he wants to protect his loved ones from any harms and not to be the one who actually hurt them but because of the consequences of his traumas that created emotional control issues for him, he sometimes unintentionally ended up hurting his loved ones and this made him believe he’s not worthy of their love so here hell stone tried to feed in to his insecurities by making him believe he’s actually damage goods that he will eventually destroy everything good that happened to him because he doesn’t deserve it. Making him believe the false self that his traumas made for him to believe he’s actually the monster that everyone think he is and his true self is dark and twisted. none of it is true obviously but hell stone wants to make Damon suffer and knows exactly how to do it. We know that Damon struggles with his self-worth as the consequences of his childhood abuse, he’s having this constant inner struggle in his head, on one side his father’s voice and the voice of all his other traumas that made him feel worthless and on the other side of the fight is the voice of his loved ones who gave him unconditional love and gave power to his “self-love” that was buried underneath layers of false self and then brought it back to the surface again, as the result of fighting with his insecurities, Damon eventually started to feel worthy of himself and to lower down those poisonous voices inside his head that was proven to be nothing but illusion but now the hellstone is trying to play with his self-worthiness once again by giving life to those poisonous thoughts and pushing him over the line to the territory of illusion of his false self and sever his ties with those lovely and healing voices that could bring him back to the truth.

Newmoon coment 2: In order to understand Stefan’s hell we need to dive deep in to his mind and analyse his subconscious thoughts. Stefan was raised as a golden child, he was the child who just chosen to get all the affection and love, even though it was conditional, still he was the only one who gets it and at the same time he could clearly see how his brother has been treated terribly by his parents, everything that went wrong in the household was blamed on the scapegoat(Damon) and then he’d be punished for those mistakes so the golden child couldn’t help but feel huge guilt toward the scapegoat that he’s not the one who deserves the affection and it’s actually his brother who deserves it the one that was trying his hardest to please his parents but no matter what he does, he could never satisfy his parents, Pay attention to S7E7 how Stefan as a child was looking at Damon when he got punished by his father, he was feeling guilty and absolutely powerless that he as a youngest child couldn’t be able to help his brother, all he could do in that moment is to feel guilty. Now I want to talk about “golden child’s dilemma”, deep down golden child believes that he doesn’t deserve the affection but at the same time he can’t stand the idea of not being on the centre of attention anymore so if the parents even give a hint of affection to the scapegoat, they would try their best and even manipulate the situation to turn the attention back to them and they even feel more guilty for it, makes them feel even more unworthy and they will carry this to their adulthood so in order to deal with this overwhelming guilt that Stefan was feeling towards Damon, he started to develop this superiority complex to look at himself and Damon the way his parents do, to make himself believe that he’s maybe the better child and Damon is the actual SCREWED one, the one who makes all the mistakes and didn’t follow the rules like him. This was his way to cope with the guilt, to make himself believe he’s better than his brother so he doesn’t need to feel guilty for getting more attention than Damon but deep down he knows that’s it’s not true that he’s only getting affection because Damon is making himself the scapegoat to protect him, taking all the blame, doing all the dirty work the only one who gives him the unconditional love he yearns for so he develops co-dependency issues toward Damon, believing that he would never survive without his brother ergo the reason he forced him to completing the transition because he couldn’t even imagine living in the world without his brother by his side so every time Damon was in danger, it would crack his superiority complex and brings the guilt and his unconditional love for Damon back to the surface and made him sacrifice himself for Damon every time and now hell stone is trying to play with his superiority complex and his co-dependency issues and twist Stefan’s reality in to something that could completely destroy him, first of all he’s imagining Damon in the hell world the way he was conditioned to see Damon by his parents and the way his superiority complex made him, the one who put everyone in trouble and eventually would bring him down with him because he’s damaged good and cannot be saved, Stefan instead of seeing himself as the one who needs his brother’s help because that’s the reality, Damon has been the one who was rescuing Stefan from drowning since his childhood, protected him from the waves of his father anger and abuse but hell stone wanted to manipulate Stefan to completely give in to his superiority complex to see the only way he could find salvation is to let his brother go because he doesn’t deserved to be rescued, thank god Caroline was there to be the sane voice Stefan needed not to fall in to the stone’s trap. The hell world would do that knowing full well that Stefan would not survive without his brother and by making him let his brother go, he would be completely miserable and unable to find his salvation ever again and that’s what hell stone wanted for him to suffer for all the eternity and at the same time it was trying to make Damon believe the same thing that he’s damaged good that’s he’s beyond saving because he is just bad by nature and if he loves his brother, he should let him go, just like what he did to Elena, he would eventually destroy Stefan too. It’s trying to isolate the brothers and keep them separated from each other knowing full well, they would be miserable without each other and this way it would be impossible for them to ever find salvation.”

For some reason after last episode I thought Matt still had the Gilbert ring and that's why he was okay. I do think he still has it, but I doubt it works now because of the other side not existing anymore. I just forgot all of that I guess lol

Kitty Underwood

I think the thing that is keeping Caroline back is the fact that they're not actually her kids, and that she never planned to get pregnant much less thought it was even possible. I think she also doesn't want to overstep because they are Alaric and Jo's

Harry Allen

Im ngl, the same thought ran through my head during the outro 😂 I then remembered the other side stuff and decided not to mention it LOL

Kitty Underwood

I made this comment while halfway through the video, but you ended up covering most of these points by the end lol. I'm not sure if Alaric would have been okay from the start if Caroline had said she wanted to be involved though. Mostly because of the circumstances around Caroline's pregnancy being because Jo was dead. I'm not sure if he would have been ready to even think of anyone taking on a motherly role to the kids, even Caroline

Kitty Underwood

Tbh while watching the last video and every time you said it, I was like "Harry, he has the ring!" lolol

When it comes to the Phoenix Stone, well, it reminds me of Katherine, who was a dark empath who used what she learned from those around her to her advantage and or destroyed them. A dark empath personality is one of the most dangerous of psychopaths, sociopaths, and antisocial because it destroys anyone from within like cancer does to the body. After reading Patpet's comment, I thought of the Phoenix Stone as Katherine behaves with the brothers who set out to destroy them. When I read Newmoon's observation, I felt weird because Patpet and Newmoon came to the same conclusion I did, so I don't think our conclusion about the Phoenix Stone is a coincidence. Those fans who don't like seasons 7 and 8 are because they are only focusing on the romantic aspects of TVD, which is why they miss the point of the story by 80 miles out of 100 or they only see 20% of the story. Season seven is the season that tides all of the other seasons together and provides answers to the previous seasons. For example, did Katherine love Stefan? The answer lies with Caroline. She cares about Stefan's well-being because Caroline knows how important Damon is to Stefan. Caroline is set apart from Katherine, the woman who severed the brothers' bond, and Lexi, who kept the brothers apart because Caroline genuinely cares for Stefan.

Patpet

Caroline at this point is on a "mother mode", thinking about what is the best for Alaric and the kids, no matter her feelings, that are clearly there, Given the circumstance of Jo being killed, she realise that those kids are extra precious to Alaric, are his only chance to restore his happiness and get over the trauma of the loss he had, she. is suppressing her feelings because Alaric feeling gets priority. So all she can do is being Caroline, extra protective, extra control freak, because she doesn't want to over step boundaries and also she hasn't figure out of what those feelings for Alaric's kid means and the implication of it in regards to Stefan.

Patpet

So true. As well, some people don't get how Caroline is perfect for Stefan, how much in common they have, and how Caroline love is a positive influence on him, as much as Elena is for Damon. It's the revers mirror, on how Elena and Caroline brought the brothers together, to Katherine wanting the brothers to be against each other to control them better. Caroline here act as Elena's friend too, in her absence she thinks of what would be best for Damon too, of what Elena would do. Caroline grow up so much after her mother's death, she left behind the petty judgemental Caroline to become a fully caring selfless woman, understanding others feelings around her and giving priority to what is truly important to others, giving priority to the people she loves. In the absence of Elena the writers merged some of the Elena's characteristics into Caroline character, making her the representation of true selfless compassionate love.

Maribel Humble

Oh, I have things to say about Caroline regarding Elena when the time comes in this season. When it comes to Stefan and Caroline, I think of season 2, episode 9, when they were at the grill. I can't help but notice how relaxed Stefan's body posture and smiling face are. The smile lines reach his eyes, indicating that his conversation with Caroline is genuine is a genuine smile because he has lines around his eyes indicating that smile is genuine. I love how Caroline and Stefan are enjoying each other in that scene.
