I have a hard time understanding Lily, too. The closest thing I can come to understanding her is she needs a lifeboat or a getaway car. She needed her new family to get away from her abusive husband, but it meant leaving Stefan and Damon behind. And then, when she fears she's going to leave her new family, she wants to jump back aboard Stefan and Damon's boat.

The problem I have with Lily is that in the past, she might have been abused by Giuseppe, but she took part in abusing her children too, Giuseppe was abusing Damon physically and her psychologically. Damon had to protect his little brother allowing him to have the semi decent childhood he didn't have, because nobody would protect Stefan but him,. Therefore he was taking the blame for everything going on, he was blamed and punishes even for things she did. She used her own child to avoid to hunger Giuseppe, letting him to be abused. You might to be abused too, but YOU are the adult. He was a child and a very young adult at that time and he didn't know any better, he still saw his mother as a mother. But know he is an adult, he can see what she has done to him as a child and as an adult, she abuse him as a child, she left him in charge of Stefan, she never came back to save him, " she toss us aside without any concern to happen to us", she could have come back and kill Giuseppe as a vampire. And lets not forget she tried to kill , Bonnie, Elena , Jo, and that Elena is in a box because she wanted to punish Damon and Bonnie. She is as much manipulative as his companion, because no mother, I can assure you, can be convinced to leave her children behind knowing they are with an abusive person, unless she is just as manipulative cold person that choose "her children" on a base of convenience for her. She let Julian to convince her, no mother forget her own children so easily. Stefan thanks to Damon didn't have the horrible childhood Damon had, he didn't have to listen to Lily telling him to his face how much she doesn't care anymore for them, because Damon put words in her mouth to make Stefan humanity off coming back, believing his mother had an ounce of care, he did have to see how she black mail him with Elena's coffin, and she reminding him how she would let Giuseppe bitting him black and blue and how after that SHE would take his toy away to break him, a 10 years old child. Damon has being abused by her too, and that abuse and that feeling of abandonment cause so many problems to him as an adult. She treated like he is nothing, she broke his heart so many times and so cruelly, she took Elena away from him, the only woman that didn't abused him as Lily and Katherine did. Why should he forgive her? She had to know how much damage she has done to him, how much hurt she caused him. When you cross that limit and abuse your child, you are not anymore a parent, you are just a child abuser, no excuse.

Bacause she is a narcisist and narcisist jump at situations that can be manipulated into adoration. She saw an opportunity with Stefan and jump on it. She didn't try with Damon, still slapped him, keeping abusing him, because he wouldn't submitt, she knew that she has done too many unforgivable things to him, so she use Stefan. She said I am sorry to him only at the very end, using her own death to manipulate Damon into submittion and to feel sorry for her, to die like a happy fulfilled narcissist. I am glad Damon didn't gave her that.

I honestly think Damons last words to Lily were so valid, and I love how Damon sticks to his moral values within his opinions of what Lily did to him and Stefan.

I didn’t really feel sad when Lily died either, it’s just that thing of like…damn she could’ve fixed her relationship with her children if she’d had more time. For the first time since she started her “new life” she finally put her children first so it makes me sad for what could’ve been because her reconciling with Stefan and Damon wouldn’t only be good for her, it would also go a long way in fixing what she broke in Damon. Also kinda sucks that she never got to experience a life without abuse :/
