I just recently hit my $210.00 milestone !  That mean I will release Roll20 asset packs. I released one a little while ago but now my intention is to release one or two a month.

Now my question. I've been thinking about my path to come and a bigger goal for my work. I have seen other creators set a goal after which they release they content for free to the general public, thanks to the generosity and support of their patrons.  What do you think of this? It would mean setting a bigger goal and after that I would give public access to my work.

I must say I'm a little scared that by lifting the pay wall, some people would leave this Patreon account, since it would not be necessary anymore. At the same time I appreciate the other creators who do just that because they are being such nice people, and I believe that's why their supporters and Patrons stay supporting them.

so what's your opinion on this? do you approve or this? Would you take offense on paid content being offered for free? Or any other idea I'm not thinking about.

I wouldn't be bothered by lifting the pay wall, personally.

A thought; can you release the previously created material as a free pack while keeping newer stuff behind the pay wall? Were I in your shoes, I wouldn't want to lift the paywall all-together.

Mickey Kocic

I have limited financial resources and my current commitment on your Patreon is already stretching me, so I'd have to bow out. Please be good enough to let me know in advance what your final decision on this is.

Ultimately it's entirely up to you. Most people here I would imagine support you and give to your patreon not because they want things for themselves only but because they want to support you and see you succeed because they're a fan of your work. I for one fall into that category and would love to see you be able to spread your abilities and product to people who cannot afford it.

Keep the paywall, but you could consolidate multiple maps into a bundle and start selling them separate from Patreon. I've seen most small packs go for $5 on Roll20, and larger packs up into the $15 range. If you needed advertising, or some kind of "free sample", give 2/3 free maps out and stress they are part of a larger 10/15 pack. Your patrons still get first access to new maps via Patreon. If you do succeed on Roll20, maybe start providing Patrons with custom tokens, or some other benefit for continuing to be subscribers. The idea is that you still encourage subscription in some fashion, while expanding the availability of your content, and limiting the amount of extra work you do... a tough thing to juggle.

To be honest the shift to Roll20 would be a reason why I'd bail on patreon, I have zero interest in it, lifting the paywall isn't a problem for me. ALthough why not release map packs through DriveThruRPG for a couple of dollars? Might be worthwhile.

That's an alternative, or something like release stuff from 6 months before or something like that. So Patreon stuff is fresher always,

Thanks for your support Mickey, I know it's not easy. Whatever I decide I would probably set it as a future goal and you guys will be the first to know about it.

What you suggest makes total sense, this idea is not something I'm all convinced of yet. But you as my supporters totally have a say in this decision. And yes that's another option. I already sell some stuff at DMs Guild but have not created something like a map pack for personal use on sale.

Drivethru RPG, how would that work, something like packing all my stuff from let's say january to april. And sell a compilation on Drivethru? My patrons would get stuff always before since the packs would be released some months after Patreon.

I'm supporting you because I like the quality of your product. I'll personally continue to do so regardless. That being said, I agree with people suggesting offering some of your older products, either for free or in some kind of inexpensive bundle.

Rick

Sounds about right. :) And fair and reasonable.

Kevin

Lifting the paywall wouldn't move me to drop my support, but perhaps you could offer the first map per month as a freebie?

elventower

Thanks for your continuing support David. Yes I'm seeing this trend, maybe I could do something like a 2 month's worth of maps, released in bundles periodically. And it would be a few months old so as to keep the Patreon content fresh exclusive.

elventower

Thanks for your support Kevin. This is also a good idea. I've given away some free maps over time, but not as a "monthly" thing.

I think all of your content should eventually be free'ish. I don't think someone ability to donate should preclude them from the great artwork and service that you're providing the community. That being said I think you are correct in seeing that making everything free provides a disincentive to helping you support yourself and future work. I would suggest that you work on a rolling release schedule. Patreons get first access to the 'best' content (no watermarks, best resolution, movable assets, etc). 3-6 months down the road you release it to the general public with a good, but unobtrusive watermark and none of the bells and whistles (a usable resolution for VTT, but not printing; a flat image (no movable assets), etc). Interestingly this should draw MORE traffic to your Patreon as people begin to use your content and want early access to more of it. Whatever you choose I would start taking some metrics now (website hits, downloads, etc) and see what happens. Do you get more traffic? Do you get less? Good luck and thanks for the great work!

I also think that releasing 'packs' wouldn't be a bad idea either. You can release most of your maps that are 3+ months old in a pack and keep a few as Patreon exclusives. A little extra incentive to support you if possible.

I use to get your maps from Reddit for free until I found your site. I thought it was great how passionate and skillful you are and decided to join. I don't know what the best answer is but I will support you whatever your decision is.

I will continue to support you, regardless

I like your maps with the wee PDF, they're great for a quick sidequest when the party starts lagging. Ive no interest in Roll20, I play to get together with my friends, drink booze n eat pizza, your maps make for great nights. Honestly, since Im a tightass, if you opened it up to free access I'd drop out and mooch. Keep up the paywall, its a system thats obviously working for you. Just explore other options.

elventower

Thanks for your support and opinion Kieron. And it's good you tell me the PDF's are useful to you. I've been doing them for a while but I didn't know if people actually found them useful or good.
