A long time ago, the terrible conflict between illithids and gith ended up with a derelict nautiloid crashing into an abandoned location in the material plane. The nautiloid barely survived the forced landing. It entombed itself in the skirts f a large mountain range and was left undiscovered for eons. Only one of the illithids survived by hiding in a hibernation pod. The landing incident damaged the pod and the illithid remains trapped until its conscience found a way to break from the physical bounds of its body and turned into something far more hideous than it was.

This is illustration features a crashed nautiloid and a simple cave complex beside it. The main baddy here is a gibbering mouther which was formerly an illithid. The illustration is included in all variant formats. Please enjoy the art and the written lore in the PDF.

That is pretty cool.

This is awesome! I have a campaign with the group trying to find the power source from a crashed Nautiloid to power a dwarven made portal generator! This is perfect!

So fun fact, if you need this at a higher level, a Roper (MM 261) is a great replacement for a Gibbering Mouther. You can justify the AC for the durability of the hibernation chamber and the tendrils that snake out can just be super-long mouth tentacles (similar to an Ulitharid). Swap the bite damage for psychic, and you've got a nice, medium encounter for a 4 person party at 5th level.

Oh, and I'm working your original illustration and some of the lore into a larger map of a lair that an elder brain built around this crashed ship, hoping to study it and learn how to get it working (or even make more). Thx for the inspiration!

You're welcome Jimmy. Glad you're putting it to good use in your home game. Have Fun!
