Now one dares face the Curse of the Obsidian Idol! (Patreon)

Traveler! In this short fantasy adventure, the adventurers are conscripted by a retired knight who wants to find a way to return his dead son back to life. The knight explains that his son's soul was collected by an evil entity in the Shriveled Forest. He intends to go there to retrieve his son's soul from beyond the veil!

The story is true. There is a strange obsidian idol in the forest depths where countless pilgrims have come throughout the ages to petition the demonic entity for a wish. The entity never grants the wish but always gives the supplicant the tools or the power to achieve their objectives. But they still have to do the work themselves. What's the catch? If they fail to fulfill their goals, their soul becomes entrapped in one of the many obsidian trinkets in the forest.

This is a level 6 encounter about helping a distressed father, fighting demonic apparitions in the cursed forest, and gaining the opportunity to make the ultimate wish to an otherworldly entity. Here's a low-def preview of this illustration:

Here's a close-up of the obsidian statue. It resembles an angel but its face is a hollow pit of utter darkness.

There are two rows of granite plinths west of the statue that hold twelve obsidian trinkets. Within those stones, the deranged souls of countless individuals experience an unending torment at the demon's behest.
