Just started watching, but to the point about this opening feeling like every other post-Game of Thrones prestige TV title sequence – the part of it that most of these shows don’t copy is that they made that to solve a specific story problem. It was a large made-up world with multiple spread out storylines and they didn’t want to have to devote time in the story (or constantly do title cards) to orient the audience. So they made a stylized map that showed all the place names, how far apart they were, etc. AND they updated it every week to reflect where all the characters were in that episode. It was a helpful tool to understand the story better. Wish other shows that were making elaborate ones used it to solve similar problems.

HOTD S1 tried to replicate that, but failed in its execution. They correctly identified that the hardest part of that show was keeping tracking of all the various members of that family and how they are all related. So they made a stylized family tree. But they made it too abstract and far too subtle to be useful for anyone who didn’t already have the family trees memorized. Though I did still appreciate the initial intent.
