I’ve always wondered what happened to Catra’s iconic mask, that object she wore on her head like a crown. Maybe she started wearing it from a young age, perhaps as a trophy, a way to project strength and authority, making herself seem larger and more intimidating than she really felt.

How did she lose it? There's a possibility that Horde Prime stored it in his sinister collection chamber, maybe even destroyed it. What’s certain is that, along with her drastic haircut, Catra loses something much deeper: a key symbol of her identity. The mask, which may have represented her tough and controlling facade, was also a legacy of the Catra from the 1980s, who likewise wore it as a symbol of power.

However, by losing the mask, Catra also sheds that authoritarian facade, allowing her true self to emerge. She reveals someone more vulnerable, more willing to accept help, marking a significant change in her emotional development. The loss of the mask symbolizes the breaking down of her barriers, revealing a person who finally embraces her vulnerability and opens herself up to the support of others.

What do you think? Do you believe it’s symbolic? Or was it simply a practical accessory she wore to keep her hair out of her eyes?

Oh I DEFINITELY think it was symbolic, but I had never thought too hard about that until now. I think you make great points about it, I love this!

Ah, Iria, you summarized my thoughts on this perfectly. The mask had been a symbol for sure, she was hiding her true self behind a facade, displaying someone else, keeping her true self hidden away. So to lose that mask also meant that she needed to change, there was no way to hide anymore. Thanks for showing us your point of view on this and of course for this brilliant artwork!

I’ve always been torn between assuming Prime kept it as his messed up trophy from Etheria (making all his other trophies be less about the grandeur and more about each individual it was take from) and him discarding it (Catra is a small cog in his machine who will serve one purpose, why save that when he could get something else better?). Either way breaks my heart, which this art absolutely does as well!

I like both your theories and they are both heartbreaking! I think knowing how insignificant Catra was made feel during her life, the second option would be worse though

This a beautiful and painful piece of art Iria, fantastic work! I always thought if there had been a follow up to the series, that it would have been great to explore Prime's ship and find out what happened to Catra's mask, and maybe see Catra struggle with it and what it represents from her, because I agree that this mask meant a lot more than just an accessory to her.

Symbolic as hell! ;-) That is why Despara looks so dominant when she takes it from Catra. That scene always gives me chills when I read it. The entire interaction between them is very excellent sexual fun and erotic dominance. It perfect the way Catra feels embarrassed by her own sexual desires for Despara taking whatever she wants. Even Catra's symbol of identity.

When I drew that scene in our Despara AU, I was thinking about that symbolism. Later, I designed Catra with her rebellious hair in a braid, which holds significant meaning: the braid represents how her rebellious nature is being restrained. Despite the emotional abuse she endures from Despara, Catra keeps holding on because she still has hope. Later on, she wears another mask, slightly different, which covers most of her head, symbolizing the growing weight of her inner conflict and the emotional barriers she's building to protect herself from her own pain.

I love that so much! That's a wonderful depth of combined feelings. It's a very powerful erotic tension that continues building. Catra wants to resist, but Despara always has her gorgeous dominating almost unspoken authority. It's beautiful how your drawings visualize Catra's mixed feelings about Despara's "Sexy Bad Girl Bully" driving Catra wild with sexual arousal and need! 😈😈🔥🔥 ;-)
