A couple of days ago I visited a zoo in my city. Last time I've been here was when I was a little girl and I don't remember much. I had a mixed feelings. First I was so happy to see these beautiful creatures in front of my own eyes but then I looked around them and saw people, fences covered in electric wire, lots of concrete and thought they shouldn't live like that. They need much more space. I know most of them were born in captivity and they don't know the real world but still I've seen some sadness in their eyes (especially monkeys, which you can see on the photos).

I'd like to know your opinions about zoos in general. Do you go often? Which photo is your favourite?

Love, Erinthul.

I like the owl and the cheetah. I haven't been to the zoo in years

I did. I hadn't gone since for over a decade at the time and it was nice to see them. Some animals I felt sad about. They didn't want to be there. Nature is complicated. Animals in the wild live such dangerous lives. Constantly living in fear of being hunted, having to worry about food and water and protecting their young. In a zoo, they're safe and their needs are met, but they want freedom. They'll probably live longer in captivity but they don't understand

I like the Owl. It's called the Ural Owl, and is believed to be of the same owl 'family' as the Barred Owl, which I've photographed here in Canada. While there are downsides to any zoo, if the animals are well taken care of they can be a great educational tool for their preservation.

Yeah, I agree. I only wish they had more space but it wasn't that bad at all to be honest

Depends on the zoo. I've seen some animal displays that are very unpleasant. The better and larger zoos tend to support species conservation plans and research. The good zoos also offer education and an opportunity to consider the impact we have on species in the world.

Once I visited Loro Parque in Tenerife. I was very excited, but after I saw the orca show I was heartbroken. :-( They keep those majestic animals there and they looked so sad when they performed. I don't know how much space they have there, but I have the feeling that not too much. So sad.
