Oh boy oh boy guys! Wellllll I did like seeing Sir Connery adorned in feathers, I now really want to visit Scotland but overall this was not my favorite 😬😬 I think maybe I had to be there in 1986 on this one? Still always glad for a cinematic experience though and I'll prob say “there can be only one” a lot!

Thin White Duke

I've never liked this, but I'll give it another try if Cassie's watching

Cole Jennett

Are you hiding your roots with that hat?😉

Jay Davis

There can be only one... good time to watch this. And that is immediately. Right away! NOW!!!

Brian Gentry

Oh God…. Why do you do this to me on a busy week that I swore I wouldn’t watch videos during?!?

djKENTO

HEEEEEEERE WE ARE! BORN TO BE KINGS! WE'RE THE PRINCES OF THE UNIVERSE! Cassie... here's a WILD fact. Christopher Lambert, the guy who plays Connor, TERRIBLE VISION. Profound Myopia it's called. Can't see anything more than like a foot in front of his face. So all these sword fights he really can't see what's happening. It's a miracle nobody got severely hurt making this.

Michael Enos

Yeah... it always seemed to me that the period scenes were always better filmed, acted. The 80s scenes not so much. Especially that idiot cop in interrogation.

William Bryan

Whenever I see or hear of this movie all I can think of is "You have embarked on a sacred mission. You have been chosen ro defend the realm of earth, in a tournament called Mortal Kombat."

Kent

I honestly have never understood why people like this movie. It is just bad, and not in a good way, lol. Even worse knowing that it is the best of the series.

Wesley White

Not your favorite? Shame on you lol kidding 🤣 I'm at work currently so, I'll have to wait until I get home to see this reaction and give you my commentary lol! Sorry I missed your KICK-ASS YT edit reaction, I was gonna remind you my birthday was yesterday and it was somewhat decent lol! Can't wait to watch this tonight, love and support 🥰😁✌️🌹

Zane From Canada

Fun fact: Sean Connery's opening voice-over was recorded in his bathroom. 😁

Chris Retzlaff

WHO WANTS TO LIVE FOREVER!!!

Caomhan84

I didn't think she would like it either. I love Highlander but I saw it in the last couple years, and the the overall '80s music video vibe is just overbearing. Plus Kurgan is.....very.....yeah. The whole thing is '80s. I think the concept gets a much better treatment in the TV series and I think Cassie would appreciate Duncan MacLeod much more. It's just too bad that they were never able to properly capitalize on the concept in terms of movies. The Henry Cavill remake should be interesting... If it ever comes out.

Chris Retzlaff

The soundtrack...the story..the premise....all fantastic with Sean Connery. Nowadays we see movies like this all the time but in 1986....amazing

Godzilla Jones

HOW DARE YOU! Nah, just kidding. It's not for everyone. Mostly a dude movie, mostly a GenX thing. It's weird and convoluted, but it has sword fighting and Clancy Brown and a killer soundtrack by Queen and if you're a boy of a certain age, in a certain time, it hits in a way that makes you love it forever. It's not good, but it is nevertheless *awesome* Fun Fact: Lambert spoke basically no English when make this film. Just French (he's Belgian) I look forward to watching it with you. That said, you should watch Greystoke, The Legend of Tarzan starring Christopher Lambert. He's fantastic as Tarzan and it's a great movie.

Ramzi M. A. Ramzi

The Kurgan did win another prize; he was resurrected as Mr. Krabs. There can be only two! Ahhh, HIGHLANDER (1986). An atmospheric experience like no other. One of two favorite fantasy films from that era. The second is LADYHAWKE (1985). They both burry the needle on the nostalgia scale for me.

Neill Shaughness

This is the rare kind of movie that is inexplicably enjoyable despite being one of the silliest movies of the decade. I couldn't tell you why this movie is so much more beloved than so many other cheesy fantasy and sci Fi films from the era, but something about it just clicked

Ike

I saw this movie once in ‘88-89 and hated it, but my dad loved it. He still does! There was even a TV show spin-off series and I couldn’t get into that either. I’m not commenting to bash it, but if your review said that “you loved it,” I was prepared to give it another chance. (It’s all your fault, Cassie!, jk lol) I hope the fans of this franchise enjoy the reaction 👍

Kent

Sean Connery as an Egyptian with a Scottish accent. Let's just leave it at that. Nostalgia is a helluva drug. I agree the story and premise are fine, but the execution is just not great.

Canadianant

This really is one of those that was better as a VHS rental back in the day but I'll give it a spin again with Cassie.

Ross Warshaw

Cassie, the movie holds a special place in the hearts of us GEN Xers who saw it back in the day, but it's definitely not for everyone. The sequels are also a mixed bag....they go downhill real quick. The TV show is AMAZING though, and there's a big "love" component to the 5 seasons. Filmed in syndication, half of each season is shot in Vancouver, BC and the other half in Paris. The show follows not Connor, but DUNCAN MCLEOD (a distant cousin) through his many journeys, and really has a chance to build on the Highlander Universe in a way that a 2 hr movie just can't. I doubt you'll ever get around to watching it, but that won't stop me from suggesting it. And since it's on TV, less graphic head-choppy-off stuff.

Shawn Kildal

It wasn't for me either. But seemingly those who like it, REALLY like it.

Just Plain Bob

Love this movie and have since I first saw it when it came out on VHS in the late 80s. At the time, it seemed like no one had heard of it except us geeks. It’s really grown in popularity over the years. It’s absurd and has a guy with a Scottish accent playing an Egyptian and a guy with a French accent playing a Scotsman. The rules aren’t explained and thank God for that; having everything explained is so booooooooooooooring. I understand that failing to explain the contest and it’s origin is an impediment to many people’s enjoyment of the film. But not mine. Then again, I also like the theatrical cut of “Donnie Darko” MUCH more than the director’s cut, which spoils half the fun by explaining exactly what’s happening and why. I know this film has as many detractors as supporters and that some will inevitably say that those that love it are seeing it thru nostalgia goggles. Nope. I just think it’s a fun movie. And, if you DON’T like it, that’s fine too. To each his/her own.

Aaron Mann

And to think, this movie beat out Ronin. Even Crocodile Dundee 2 would have been a better choice. I get the 80s nostalgia. I’m a Gen Xer too. But some 80s flicks just don’t hold up well.

Jesse Wilson

Gotta love a movie that casts a Scott to play a spaniard and a spainard to play a scott.

Michael G

Cassie, there are FIVE!!!! Yes five movies in this franchise. I think you are safe from seeing the rest. These grungy looking 80’s movies were Something we will never get back

Uncle Phoenix

No Way. Shut Up. I have to make some popcorn right now.

Steve Mercier

Loved this movie as a kid...less so when I grew up and watched it again. It's just all over the place. Also--Sean Connery, a Scotsman (or, Schotschman), playing a Spaniard/Egyptian, and Christopher Lambert, a Jewish-American Frenchman, playing a Scotsman...I don't know why, but this is both horrible and brilliant. But Clancy Brown as the Kurgan? $%&! yes! Anyway...always thought this was due for a reboot, so glad to hear they're putting one together next year.

Bill Hayden

Being there in 86 wouldn't have helped. This is another teenie bopper movie with a Frenchman who cannot act playing a Scot.

Zachary K. (Verified Swiftie)

I went to Scotland in 2006 took a 10 day tour. Edinburgh, Ft. William, Inverness, Sterling. It was a lot of fun. I think we the best part was seeing William Wallace's 5ft sword. Hitting Scottish pubs, was fun. Of course that was 18 years ago. One of the great things about sending a package. Is when it's actually delivered https://photos.app.goo.gl/ZUgCyv5ujfjWj5Ah9 Then there was this movie. As much I love Sean Connery this was a little too much for me. I am trying to why I gave it a 5. There was all those crappy sequels. Then the series. I think it reminded me a little too much of Big Trouble In Little China. ❤️ and 🙏to you Cassie and Carly & Ben +Family

Mike Lemon

"it hits in a way that makes you love it forever. " But- Who dares to love forever Oh, when love must die?

Mike Lemon

What are you talking about? There are only two- this one and The Final Dimension/The Sorcerer. Only *two*.

Vwlss Nvwls

I saw this in the theater. It was such a great watch, so different than anything else I had seen before. The sequel is not so great, and destroys its own lore. The third one was watchable, but not great. I have never seen the series. I just enjoy this one over and over instead of all the other stuff. :D One thing I remembered I never liked was the love interest between Nash and Brenda. It did not feel necessary, and it pulled me out of the main story.

Above Average Dave

Saw this when I was in my early 20s and thought it was a cool concept but that Lambert was a bad actor and miscast as a Scotsman. Saw it again for the second time during the pandemic and thought it was a so-so concept, that Lambert is an awful actor and miscast as a Scotsman. I mean, how hard was it to find a Scottish actor!? They’re literally everywhere.

LittleGalaxyBoy

This is probably the closest we’ll get to seeing Cassie react to a Queen album on the channel! :D For me, it’s the soundtrack that really makes this film. The overall 80s neon noir vibe? Well, I can just watch The Terminator (1984) for that instead. I do love aspects of this film, The TV series is much better overall.

crazyivan

I'm not surprised Cassie wasn't a fan of this movie, but as a 21 yo when this came out - it's got a spot in my heart...but how can you not love this movie just for Freddie Mercury's voice?! ....."Nuns, they have no sense of humor".......Classic!

Mike Lemon

You didn't have to be there in '86, you had to be a boy in '86 or thereabouts. The movie is terrible but it hits all of a boy's likes- fighting a big bad, sword fighting, protecting and getting the girl, etc. with a story that can easily be adapted into play. I would be very curious to see the analytics on this and the edit- I'm betting it is going to 95%+ male.

Marcos

This movie is not very good; I am not surprised you didn’t like it!

Vwlss Nvwls

I still find it hard to believe that the same guy playing the Kurgan is the same guy who does the voice of Mr. Krabs on Spongebob. :D

Scott Macaulay

It's funny this movie made a mark on pop culture when it is so terrible. I think it rode a neat concept but was poorly executed. Connery and Queen helped. Instead of trying to remake good movies, they should give this one a shot. Next time don't hire a Scotsman to play a Spaniard and a Frenchman to play a Scotsman.

Walter

terrible movie. fantastic idea. Awesome when I was 16. the tv series explores the idea in a pretty good way.

Choof

This was my first time watching it, made it about halfway and yeah, this movie isn't for me haha.

Walter Crockett

As someone that was there in 1986 I have to say Cassie you are right. As a fan of the film, when I rewatched it recently, I realized it has not aged well. Looking forward to your reaction

Aaron Mann

Agreed. Especially given the other choices on the poll at the time. I mean seriously… Highlander?? Wow.

Brian's Dog

Great reaction! You're now in the special club where you get to accuse celebrities and friends that don't seem to age of being Highlanders as an inside joke. Here's looking at you Tom Cruise.

Mike Gallagher

I was 13 when it came out and I just didn't get the hype. Most of my peers loved it and I gave it a try multiple times when it was on cable ad nauseam. But alas, I thought it was terrible. It wasn't like I had really good taste either. I loved plenty of junk movies. Just not this one. LOL

Ryan Geiger

This movie is a lot if you're going into it blind, but the Queen soundtrack can't be beat and we eventually got a really good TV show out of it

Lemurian Jones

But you never asked the most important question: How the hell did this movie get green lit? Bonus question: Who conned Connery into doing this?

djKENTO

Oooo wonder if she’ll realize the villain is Mr Krabs from sponge bob…

Ortizmo2000

I loved it solely for the awesome AF Queen soundtrack. Speaking of which, need to get Flash Gordon on deck ASAP. You will not see a more colorful, over-the-top flick.

Miguel

I was young, so this wasnt on the radar, but when the TV show came out, I really liked that. So when I learned there was a Highlander movie of course I wanted to watch it. Must say, young me was highly disappointed.

My_Cousin_Mose

After many years of hearing of this movie I watched it for the first time about 5 years ago and I was sorely disappointed. I like the idea but the end result is not good. You made it worth watching but I don't think I'll ever watch this one again by choice.

Miguel

If you didnt like this one, cant say I blame you. I didnt like it either. Though the tv show that was made when I was a teenager I remember enjoying. Not sure if that was just terrible teenager taste in entertainment, or if it was actually any good though since I havent watched it since it was initially on tv.

Michael Lynch

And to think she could’ve seen Hidalgo or Crocodile Dundee 2 instead of this. It’s like people don’t know her taste at all

Thomas Thompson

The English Patient based on the award-winning novel

Keith Jones

I do confess to loving this movie, but watching Cassie struggle through some of the plot points I think it is better on the rewatch when you can just sit back and let the music, visuals and scenes wash over you. While I don't remember it well enough, I would bet I had some "what is going on here" moments my first time.

Caomhan84

I saw the TV series first. Duncan Macleod made a very big impression on me as a young boy, because I thought he acted like the ideal man. Cultured, suave, kind, talented but also a badass who had lived through history. It wasn't until later that I saw the original movie on TV. And then I saw it unedited in college with an audience. This was probably 2004... And people were laughing. It's very much a product of its time, and the fact that it had a music video director as the director. To this day I still think the concept is amazing. It's such a shame that they never got their act together with the movie series. The TV series was pretty great for 5 years though.

Just Plain Bob

This is definitely a very visual film. And the music, both Queen and otherwise, is superb. To me, it almost plays like a dream. If I’m not mistaken, the director specialized in music videos before this, and it shows. I remember being VERY confused for the first half of the movie the first time I saw it. But I felt like it paid off nicely.

Bubba Fett

The remake I think will be better flushed out given whose involved. After seeing the original I think we will be able to appreciate. My hope at least. It's always been an interesting watch lots of open questions about the why and how of it. The slund track is honetly the best part. Lambert my understanding was barely learning English when he was cast and his French accent is kinda heavy and struggled some with delivery. The sequels get wierder and I never cared for them. The tv show honestly wasn't half bad for 90s good guy action lol. To quote a line from. Chernobyl, "not great not terrible".

Michael G

Highlander, Highlander II: The Quickening, Highlander III: The Sorcerer, Highlander: Endgame, Highlander: The Source. There is also an animated movie. That is five. A podcast i subscribe to just covered all five of the films on their patreon.

Patrick Flanagan

I enjoy this movie quite a bit, but it's best to stay honest with us and just say when you don't like something. But to be honest on MY part, I probably won't bother watching if I already know you didn't enjoy it.

Joshua s. Jackson

The remake will star Henry Caville as Connor MaCloud.

Matt Rose

word is they're eyeing Michael Fassbender for the bad guy (unclear if it's someone new or The Kurgan).

JarHead0351

The TV show Highlander was great - alot of guess Stars in it too

Carol_White

This is a movie made for teenage boys born in 1970, I just can't understand why Cassie doesn't appreciate this classic of modern cinema.

D. T. Nelson

Only in an 80s movie would you get a French-American playing a Scotsman and a Scotsman playing an Egyptian with a Spanish name. The creator of this movie is lot like George Lucas—good at story concepts, BAD at writing screenplays (especially dialog). The director was also... not great. And yes, the acting was subpar for the most part (but the fault for a lot of that falls on the script and the director). Sean Connery did the best he could with what he was given and Clancy Brown (Shawshank Redemption, Starship Troopers) was great at being terrifying as Kurgan (I hear he even scared Sean Connery). This movie is loved more for what it could have been. Many 80s movies should never be remade. This one begs for a reboot. Give it a professional screenwriter, a great director, a talented cast, and a decent budget... that would be a movie I'd like to see.

John P Tucker

So the reboot of Highlander is set to start filming in the first quarter of next season with Henry Cavill playing the role of Conner McCleod.

David Freese

Cassie haven't watched yet. Getting ready to but did you realize that Krugan was the main corrections officer in Sawshank Redemption? Just thought I'd ask.

Ricardo Rodriguez

Mulcahy was 100 percent a superstar music video director. Including directing the music video for Bonnie Tyler's Total Eclipse of the Heart. His first feature was a stunningly beautiful Creature feature Australian horror film called Razorback. Shot by Academy award winning cinematographer, for Dances with Wolves, Dean Semler. Extremely gifted visually he had a brief career as a Hollywood director culminating with the throwback superhero film The Shadow in 1994. Alas, it didn't get much love from critics or audiences, but it does now have a following for it's visual craft and, at the time, all-star cast. He wouldn't direct a major feature film again until Resident Evil: Extinction. Think of that you will. But at the time of Highlander until The Shadow, he was a promising talent.

Ricardo Rodriguez

For a lot of people the film hasn't aged well and that is TOTALLY understandable. It's utterly bizarre. Super sentimental confession, a few years ago I lost someone I really loved and watched this film several months later. I loved it as a kid and was looking for a sort of nostalgia trip. Long story short, the sequence of Connor saying goodbye to Heather absolutely destroyed me. Between the music by Queen and Michael Kamen and the heartache of the sequence it just allowed me release it all emotionally. So with films, even the weird or silly ones, something in any of them can touch and move you. Apologies for being corny, just felt like sharing that experience I had with this film.

Yaisu

Ah, Highlander. The movie that cast a French actor to play a Scottish character and a Scottish actor to play an Egyptian masquerading as a Spaniard. Such an 80s movie but it didn't really age well. Great concept, terrible execution.

rubberkidney

dont pretend like you could resist when conor mccloud tells you he is immortal. you are but a mere mortal cas. it would instantly be over for you, cut right to extended sex scene.

David Collins

This is like the third or maybe even the fourth time you've not recognized Clancy Brown (Kurgan this time) as the hardass jailor Captain Hadley from "The Shawshank Redemption" - which I find baffling because he has such a distinct voice and plays the complete ahole role as well as it's ever been played. To be fair, while always a jerk, each time they're distinctly different personalities, which is a credit to his acting chops. He does despicable very, very well. You are pretty much spot on, this movie has definitely not aged well. 16 year old me who saw it twice in the theatre was mesmerized. Today me recognizes how poorly it's aged. Doesn't stop the nostalgia though. And nobody can ever take away from you the most culturally important thing you can take away from this movie: There can be only one!

ArsTropica

Highlander is basically a 2 hour music video with some dialogue thrown in. Sadly, it aged like vinegar. Hard to be nostalgic about a movie that’s all about being nostalgic..

Michael Gilbrook

The only good thing about this movie is that it inspired a really good "Highlander" series about *Duncan* McLeod of the Clan McLeod. The series was less cheesy than the movie, and introduced many memorable characters and love interests for our hero. It didn't hurt that Duncan McLeod was generally recognized to be a lot hotter looking than his cousin Connor!

Michael Gilbrook

I noticed that the thumbnail image for this movie doesn't include Cassie. That's happened on occasionally for other movies. Is this intentional? Do you leave Cassie off of the thumbnail when she doesn't like the movie? Or is this just a design decision that has nothing to do with the reaction content?

Clay F

I liked Highlander as a young adult in 1986. I re-watched a few months ago and recognized has not aged the greatest. But I have the nostalgia. Putting on your reaction now. “It's a movie best seen through the hazy amber filter of '80s nostalgia, and if you're watching it without those rose-colored glasses on, God help you.” I was glad that Highlander beat Crocodile Dundee 2 in the poll b/c Crocodile Dundee 2 is worse. Nostalgia can't even save Crocodile Dundee 2. It's that bad. The Killing Fields (1984) was the best movie in the poll, and my favorite, and came in last with the fewest votes. Highlander (1986). IMDb 7.0, RT 69% (audience 79%) --"People hate Highlander because it's cheesy, bombastic, and absurd. And people love it for the same reasons." Crocodile Dundee II (1988). IMDb 5.7, RT single-digit 9% (audience 38%) --"Retelling its predecessor's same joke with diminishing returns, Crocodile Dundee II sees the franchise's enjoyability go down under." "Too slow to constitute an adventure and has too few laughs to be a comedy." The Killing Fields (1984). IMDb 7.8, RT 93% (audience 91%) --"Artfully composed, powerfully acted, and fueled by a powerful blend of anger and empathy, The Killing Fields is a career-defining triumph for director Roland Joffé and a masterpiece of cinema."

rakesh

I rewatched this I think during COVID and I can totally understand that this is a favourite. I loved it as a kid but the rewatch the villain seems corny as hell and it was just very dated. There are some classics that should be remade like RoboCop, but highlander definitely should because they ruined it with a bunch of ridiculous sequels. Now that I think I about it the reason why highlander I think was held in such great esteem was because of the TV series which expanded greatly on the mythology. It was a great series and of course the queen theme tune which was superb. I had a feeling you werent going to enough this and patrons fell for nostalgia bait when voting for this. Hopefully Cavill gets this remade and gets a box office smash.

Walter Crockett

Just watched your reaction. Cassie is completely understand your thoughts on the movie.. I love this film along with all of its flaws because I grew up with it. But I think we all remember this film with higher praise because the sequel was so bad. Highlander II is probably one of the worst sequels ever made. It makes this one Oscar worthy by comparison.

Sahitya

Gave it a go a couple of years ago, I think I turned it off after 30 minutes. To each their own

Biggman83

I saw this in the 90’s for the first time, my dad sat me down to watch it one evening. So I have a lot of memories attached to it. It’s definitely aged, but I guess we all look through it with rose tinted glasses because it came out during a very influential time in our lives. It has a lot of charm and I’m really looking forward to seeing my mate Cavill reboot it (I met him at a friends a few times right before the Man of Steel announcement)

ExploreWinnipeg

I like this movie, but the full director's edition is better. I think you'd like it better because it really extends his story with his young Scottish wife.

Shawn Kildal

I wonder if Cassie watched ER when he was on the show. I can't help but think of Lex Luthor every time I hear his voice.

Shawn Kildal

He also played a Russian in The Hunt for Red October. He didn't sound very Russian to me.

Jacob King

Always found this absolutely unwatchable so good on you for getting through it. Very much a cult film. The same director made two movies I love, The Shadow and Resident Evil: Extinction. Both of which are probably just as awful from an objective standpoint but I saw them at the right age so they resonate with me. No criticism to the fans but loving something is not the same as it being good.

Gábor Árki

Could someone confirm that Cassie reacted to the 116m International (aka Director's) cut of the movie, and not the shorter US theatrical cut? I probably won't bother trying to sync it if it's the latter. Well, "this was not my favorite" might be Cassie’s second-lowest rating for a movie. 😀 And honestly, I’m not that surprised. I wasn't entirely sure but I had a feeling she wouldn’t really like it. What surprises me more is how this film dominated the poll, leaving even some genuinely excellent movies like Ronin or Kiss Kiss Bang Bang far behind. Personally, as someone who first watched it as a teenager in the '90s, I see it as almost a guilty pleasure, but not quite. I’ve always felt the ideas behind the movie were much more intriguing than the somewhat flawed execution, which is only redeemed by Queen’s amazing score.

Hiraoka Toru

The Wind and the Lion needs to be watched on this channel. It has Sean Connery as the most Scottish Berber ever.

Kyle

This is a movie that i dont think is a lot of peoples cup of tea but that everyone wants you to see, just to say you've seen it. Cross it off the list.

Clay F

Surely she watched the theatrical version. I am about to find out.

Gábor Árki

Kyle, just my interpretation, but when she says "this is not my favorite," it usually means she didn’t really like the movie and couldn’t connect with the story. A step down from that are the movies she clearly just endured for the sake of channel, like Full Metal Jacket. Movies I doubt she would have even finished on her own if it weren’t for the channel.

Mike LL

Usually a full reaction video is a picture of the movie poster or some other promotional material. Cassie in the picture is usually the thumbnail for the YouTube edited version. So you will see Cassie in the Highlander picture, maybe with a big thumbs down and a frown on her face! /kidding

Wesley White

Well, despite your opinion, this was a great reaction and I enjoyed watching it! Though it slightly pains me that you didn't like as much as you were hoping, but hey I won't judge you Cassie, it's not for everyone and personally I think it's one of those movies that you would have to watch more than once to really appreciate it! True this movie was a box office flop when it came out but has gained a cult following! Me on the other hand, I love this movie, I grew up watching it when I was a kid, don't worry I was at least 10 when I saw it lol! What drew me in to watching and loving this movie was the sword fighting! As you know Cass, I'm a sucker for sword fights, I just love the sound of clashing steel, gives me chills every time lol! At least there were a few things that you liked about this movie, that being the Scotland scenery, the music by Queen, and of course Sir Sean Connery, so that at least makes me happy lol! Say what you will about Clancy Brown (the Kurgan) but his villainous performance really steals the show for me, I just love his performance as the Kurgan, he kind of reminds of Mark Hamill's Joker from BATMAN MASK OF THE PHANTASM and The Animated Series! He gives off a creepy personality as the Kurgan that makes you slightly terrified, but yet you can't help but love it, at least that's what I compare it too lol! Fun story, back in 2016 when HIGHLANDER was celebrating it's 30th anniversary, the knife company United Cutlery (who also makes replicas from LOTR & The Hobbit) sold replicas of the both Conner's samurai katana and the Kurgan sword, and I got to hold them in my hands, man I wish I bought them when I had the chance lol! Let me tell ya though, that Kurgan sword was a beast, mainly because it was a lot heavier than it looked, but it was a beautiful piece of craftsmanship! Who knows, maybe in 2026 they might re-release them again for the 40th anniversary and I'll finally get my hands on one lol! To kinda help shed some light for you about the lore of this movie, basically the "immortals"! Now mind you this is my own speculation after so many years of watching this movie and what I'm able to piece together so apologies to anyone out there who knows more or better than me lol! The way I see it, certain individuals throughout the world and time are possibly chosen by other forces to be born immortal, or possibly those who are chosen to be immortal are infused with ancient immortal spirits taking on a vessel to live (hence possibly those freaky demonic spirits you saw when Conner vanquished the Kurgan) again speculation! Once an immortal eventually discovers their power through battle (possibly) they then harness their power and abilities to use for either good or evil! When an immortal encounters another, they must then fight to the death and gain their power, hence why the decapitated body glows and the other who did the beheading looks like their feeling a surge of power in their body! The only way an immortal can truly die is by decapitation as you saw throughout the movie, and hence why fighting with swords is the only way to do so! Throughout time, immortals will keep fighting and dying until only a few remain, hence why they call it "the gathering", and an immortals salvation or "safe zone" if you will is Holy Ground (i.e. a church)! It is strictly forbbiden for any immortals to fight on Holy Ground, what happens if they do, who knows! Until only one remains standing and depending on which side they stand on, good or evil, will then gain the prize! As for the prize from what I speculate at the end of the movie, "Immense Knowledge" hence why Conner's able to read the thoughts of others, plus of course becoming mortal and can love, live, have children, and grow old! So, that's basically what I've been able to speculate, and I hope it makes a bit more sense to you lol😁👍 Anyway, though it's slightly unfortunate that you didn't like this movie as much as you were hoping, at least you were able to appreciate it and pin point certain elements that you did like about this movie, and that's more than enough for me to smile! Regardless, great reaction Cassie, I enjoyed it alot! Love and support always, you and Carly are the best! Thank you so much for the Birthday wishes, you're a sweetheart! Hope you and the family are doing okay, God bless y'all and......."THERE CAN BE ONLY ONE!" LOL🤣 so iconic lol 🥰😇🙏🤗😁😉✌👍🌹

Kyle

Oh yeah for sure. But thinking on it, i thought Bram Stoker's Dracula would be at the bottom of the list, i completely forgot about Full Metal Jacket.

Kyle

Really dont like movies where woman are r*ped so someone else can avenge them. Does that even go anywhere? Rather watch the person the bad thing actually happened to, get revenge. That’s like Theon and Sansa type writing.

Mike Lemon

As someone who has seen them all, including The Search for Vengeance (2007), let me reiterate- only *two*.

Gábor Árki

Clay, I dug a little deeper, and I'm fairly confident now she reacted to the International cut, also known as the Director's cut today. From what I found, there were at least three different versions of this movie. The U.S. theatrical cut was around 111 minutes long and, among other changes, didn't include the WWII scene with Rachel, but it seems this hasn’t been available since the VHS days. There was another Director's Cut in the U.S. released during the 90s that restored most of the International version, but not entirely, and also included updated CGI effects and a new sound mix. And there is the International theatrical cut which is 116 minutes long, and today it’s often referred to as THE Director's Cut. It seems this is pretty much the only version available on Blu-ray and digitally worldwide nowadays.

Gabor, I am no expert on the versions of Highlander (1986), so I defer to you. The two versions on Amazon Prime Video that I have (previously purchased) are: [1] "Highlander: The Movie" (run time 1h 51min). Bought this digital first a while back for I believe $4.99. I was thinking this was the theatrical version? [2] "Highlander (4K)" (run time 1h 56min). I think this is the director's cut? I bought this digital later b/c Jen Murray reacted to this version earlier this year. In Cassie's intro, she said she is reacting to "Highlander: The Movie" so I put that version [1] on and synced perfect with her reaction.

Clay F

Sean Connery is a highlight of the movie. He has such a presence. I think trench coats were fairly common in the mid-1980s -- worn with suits, slacks, or blue jeans. The year 1536 was synonymous with superstition. James Cosmo (played Angus MacLeod who was better than Dugal and saved Conner MacLeod) was Campbell in Braveheart. If you recall, Campell in Braveheart was the old guy who had his hand cut off in battle and was the father of the big red-headed guy Hamish (Brendan Gleeson). As others have mentioned, Clancy Brown (played the evil guy "The Kurgan") was the evil prison guard in The Shawshank Redemption. I was 23 when this movie was released and liked it. I liked the history and concept, but not necessarily the implementation. The less-than-stellar moments of dialogue/acting were a distraction that I accepted more back then than now. It is hard for most outside the cult to enjoy the movie because of the cheese and dated aspects. I understand b/c the movie is now harder for me to watch. I am selective on 80's movies. For instance, I don't like The Lost Boys (1987) but think The Terminator (1984) and Glory (1989) are excellent. Back in the day, I always thought that Connor MacLeod has some kind of Eastern European accent (plainly not a Scottish accent). I later learned that Christopher Lambert (played Conner Macleod) is French-American raised in Switzerland until his teens and then moved with his family to Paris. Interestingly, Christopher Lambert was married to Diane Lane 1988-1994 and they have a daughter.

I'm no expert, just did some googling and went through a few Reddit and forum threads and made my assumptions based on that. Although the threads are several years old, they all pretty much confirmed the same thing: there was a US only theatrical cut of the movie with a 1h 51m runtime but that version has never been released on Blu-ray and probably DVD either. This I could confirm myself as all the HD and 4K physical releases I found seem to contain only the 1h 56m cut. Also, all the digital versions I could check from my region (and even the "open market") are also the 1h 56m version. But if you say there’s a 1h 51m version streaming now, that would be indeed the original US-only theatrical cut, which is then only available digitally and only in the USA. If it matches the reaction, then Cassie did indeed watch that version.

Keith Jones

George Washington and 999,999 of his clones did, and at 1980’s value 😬

Dean Holt

I’ll be watching this later today, but it not surprise me you didn’t get on with it. It is a bit of a lads movie and I it’s helps if you have nostalgia for it. I’m also willing to bet you really hated Clancy Brown as Kurgan, for me he has some of the best parts including a few of his lines he has I just found to be really funny. But again I think that’s why it’s a bit of a lads movie with a bit of immature humour, but I think it’s one that might do quite well for you on the YouTube views.

Doug Fisher

It isn't about that Kyle, it is about Kurgan taking everything away from Connor... his village, his home, his woman's virtue and innocence, and his only friend Ramirez. Setting him on a path of isolation not revenge. Besides, Cass loves Outlander and it happened in that show. Good or bad it is a part of life, especially in those times.

Doug Fisher

Great film! It has one of the best and most iconic villains in Clancy Brown's Kurgan, Sean Connery, and a KILLER soundtrack!

Mojo One Thousand

I agree with you Gabor about "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang" and "Ronin", I actually chose both of those and "My Fair Lady" in the poll. "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang" will probably get another chance at Christmas, any others will have to wait unfortunately.

Mojo One Thousand

And an American playing a Russian Clancy Brown's "Kurgen" is meant to be of Russian heritage, at least that is what "Ramirez" tells "Macleod".

Mojo One Thousand

They are giving this one a shot at a remake, Henry Cavill is involved so his nerd credentials and ability may do a halfway decent job with the concept, compared with this movie. Also, Connery wasn't a Spaniard, he was Egyptian, he was just using a Spanish identity when he met "Connor Macleod".

Mojo One Thousand

Clancy Brown is American playing someone of Russian heritage at at time when the US didn't exist. They are at least consistent with their inconsistency.

Alex Gorell

I think full metal Jacket or Pulp Fiction are her least favorites. She’s also hated Batman 1989, so much so she didn’t even hold the reaction to YouTube.

Mojo One Thousand

"Commando" would be my pick for and 80s movie that is "so bad it's good" and I find it more re-watchable than "Highlander".

Alex Gorell

I’ve watched about 30 minutes of this movie then shut it off. 🗑️ movie I’m impressed you made it all the way through it.

Jeff Vargas

I think this is a movie you need to ruminate over to appreciate it over time...seeing it in the movie theater back in the 80's was an eye opener for sure...with the Queen Soundtrack ...it took some time to fully digest how awesome that movie was back in the day especially when special effects were at its infancy

Mojo One Thousand

i am guessing that is a "bad hair hat" Cassie? I know them well.. every hat I own and wear is one of those. This reaction was expected. Everyone seems to watch this with nostalgia goggles on. I enjoyed it the first couple of times I saw it, but I was a kid an it had sword fights. It also had Sean Connery, who I was aware even at a young age, because of my folks who are fans of him and "Bond". Then the couple of times I have watched it as an adult it just hasn't worked the same way. Everyone talks about the Queen songs, which is fair, but the thing I take away most from this movie was that it introduced me to the work of Clancy Brown. There some other movies on that poll I would have preferred over this, but hopefully we will get to them one day. And this wouldn't even be the top of my 80s "so bad it's good list", my carry over champ that has that honour is Arnie's "Commando".

Above Average Dave

Agreed. Clancy Brown was the only one who seemed to fit his casting. And we'll ignore all the holes in the script.

Scott Macaulay

1) cool 2) don’t care. the point was he was not paying a Scotsman in a movie set in Scotland.

Odd Thomas

I think you meant to say 'GREATEST MOVIE EVER MADE'

JC762

My memory is that this was a low budget b movie when it was made. I’m curious to see how it has aged. I remember liking the concept, visuals, and story and music. Lambert’s acting is what it is 😬 ……

JAKH

Cassie might enjoy the TV series (and its spin-off "The Raven") better than the movie. They had a lot more time to develop the backstory, plus period costume flashbacks in every episode.

Maya & Gareth

You should definitely come to Scotland, ya could do a wee meet up :)

Chris Retzlaff

Don't let this discourage you from Highlander, the first movie is a bit dated. Lamberts acting....hilarious, especially with his head turns, they're so quick and random. But the music, cinematography, and story is absolutely fantastic. Some might say they're aliens....I do not. So this isn't a sequel kind of movie...the second one is the worst movie ever made.

Chris Retzlaff

Man, I can not wait for Henry Cavill to be the Highlander.....I hope they do some great things with the music too.

Stephen Dias

Yes, part of the love for this movie is: "you had to be there." After "Excalibur (1981)" came out, there were a ton of sword and sorcery movies. Many of them were awful. This is one of the better ones, IMO. The sequels were horrible and I never saw the point of the series, so for me, this is the only "Highlander." I may or may not see the remake.

Chris Retzlaff

Hoping the reboot with Cavill and Stahelski can turn this Movie franchise into a major IP again

Stephen Dias

Yeah, I meant to mention regarding Christopher Lambert: born in the US, but raised mostly in Switzerland and France. Clearly not a Scottish accent. Then, there's Sean Connery.. Whenever I hear him say, "I'm not Spanish; I'm Egyptian," I think: "with a Scottish accent." Gotta love Connery!

Mike Lemon

"the second one is the worst movie ever made" You have obviously never seen The Nail Gun Massacre (1985).

Chris Retzlaff

I have not, but I'll look it. Obviously my statement is a bit exaggerated, but when they fundamentally change a movie in a special edition you know that it was not "originally" good

MotoDork

I guess I won't be able to watch this since it is apparently not the director's cut.

MotoDork

Some people in the comments are saying she should consider doing the director's cut, so I'm guessing it's the inferior theatrical cut.

ArsTropica

Dear Highlander fans, In every movie is a point of no regret: a make or break moment where the viewer decides how much they want to invest in the rest of the film. Sadly... I think that we lost Cassie at the first decapitation... 😁.

ArsTropica

Cavill is not a small dude. They better get someone like Júlíus Björnsson to play the Kurgan.

Caomhan84

The point of the TV series was obviously to explore the concept more, which I think it did quite well. The TV series shows how Duncan MacLeod changes from uncouth Highland warrior to suave, cultured 20th century gentleman-scholar through the 400 years of his life. It explores what being immortal is ABOUT. You make friends, you lose people you love, when you die you have to move countries for at least two generations. It is possible to have friendships that last hundreds of years.... But it's very difficult to love. It also shows that you can never grow complacent, because someone is always hunting for your head. So it's a hard life, and it's survival of the fittest, but if you're good with the sword, you can live long and do all sorts of things. For 5 years, the TV series was absolutely excellent. But we don't talk about season 6. 😂

Steve Holton

The version Cassie watched has the restored World War 2 scenes which were not in the theatrical release. It is the same version that is available to stream for free if you have Amazon Prime in the U.S.

Mike Lemon

Her reaction is 1:53 minutes long, it's a directors cut. Plus the one she watches clearly says "Studio Canal", again making it a directors cut. Second plus, it has the WW2 scene.

Stephen Dias

No, when I say that I didn't see the point of the series, I meant, "there can be only one," but it wasn't him (Duncan MacLeod), so why bother? Although, as you say, a look at the lives of other immortals might be interesting. I guess it's like how I enjoyed the short-lived series "Powerless": normal people living in the DC Comics universe. Maybe I should give the show a second chance.

Mike Lemon

Frankly, I wouldn't bother. It is available on the high seas (don't buy it on VHS like I did), but I would just watch the Red Letter review of it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I1dxYbL-t5c

Caomhan84

I rewatched the show every couple years. It's been free on YouTube for like 15 years. I don't even know how that happened but It is. The only real problem is that because it's a '90s show, it has "immortal of the week" for a while before the writers start to explore concepts and get into story arcs. The remake should actually be very interesting, because it will carry on what the TV series was trying to play with in the mid '90s.... Immortals being watched and recorded. That's even more of an issue in the 2020s, with everyone carrying around a camera in their pocket. So I hope the Henry Cavill movie actually comes out because they have to address that. You can't have sword fights in the middle of the street in 2024. In 1994 someone might have a camcorder. But in 2024 everyone has a camera. People can track you on the internet. It won't just be a secret of society of "watchers" Like on the TV show. It's everyone. So I hope the new movie addresses that somehow.

MotoDork

Thank you for the clarification I really wanted to watch along with my directors cut laserdisc.

mattosh79

With all the great action and choreographed sword and fights scenes today this hasn't aged well. I bet in the day it was great. A lot of unnecessary moves which Cassie picked up on straight away in the parking lot fight.

Matthew Gibson

I concur. The TV show is what made me want to watch the movie. It’s like Buffy The Vampire Slayer in that they took a cooky/campy film with a somewhat interesting premise and expanded it to several seasons of fantastic fantasy television.

Author Travis Adams Irish

Ah, man, this movie is what my sister and I watched before she passed away... Just kidding, my sister is alive and I don't like the movie. Bought her a LifeStraw tumbler for her birthday. There can be only one!

Clay F

It did seem like she decided in the first few minutes that she was not going to like the movie, and viewed the rest of the movie through that lens. The confusing plot aspects (for a first-time viewer) and the cheese (especially for one w/o nostalgia) start flowing early in the movie.

ArsTropica

Apparently, Widen’s original manuscript was “darker” than the screenplay. What could be darker than chopping off heads?!!

Yaisu

Clancy Brown was the best thing in the movie, imo.

John P Tucker

Yeah it was produced by Canon Group which was known for making over the top action movies. The remake which starts filming early next year with Henry Cavill should be a better film.

Kyle

That’s still a female character being raped as motivation for other characters. It’s Theon and Sansa all over again. It’s not about it having rape, it’s about how it’s used.

Michael Enos

Please tell us your watching ST: Generations soon. 😀😀😀

Dryfesands

Speaking as a Scot I can authoritatively sat that Christopher Lambert's Scots accent is the absolute worst in a long line of very bad Scots accents in Cinema

BibbitduBois

I think it's hilarious that Sean Connery played a major role in a Scottish-centric movie where is permanent accent actually fits, and even then he didn't get to play a Scottish role.

Bert Towle

Our poor kernel wrangler looked to me like a lady on a really bad date who was trying so hard to be polite and not let anyone know how she felt. I saw this film on cable in a hotel while I was on a consulting gig in the late '80s. Even then it was so awful I bought 2 bottles from the room's mini bar.

Paul Browne

Sorry to hear you didn't like it so much, I will watch anyway, as I love this movie, and I'm overdue a watch of it. ... Giving your honest opinions on movies is one of the reasons why I think of you as the best reactor. Although there is a slight pain, similar to when you recommend a movie to a friend and they report back that they hated it....!

Michael J Paulus

Okay, she didn't like it. There's an upside, since there can be only one, we don't have to expend any effort to talk her out of watching the abysmal sequels.

Kyle

I dont think that at all, i think the movie gave her plenty of times and chances to not like it.

Luke Godfrey

I’d forgot how low budget this movie looks. Not surprised Cassie didn’t like it. Safe to say she won’t be watching Highlander 2. P.s. Am I the only one who wants to watch Mortal Kombat now?

Christopher B.

I was laughing during your outro to this, Cassie. With how carefully you were articulating your thoughts during it, I just imagined you were thinking, "some people lost their darn minds when Carly and I didn't like Batman, so I'll be diplomatic about this". 😂 FYI: it very much is a "cult classic", and I think it mostly appeals to guys of a certain age/generation from where when we were younger, imagining yourself as some badass sword fighter was maybe the coolest thing there was to imagine. The fantastic Queen soundtrack didn't hurt, either.

Eddie Perkins

I watched this when it came out. I didn't remember liking it, so I watched it again after everyone talked about how good it was. I thought I missed something. I didn't miss anything; I don't like it. But Clancy Brown is a good villain. He was also great as the guard in The Shawshank Redemption, and I also liked him in Shoot to Kill (1988).

Eddie Perkins

I agree. It's been up for two weeks, to my knowledge, and I finally watched it. And it was even worse than I remembered. But I do love the band Queen.
