OH boy! It sure does not pretend to be anything other than what it is, completely ridiculous and weirdly hilarious. Dr. Evil was even better in this one although I could have done without FB! They seriously packed some kind of joke into almost every line and I'll just never get over some of Austin Powers facial expressions hahaha

[Full Reaction] Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me (1999)

Comments

Philip G.

FB? Say his full name Cassie 😂

Diiirk706

Fat Bastard is phenomenal. Get a sense of humour.

Gray

That's my evening sorted then Groovy !

Stick Figure Studios

Though it does have several moments of outright hilarity, I personally think this is the weakest of the three Austin Powers movies. Just a little too crude and gross for me (the third one GOLDMEMBER is, for my money, much better; definitely consider reacting to it). Still, I think I'll enjoy watching you watch it. :-)

Stick Figure Studios

P.S. "They made chess sexual." Wouldn't expect you to know this, but that very suggestive chess game is actually a parody of a similar scene in THE THOMAS CROWN AFFAIR (the original 1968 one with Steve McQueen and Faye Dunaway, not the 1999 remake with Pierce Brosnan and Rene Russo).

Clarence Newman

Ahhhh, the legend that is Steve McQueen. Let's put a pin in that one, shall we? We shall return later.

Philip G.

She just doesn't like saying naughty words haha. I watched this as a kid when it came out and we also didn't call him his actual name because it was a curse word

Clarence Newman

I am disgusted that Cassie forgot A Shot In The Dark when she was listing all the 2's in her intro. Disgusted, I tell you! I am very happy, though, that she now pronounces "Rambo" correctly. In the intro to First Blood, she insisted on calling him "Rah-mbo" and that offended me deeply. No one puts Rambo in a tutu!

justin swan

Lmao i just have to say me and my sister and and her boyfriend and my nephews all looked at your reaction to F.B in bed with Felicity Shagwell and we all laughed at your expression lmao XD

Brent Petty

Dr. Evil's possessed chair is a lot funnier if you've seen The Exorcist. Just saying...

Ryan Towell

The zip it scene brings back good memories, used to do that with my kids. Maybe I should start doing it with my grandkids now.. ha I remember showing this to my dad when it came out on blue ray and he was tears at the tent/shadow scene. :) You have to watch part 3, Dr Evil is even funnier in 3.

Vwlss Nvwls

You never knew you needed Dr. Evil rapping, did you? : D You are going to love the next one, especially the opening sequence. :)

Clay F

Yep, that is the real Jerry Springer. This is my first watch (except for a clip or two). I liked it. Hilarious. "Which is it baby, Spitz or Swallows?" Mike Meyers is funny (I liked him on SNL). Good music. I think the two most difficult scenes to watch were (1) Felicity placing the tracker on Fat Bastard and (2) Austin Powers drinking the shit coffee. I recognized the girl playing the sensual chess right away from the TV series "3rd Rock From the Sun." Did you notice that Tim Robbins ["Andy" in The Shawshank Redemption (1994) and "Nuke" in Bull Durham (1988)] is the US President? Felicity Shagwell ("Shagwell" by name, "Shag-very-well" by reputation) is portrayed by Heather Graham who was also in "The Hangover" (2009) and "Boogie Nights" (1997), among other movies.

Justtired

Goldmember is worth watching. The opening sequence and the cameos you will really enjoy.

Shane Drum

I remember when this first came out at the movies, Star Wars ep 2 was due to come out at the same time, and one of the clever promos they used for this movie was what looked like some foreboding, empire-style scenes and music with the camera closing in from behind on a figure breathing heavily and then spun around at the last second and it was Dr Evil lol....I was totally expecting and excited for new Star Wars footage and instead got a funny preview to a very funny movie

Patrick Flanagan

A bit of historical context for new watchers: this movie came out in June 1999, just a few weeks after the premiere of EPISODE I: THE PHANTOM MENACE (in fact Austin knocked PHANTOM out of the number 1 spot at North American box office). We had all spent at least a solid year being bombarded by "STAR WARS is coming back!!!" in the media, which is why there are so many STAR WARS jokes here. Also, APOLLO 13 was a pretty recent movie at the time and the scene showing Austin and Felicity rocketing to the moon recycles footage from the movie showing the rocket liftoff and stage separation. Although, since it was 1969, they rode on Apollo 11, not 13. Second although, since earlier in the movie they establish that Austin travelled to May 27, 1969, and Apollo 11 was launched on July 16, 1969, the movie must have taken place over a much longer length of time than it seemed. Third although, Basil Exposition did tell us not to worry about these things so I suppose it doesn't matter. (I'm still bothered by 1990s Woody Harrelson being in 1969) Ivana Humpalot was played by Kristen Johnson, who was starring at the time on the sitcom 3RD ROCK FROM THE SUN. The President was played by Tim Robbins, who also played Andy Dufresne in THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION - which, at the time this movie was released, was just beginning to become every dad's favorite movie. That was also the real Jerry Springer playing himself; this was probably juuuuust after he had peaked in popular culture, having starred in RINGMASTER, a movie about Fake Jerry Springer, in late 1998. There was a nice touch showing the older Number Two with a slight burn scar on his face, since last we saw of him Dr. Evil had dropped him through a trap door and apparently incinerated him.

[Exhaling and panting from laughter] OMG!!!! Cassie, thank you thank you so much for the laughs, I totally needed this after such a long hard week of working my tail off! I voted for this in your poll and I'm so glad it won, I've been looking forward to you reacting to this since the first one, and OMG, I couldn't breathe! Not only at how funny this movie is, but your reactions to every gag and joke, I was dying of laughter🤣🤣🤣 I'm really glad you enjoyed this movie despite some of its raunchiness! Believe me Cass, there were a few scenes where I felt the same way you did, sorry to bring it up, but that scene with FB in bed, yeah it did gross me out as well! I think I laughed harder at this reaction than I did to your reaction to the first one lol! However, I think this moment in the movie made me laugh the hardest, the scene when Austin is pooring FB's sample in his coffee cup: Cassie: "No! Frick! {gasp} I can't handle this crap [blah]" Me: "LMHO (Laughing My Head Off) 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣" That was the funniest perfect timing for choice of words in that scene, I was busting a gut! Some trivia for you, though I'm sure a lot of people have already said the same stuff, but oh well! All the STAR WARS jokes were all because of the hype of the upcoming release of STAR WARS Episode I - The Phantom Menace back in 1999, even the teaser trailer for this movie pokes fun at STAR WARS lol! The scene when Austin is in the car with Felicity and he says the line "You know what's remarkable? Is how much England looks in no way like Southern California!" That was completely ad libbed because on that highway they were driving on was filmed in California, I forget which one exactly, and if you listen closely, Heather Graham who plays Felicity is trying not to laugh! Speaking of which, it was this movie that made me a fan of Heather Graham, she was so incredibly beautiful in this movie, I had a GIGANTIC crush on her, and she's still gorgeous to this day, she's among the many Hollywood crushes I have, and I've recently been lucky enough to meet 2 of them in person lol! The one scene where Austin photoshoots the two models, the one with the blonde hair (Rebecca Romijn) she was the OG Mystique in the first three X-MEN films before Jen Law (yuk) took over! My final thoughts, I'm just glad you enjoyed this one as much as the first, I can't wait for you to finally and eventually finish it when you get to the third one, personally the third one is my favorite! Without spoilers, I cannot wait to see the look on your face when you see the opening of the third one, it's going to be priceless, and I can promise you that the third one is way less raunchy than this one! As crude and ridiculous as these movies may be, they have a special place in my heart because my recently passed Father and I would always watch these together! I've seen all three movies so many times that, and I kid you not Cassie, and this is why I call myself "moviefanatic" on YT! I've got all three memorized word for word and I can do really good impersonations of Austin, Dr. Evil, and FB (and the new villain in the third one which I will not spoil, you will be introduced to someday) lol! I really wish I could show you my impersonations, you'd be laughing hysterically! Love and support, thank you so much for the laughs, you (and Carly) are the best, have a great week, see you next time, can't wait for you to finish this franchise, and God bless you and the family🥰😇🙏🤗😁😉✌👍🌹

Mike Gallagher

If memory serves there were ads for this that said something like "If you only see one movie this year, make sure it is Star Wars. But if you see two..." LOL

Dan M

If there’s one thing that Mike Meyers does really well is “completely ridiculous and weirdly hilarious”. But you have to give credit where credit is due… he is very clever and imaginative. I was willing to bet the farm that you would have an issue with FB. This is the kind of movie that you watch when you’re having a bad day or you’re depressed and you just need to laugh. If you can get around some of the more bawdy scenes, this movie is just fun. Can’t wait to see your reactions during the opening credits scene. Hope you go on to watch Austin Powers in Goldmember, if for nothing else, just to see the opening scene.

James UK

This is probably my least favourite of the three but it still contains some brilliantly entertaining nonsense.

Mojo One Thousand

Australia agrees with your "arguable" comment Cassie regarding "Number 2's" comment about the quality of Starbucks... their first attempt at selling in Australia was quite the failure. I don't drink coffee, but many Australians take their coffee seriously and we have quite the coffee culture. Pretty sure Rob Lowe got the part because of his real life impersonation of Robert Wagner, the older "Number 2". Mike Myers got him to do it for a full movie, they worked together previously on "Wayne's World". Probably the most niche joke in this movie is the "moon unit zappa" comment. It's a throw away line unless you know it is the actual name of musician Frank Zappa's daughter.

Joe

We need the Bullitt reaction. All the coolness that is Steve McQueen will probably be completely lost on Cassie (haha).

Clarence Newman

I don't think so, Joe. She's already had a light dusting of it from The Great Escape and The Magnificent Seven. After Bullitt, she will need to air out the entire house.

MertzRocks

...and featured vocalist in his song 'Valley Girl', his only US top 40 hit (Dancin' Fool only got to 45 lol but I must have heard it on the radio a thousand times to hearing Valley Girl on the radio a handful of times).

David Freese

Actually I thought she got the coolness of Steve McQueen when she watched Great Escape and the way he was nonchalant about everything in that movie.

Mike LL

I remember when this movie came out how amazing it was that it made more money in the U.S. in the opening weekend than the first movie made in the U.S. in its entire theatrical run. A whole lot of people had seen the first movie on cable and VHS. Very good reaction. It's fun to see Cassie watch so many fun movies after the horror of Not Too Scary season. And add me to the chorus of "Cassie just HAS to react to the third Ausin Powers movie"!

Uncle Phoenix

I was really hoping that Cassie would love these movies because I heard Mike Myers say in an interview that all his material comes from trying to be a good husband and entertain his wife at night during bath time. (Dude, likes baths. ) Just checked and apparently Mike Myers divorced that wife. So I guess Cass wasn’t the only one who wasn’t a fan of FB.

V M

Goldmember was the best one. Funny movie

V M

Goldmember soon please

Odd Thomas

Another good Mike Myers film is The Cat in the Hat

Dave

It's ALWAYS good to hear Cassie laughing. Great reaction.

Gábor Árki

After finishing this reaction, I think I feel similarly about this movie. The first one was fantastic. Clever, fresh, and funny from start to finish. But the sequels have been more of a mixed bag for me. While they still have hilarious moments, there's also a fair amount of crude and toilet humor that I could do without. Honestly, I wouldn't miss Fat Bastard and I'd have preferred ten more minutes of witty name-calling instead. Also, this entry in particular, always felt more like a series of comedy skits than a cohesive movie to me. But this reaction put a smile on my face, which was a welcome change after a week of bad mood and anxiety. BTW, how about another sequels poll in the not too distant future, but specifically for 3rd installments? Austin Powers 3, The World's End (Cornetto Trilogy #3), Superman 3, Superman Returns (which is also a sequel of the 2nd movie), Alien 3 (but Assembly cut, not the theatrical), Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines, The Matrix Revolutions

Gábor Árki

Rob Lowe already had a part in the first movie, he was in the bachelor party of John Smith, the henchman decapitated by the mutated sea bass. Although I think that scene in not in the US cut, only present in the international cut: https://youtu.be/hD3w_VdTG30

Stick Figure Studios

The whole "series of skits as opposed to an actual story" aspect of it becomes particularly prominent in the second half.

Chris Retzlaff

I really liked the soundtrack to this one, Lenny Kravitz American Woman was everywhere. I just realized the henchmen at Austin's Pad is Kevin Durand!! That's crazy

Bryan Erickson

She’s watching Grumpier Old Men anyway? YEEESSSSSS Cassie! “You have chosen wisely”

Scott Macaulay

I was dating a British gal when this came out. I thought it might expand my enjoyment of it because she would see jokes I might miss as an American. Turns out the humor is pretty broad and I didn't miss a thing. I felt more silly thinking there was a deeper meaning to FB.

David Freese

I just noticed a comment about FB but not mini Me

Luke Godfrey

I'm so happy Cassie enjoyed this one. Means there's a good chance she'll watch the third movie, 'Austin Powers in Goldmember', to complete the set. 🤞🏻

Tom Furze

I understand your reaction Cassie. When my wife and I saw this in the theater, during the "it's a bit nutty" scene, she had to run out of the room and run to the bathroom making a vomiting sounds all the way out. If I just play the clip, I get a thwack to the back of my head.

Gray

Really enjoyable reaction, the third film is also pretty fun too hopefully It scores highly on the threequel poll that will no doubt be coming sometime in the future.

Larry Darrell

This was a Ton of Fun. We ought to have more straight up comedies more often. ICYDK, James Bond is not the only source of the Spoofs and Parodies. Other sources are… Films like Our Man Flint (1966) and its sequel, In Like Flint (1967), which was the “Mooovie” Austin began watching after, you knowing, Vanessa. It’s Austin’s favorite movie and it is a real movie. They both star James Coburn, as the title character, who you’ve seen in Maverick (1994) as the Commodore, and in The Great Escape (1963) as the “Manufacturer,” Sedgwick. When Austin Powers plays the role of a photographer, he is channeling David Hemmings’ character in the film, Blow-Up (1966), by filmmaker Michelangelo Antonioni. This is a terrific Mystery Thriller, which I Highly Recommend. The “Sexy” Chess match’s origin, can be seen in the Sexy Crime Thriller… The Thomas Crown Affair (1968), starring Steve McQueen and Faye Dunaway. Also, Highly Recommended. and If there’s an origin of Mini-Me, I think the most likely place would be, The Island of Dr. Moreau (1996), starring Marlon Brando and Val Kilmer. There’s a scene in this film which is similar to the piano scene with Dr. Evil, only a bit… “weirder” :-) perhaps other folks might recommend this film for a future October ;-) — When Heather Graham’s, Felicity Shagwell character is introduced in the film, one of the coolest American Rock songs is playing and it kind of becomes her theme song. That song is, “American Woman,” (1970) by The Guess Who… and guess what. They were a Canadian Rock band. ;-) https://youtu.be/9uf6EY2BZBw?si=GJtAYJCPy-cSSTxH Also, for the film’s soundtrack, Lenny Kravitz covered the tune, and reinvigorated the bad-assness of this song for a new generation. A music video was made, featuring Heather Graham and Felicity Shagwell’s American Flag painted 1966 Chevy Corvette Stingray. https://youtu.be/UzWHE32IxUc?si=L9jnGn1ZxTT2VthS (-: God Bless America… and Canada too ;-) — The song, “I’ll Never Fall in Love Again,” sung by Elvis Costello and accompanied by Burt Bacharach… Music by Burt Bacharach, Lyrics by Hal David… Popularized by Dionne Warwick, who released the hit single in 1969… here she is singing with Glen Campbell… https://youtu.be/RvYP9lgp9oo?si=5cakaVw_9ifRs14- Originally written for the 1968, Neil Simon, Broadway musical… Promises, Promises. Based on the 1960, Billy Wilder film, The Apartment. Originally performed by Broadway musical stars, Jill O’Hara and Jerry Orbach, as the characters of Fran Kubelik and Baxter. https://youtu.be/h4Ljt6e9TaA?si=y63T5_zjdly_xnU3 Yep, that’s Jerry Orbach… Baby’s Father in Dirty Dancing (1987) and Detective Lennie Briscoe from Law & Order (1992 - 2003). (-: I’m sure this comes as no surprise to anyone. Everyone knows that Jerry Orbach was the voice of Lumiere in Beauty and the Beast (1991) right? ;-) https://youtu.be/ehy-b8Vse1c?si=RkwCnpQmdBvnjbCK&t=3m24s Bonus: Dionne Warwick and Glen Campbell accompanied by Burt Bacharach for a… Bacharach Medley. https://youtu.be/t0rZEi_lT-o?si=zlfPu_nlZSrg5qI8 Did you catch a little bit of “I Say a Little Prayer,” in there? Music and Lyrics also by Burt Bacharach and Hal David. Here’s Dionne Warwick on the Ed Sullivan Show, in case you missed it. https://youtu.be/dERmrf48qe4?si=i1-RDo4b26RSKbfA and let’s not forget, “Raindrops Keep Fallin’ on My Head,” from Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969), sung by B.J. Thomas, and Music and Lyrics by… Burt Bacharach and Hal David. https://youtu.be/_VyA2f6hGW4?si=hDQpp2sdwE_qIJKh and just for more sideways fun… Jerry Orbach performing “All I Care About,” from Chicago, at the 1976 Tony Awards. https://youtu.be/oF0I-9p_yDM?si=NIJv-8Pt6cRDcAc4 Lastly… another song produced for the Spy Who Shagged Me film and its soundtrack… “Beautiful Stranger,” by Madonna. Austin Powers himself makes an appearance in this video, as well as another “little” cameo. https://youtu.be/Dsh0TfIKhoE?si=Nb7uNFpLJMw9l66X Here’s to Austin Powers in Goldmember (2002) in the future… and seriously though. Some more Comedies. You wear them well ;-)

Robert da Spruce

Fun reaction Cassie! You’re absolutely right! This movie had a big impact on pop culture. With many lines and references still used today. Did you recognize Rebecca Romijn? She played the other model (not Miss Humpalot 😂) But you might recognize her as Mystique in the X-men movies I wouldn’t mind seeing you react to the third installment 😊

Goony71

Totally agree. Like others have said, the opening credits reaction alone would be worth the watch not to mention the rest of the movie being fun and entertaining

Clay F

I would hold off another sequel poll for a while. if you do have another sequel poll, don't include Predator 2 (1990) ("The thrill of the hunt is gone.") -- it's a step down from Predator (1987).

Tinkerbell

Hi Casie, seeing as how you are enjoying Mike Myers, have you seen So I Married an Axe Murderer? It is really funny and Mike Myers is fantastic in it.

Mike Lemon

Good movie but it's on the "already watched" list- https://letterboxd.com/popcorn_in_bed/films/

V M

Does anyone else here think Robert's avatar is mesmerizing?

Clarence Newman

I'm with you on that one, Clay. They should have stuck with the unassailable original.

Clarence Newman

It's hard to recognise Rebecca Romijn with her clothes on, Robert. It doesn't match up with any of the pictures on my screensaver. As for the avatar, I just spent five minutes staring at it, and might still be doing so if my wife hadn't walked in. "Oi," she said. "Why are you looking at the screen the way Dan Aykroyd was looking at that painting of Vigo the Carpathian?"

Darren Harrison

Really enjoyed this watch-a-long, thanks for that Cassie. After thoroughly enjoying the first two Austin Powers movies I was totally turned off by the third movie. It had even more gross out humor but the gags felt flat the third time around. Though not quite as funny as the original, the “Airplane” sequel has some LOL moments.

V M

Is Stick Figure Studios a business venture you run?

Johnny Bullis

I havent seen this since at least the early 2000's. And yes its funny that FB is the precursor for Shrek.. heck he even says donkey as FB. I actually met Mindy Sterling (Frau Farbissina) at a convention a few years back.. shes actually really nice. My son knew her from ANT Farm as principal Skidmore. Thanks for watching this one.. I loved your "I cant handle this crap" reaction when he was drinking the poop coffee.. a great pun indeed that Im sure you didnt think you were doing at the time. :)

Clay A

Each movie gets sillier and more fun, culminating in one of the best comedies ever, Goldmember... I'm a little disappointed you haven't watched these with Carly, since you went on your Bond adventure together, especially your epic watch of The Spy Who Loved me... maybe she could catch-up and join you for Goldmember?
