Any chance of the full version of Ep 6-7 soon?

I bought a very nice chess board and set because of this series.

I joinedPIB for reviews of pre1995 movies but this is an example of something I would never have seen on my own, and I like it. You do great work Cassie.

Chess had special significance during the Cold War. Both the United States and the Soviets saw dominance in chess as a means of displaying the superiority of their respective systems. That's why it was such a big deal when the American Bobby Fischer defeated the Russian world champion Boris Spassky in 1972.

Thank you for this, I have been enjoying re-watching this series with you. Chess is also a reminder of my father. He gave me my love and appreciation for the game. My dad loved the game and was really good at it. He would actually play games sometimes with people where he would sit facing away from the board and the person he was playing would tell him what moves he was making and my dad would just play the game in his head. I also found out after my dad passed away that he played with one of his old friends from the Air Force after they retired. But they would play by phone. Every few weeks they would play over a few hours over the phone, each keeping the moves on a chess board they had. He had a board in his bedroom that he kept and told me to never touch it. I didn't think anything of it until his old friend told me at my dad's funeral about their game.

I love this series - for the human drama, for the look into the world of chess at that level, and for the time-machine trip back to the '60s. You will love the last two episodes, too. I was on the chess team in high school - I wasn't unusually good; I was ranked eighth out of 15 or so, which put me exactly in the middle of the pack. The scene where Beth psyched her opponent out by getting up and walking away after each move made me laugh aloud. The best player on our team, by far, was a good friend of mine, and he was not only good enough to play the rest of the team simultaneously and beat us all, he pulled stunts like that. He would show up for a match with another school in a purple velvet suit (this was the '70s) wearing a matching hat with a big feather in it. When the games were started he would move if he were playing white and then stand up, or get up as the other player was making their move if he had black. He would go find a vending machine and get a Coke, then walk around looking at everyone else's games, all while his clock was running; he'd get back to his own, make a move without even sitting down, and wander off again. He'd do that several times, and then when he got back he'd look at his opponent's last move and burst out laughing, move again, and walk away laughing and shaking his head. Finally, maybe a dozen moves in, he'd sit down and start playing seriously. By that time his opponent would usually be in a pretty hopeless position, and would almost always be so rattled they couldn't concentrate. The best and most competitive chess I ever got to experience was at the Marine Corps Mountain Warfare Training Center at Bridgeport, California (near Yosemite National Park, not far from Tahoe. Beautiful area.) My unit had just come out of the field and had a couple of days of idle time in the barracks, and a few guys had brought their travel chess sets. We got a little tournament going, and it was the most focused and intense and, I think, the best chess I ever played and played against. Searching For Bobby Fischer is excellent, too.

Really sucks that the kids aren’t feeling well and you had to miss the live premiere, but silver lining I guess that the finale couldn’t be spoiled for you in the YouTube comments. As long as no on here does, you should be home free.

Bobby Fischer is an American hero. His later years were rather iffy though.

Anthony Perez

I've just noticed that the shots of Beth in bed with the shadows of the pieces covering her body...in the shot after she goes to the all-girls party, the song playing is "You're the One" and the shot of Beth in bed has the shadow of ONE piece looming over her. Later in another shot it's multiple pieces that make it look like prison bars. And I am not sure that it is that she LOVES chess as much as it's a natural function , like breathing...you don't think about it. She even says in interview that she likes the control over the board. So it's not so much chess she loves but the feeling that she is in control of something. Childhood trauma has made her feel that she controls nothing.

Björn Von Knorring

Genius and madness is sometimes very hard to distinguish. And a genius can find a "loophole" for use of its high IQ for a while before the madness-part takes over.

David Thibodeau

Searching for Bobby Fisher is a great movie about a young boy who discovered chess. It's one of about 100 movies that has a 100% tomatometer score
