This is the one I've been waiting for since ya'll started Book 3. Cannot wait to watch this when I get home

Knight Spearhead

Correct at the end there Ken. To quote a old saying, "The road to hell is often paved with good intentions"

I think Roku stayed behind to battle the volcano to try and save the village portion of the island. He made what was essentially a cut in the island to try to keep it from the end where the people were. And while we saw some boats in the water that doesn't necessarily mean that that was everyone who lived there. Toph said that there were hundreds of homes buried under the ash so I definitely expected more boats. Roku could have been trying to buy time for everyone to escape. One of the sad things about it is that Roku was most likely not in the position to be able to tell if everyone was off the island or not. And even if they were, the poisonous gases and falling flaming rocks still posed a huge risk so it left him with no real choice, he either had to stop the volcano completely, keep it a bay for as long as he could, or just flee and pray that they paddled away fast enough. It was an awful situation and it was made even worse by Firelord Sozin leaving him to die. I think Sozin regretted what he did in the end. At least, that was the tone I heard in his last testament. He talked about thinking of a time when "everything was so much brighter", which I took to mean that he knew that his actions had thrown the world into chaos and that he didn't like how it was turning out. He didn't regret it enough to try to put an end to it, but it still sounds like he wished it had gone differently. He was a jerk for trying to conquer the world just to spread the "prosperity of the Fire Nation", but Ozai (Zuko's dad) is still worse because he wants to conquer just for the sake and thrill of conquering.

One of my favorite episodes. Learning that Zuko was/is related to Aang in a past life was a crazy twist. Like Uncle Iroh said, he has good and bad always playing tug of war with one another. Just such good writing. Been waiting for this episode and enjoyed it like always.

I presume that all of the villagers would have died if Roku had left, even though they are in the water. When the lava reaches the water, there’s still a possibility it could affect them, it could still reach them but it would most likely lead to a steam explosion. If they are far enough to survive that, they would also have to deal with debris, toxic gases, volcanic ash, and potentially large waves/tsunami. Roku redirected the lava, and along with Sozin, simmered the volcano down. I’m not sure if these factors influenced his/the writers' decision to stay, but I tend to think logically and seek reason in most situations. However I could be wrong and it could just be a cool and dramatic death.

Zuko being related to Avatar Roku was a crazy plot twist. Iroh’s last push to make Zuko choose if he wants his path be like one of his Great Grandfather’s. A path like Avatar Roku or Firelord Sozin.

What you said at the beginning of the commentary Ken reminds me a whole lot from Pain in Naruto. You remember from the Storm series that Pain wanted to bring peace to the world by creating more pain and getting everybody to understand peace, but all this did was create the main antagonists of the series that caused more atrocities in the Naruto world. Pain felt like a god needing to change the world, similar to what Souzin did here in this episode. Power can corrupt, but absolute power can corrupt absolutely is the theme I also see here
