Looks like you used the playlist I made! Glad that I could help out with the channel in some small way.

I don't really have any attachment to what wins the awards at shows like Keighley's TGA since the jury is mostly made up of games media outlets who haven't played every noteworthy title within the year, and the rules for what gets nominated seem to get looser as each year comes. Games that aren't indie games get nominated for best indie, and DLC being nominated as GOTY this year has really burnt away any value I placed in the awards themselves. That being said, I do think the awards matter to an extent because they help games and creators get more exposure to the mainstream audience and casual gamers (such as yourselves).

While I would've been cool with any of the nominees getting the GOTY award this year (except Erdtree bc it's DLC, not a game), I'm so happy that Astro Bot won. It helps enforce the idea that a game doesn't need to be some lengthy cinematic production to be considered among the best and that all a game should need to be considered phenomenal is polish, heart, and fun game mechanics. I'm not part of the crowd that says "games aren't fun at all anymore" since I'm a core gamer who follows both the AAA and indie scene across plenty of genres, but Astro Bot really was a breath of fresh air compared to most of the PS5 exclusives we've gotten thus far. Its marketing cycle is also something I gotta shout out to. Only about 3 months between the initial announcement and the full release of a game that works like it should (and with free DLC to boot). More of that, please.

Alright, I guess I should actually give some specifics about this game, shouldn't I 😃? Astro Bot is a 3D platformer that was developed the studio "Team Asobi". Team Asobi was originally a team of developers at Sony Japan Studio, but became their own internal studio for PlayStation after Japan Studio dissolved. As with most 3D platformers, the story a incredibly simple. A crew of Astro Bots are partying in space as they fly in their PS5 mothership across space. The ship is destroyed by an alien, and you spend the most of the game collecting the different PS5 components and crew members as the player's Astro Bot goes through various levels so you can repair the mothership and fight the alien. The game uses an unparalleled amount of ingenuity when it comes to taking advantage of the DualSense's features (haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, gyro controls, etc) in the form of power-ups and brilliant level design. About the "crude humor", it's nothing too wild. The ESRB website's description makes note of some stages having pigeons that leave several bird droppings. The game rating system has always been a strange thing in terms of standards. As you probably noticed from the different cameos of characters, Astro Bot also serves as a celebration of PlayStation's history. So many cool references to PS games and hardware, no matter how new or old, and no matter how popular or obscure. If these trailers got your attention, I highly recommend playing Team Asobi's predecessor to this game, "Astro's Playroom". It comes pre loaded/free with every PS5, so if you've got a PS5 you've got Playroom. It basically served as a glorified tech demo for the DualSense, but ended up getting so much praise that Team Asobi was given a chance to adapt it into a bigger game (Astro Bot). For a metric on how long these games take, here are my hours for each after doing everything (all DLC, getting the Platinums, etc.) Astro's Playroom: 7 hrs Astro Bot: 16 hrs I don't say stuff like this often, but I promise that you'll enjoy Astro Bot/Astro's Playroom. The only way I can see someone not liking this game is if they're just allergic to quality 3D platformers. Sorry for gushing. Just really glad that this game exists, and that it's getting the recognition it deserves.

8:32 One last thing, honest 😆! You'll probably be hearing this a lot on YT, but during their acceptance speech for TGA, Team Asobi actually gave tribute to Mario and briefly talked about the influence it had on them as creators. They were very careful not to mention Nintendo by name though, most likely out of concern that Sony wouldn't take too kindly to them thanking their competitor so openly on stage. I'll leave the link for the speech here: https://youtu.be/4FVYoM-h6fc?si=vM2vfkic7Z1qJbbI It's a funny watch, and it's always good to see these developers getting the glory for putting out such quality work like Astro Bot.

Theres over 160 bots you can rescue in the game based on Playstation properties and characters who have appeared on the Playstation. Astro Bot is just simply a joyous fun platformer that bleeds creativity

Ah, the current game that has a lot of people loving or hating it because it won “Game of the Year”. For someone that played a lot of PlayStation games back in the early 2000’s, it’s a fantastic platformer that is just all about fun. Just cute robots and fun platforming.
