The Expanse is off to an amazing start! I was blown away by the world building and I absolutely love the pacing of the story so far. I am hooked and can't wait to see where this show goes from here!

Welcome to my full reaction of The Expanse! Seeing as this is the first episode of the series I've made this available for everyone! You will need your own copy of the episode to watch along, I bought the series on Fandango at Home.

I upload these episodes to Patreon, but some people prefer the youtube video player so I also provide a YouTube link as well.

Enjoy!

This show is based on a book series by "James S.A. Corey," which is actually a pen name for two guys who have done a whole bunch of sci-fi and fantasy stories, both together and on their own. And unlike something like Game of Thrones or Outlander, the show's crew takes a pretty free hand in their adaptation choices right from the start, the biggest one right now being that Avasarala actually wasn't introduced until the second book, but was so popular by the time the show was made that they decided to add a storyline about what she was up to during this time. Which also isn't really a spoiler about how long you can expect her to stick around, because another way it differs from those other shows is that despite following the same general plot beats of the books, there's also not really any effort to have the events of each book match up with a certain season. It can get a bit odd if you already know the books, but from what I've seen, people who don't know them still find the season stories pretty natural. The big hook that "Corey" started with here is that rather than either of the two typical settings for space-faring sci-fi, showing either the very start of humans entering the larger galaxy or just being set at a point when we're already long established as a space-going people, this series catches human society somewhere in between, still mostly confined to our own solar system and with resources a huge issue before we can go further. And there's an incredible amount of thought put into what that society would look like, and what kinds of stories you can tell with it. And starting out with a hard-boiled film noir IN SPACE was a great choice to start out, giving the audience a comfortable-feeling setup before we move on to the really wild stuff. Thomas Jane makes for a great Bogart stand-in and I was hooked instantly. And trust me, it just gets better from here.

LOVE you’re watching this show. Was a big fan of the books and have been waiting for the perfect reason to watch the show. Shall be watching along with ya!

I technically could sign into my dad’s account, but I haven’t done so in a while. I heard they added Ads unless you pay more per month and so I just figured I wouldn’t worry about it. I don’t like being subscribed to streaming services so if I can get the media elsewhere I probably will. Sometimes if I have several things at once that are on a streaming service I might hop on though.

Ah, okay. The Expanse is included with Amazon Prime, so I was surprised you had purchased it because I thought you had an account. I don't know if there are ads in it or not, and that would obviously be a no for reaction videos.

R

Yeah, Amazon added a no-ads tier. I think it's like $3 extra per month? I don't pay it though. I don't watch that much Prime content and when I do, I just use the ad breaks to grab a snack or check my phone or whatever. It has more ads than I thought it would though–about as much as typical broadcast programming.

Can’t believe this won over Breaking Bad… lol especially considering it didn’t even get a resolution, it was just canceled… 🤷‍♂️

Sean Zaccheo

I do hope you give BB a shot after this. Definitely one of if not the best shows in television history with a fully mapped out story that was meant to span exactly as many seasons as it had!

I'm glad you're watching this one because I'm going to need your commentary because I had a hard time with the first few episode. I may have made it to the fifth one. Watching these shows with you are fun

A LOT of people bounce off the first 2 or 3 episodes, especially since they are so heavily focused on world building. By the 4th you have a much better idea of the series but I really think it’s a show that gets better every season (except maybe season 4, that one isn’t bad it’s just a different enough arc from the others that it’s usually not a favorite season). Hope you find more you like in it, it’s a really fantastic show I’d say is worth giving it as much chance as you can but no show can work for everybody!

RocktSurgeon

It.. didn’t get canceled and did get a resolution just to be clear. Well, ok it technically did briefly get canceled after season 3 but was revived (and stronger) with the move to Amazon. To be clear for anyone reading this, it does have a solid resolution to the majority of plot line and after the book equivalent to the last season there was a very substantial time skip so it is no different in unresolved plot lines than the books had.

Sean Zaccheo

Everything I’ve read says it was canceled after season six due to budget constraints and lower viewership and therefore wasn’t able to adapt the final three novels, leaving unresolved storylines.

Emi Seino

I don’t see how the final novels could have been made into this tv series because of the huge time jump. It wasn’t cancelled, there is an ending of sorts. As a fan, I would have loved move episodes, but the entire series is brilliant storytelling

Sean Zaccheo

I don’t understand why everyone keeps saying it wasn’t canceled when it was… and I mean beyond the first cancelation after season 3. Everything I’ve found says it was likely due to budget constraints and lower viewership and that’s why there was no season 7. Not saying it’s a bad show, but that’s just what’s on record. 🤷‍♂️

Welcome! I'm really loving the show so far. I'm not sure I've ever seen anything like it in terms of pacing, but it is so compelling.
