Ah, young love in Venice what could wrong? I’m sure there won’t be any vampire aliens to contend with. I am pretty content with where this episode landed in the grand scheme of things.

This is where it officially got old for me how much the show pulled the “these aren’t monsters, just an alien species that happens to look and act EXACTLY like some kind of classic monster” card. And it really doesn’t help that Karen Gillan delivers the line “They’re aliens!” as if that’s the last thing she ever expected to encounter while traveling with the Doctor. Makes me appreciate all the more that Torchwood was willing to say “Yeah, these are fairies. No twist.”

The best part of this episode is the late, great Helen McCrory as Rosanna Calvierri (taken from us much too soon). The scene between her and the Doctor, question for a question, is absolutely fantastic. It's so playful, and the chemistry between the two of them is palpable.

I don’t agree that it’s a negative aspect of the show, but I also DO quite like that Torchwood straight up went “yep fairies exist, is that really so strange in this world??”. And I mean, the witches from S3 were aliens, but they weren’t exactly “aliens who seem to have every trait but aren’t actually witches”, they were definitely real witches!!
