A really fantastic episode, but my write up here has to be made up primarily of “NOOOOOOOOOOO”. There has rarely been a more Torchwood choice than the way this episode ended.

This actually marks the end of RTD's contributions to the season, as (quite tragically ironically given the major themes of the story) his partner Andrew Smith was discovered to have a brain tumor and he had to drop out to spend more time with him. Smith passed away shortly afterwards, and RTD's next series Years and Years was dedicated to him. Jane Espenson, best known for her work on Buffy and Angel, had already been writing a good deal of it and now took over completely.

I noticed her name on the credits actually and I remember thinking I have enjoyed most everything I've seen her write. It's a shame RTD have to leave under such terrible circumstances.

Vera was the best of the new characters to the new show, so to lose her was so devastating. But, knowing Torchwood, something tells me that was on purpose. I don't agree in the slightest with them burning them, especially when there's people who clearly are conscious, but there's a small part of me that kind of understands the logic of needing to do something when they are running out of space, and if you have people who are truly brain dead, with no chance of recovery, is it maybe akin to taking them off life support? But then earlier on in the series we saw someone detached from their body still move their eyes. We saw the dead is dead lady become a squishy and she blinked. They have a consciousness. If there's one thing Torchwood knows how to do, it's make me think "what would I do if I was in charge of the worst situation that humanity could possibly face?" because there is no good outcome. I felt that way with the politicians in Children of Earth.

Great points! I could 100% see scenarios where the logic of burning them makes total sense and it says something that even though the modules were in place they hadn't issued orders to use them yet. There is definitely an added layer of middle management incompetence mixed with trying to find quick solutions that is adding to the horror here. It's kind of hard to imagine what the good solutions are, to be honest.

Torchwood is brutal. Torchwood likes to hurt its audience But I think that's why it's such a powerful show. The audio dramas go the same way with things just been so dark and kinda real. Like... I don't trust that this kind of stuff wouldn't happen if things like the miracle or children of earth happen.
