The highest level of storytelling.... I don't even know what to say.

Since everyone is gonna praise arnheid’s death as they should, let me just say how underrated side character Thorgil is. Pulling up like that, killing special guards of canute and then almost killing the king was something else.

Bautista

It is seriously a shame how many people dropped shows like this and steins gate bc of how "slow and boring" they are. It's nice to see people appreciate these kinds of stories

Thorfinn "I could take a 100 men" Karlsefni

Tyler Owens

This show is a masterpiece and especially season 2… the show is peaking now in my opinion and I hope you enjoy the ride.

Szayel H

I'm suprised he could swim with the weight of those massive balls of steel

V STAN

Vinland Saga is a masterpiece

Ginger Ale

Nothing short of perfection.

Frizen

Anime has done irreparable damage to Tony when it comes to the possibility of someone dying lol XD

Jet Man

Thorfinn was standing there and realized Einar was just like him. That he would repeat history. But he knew they could not judge the right from wrong. In time, I think both will agree. That violence breeds violence. But in the end, it has to be this way.

TheGoblerTrainsMovinIn

Ive definitely had the feeling after finishing an anime "How am I ever gonna find something as good as this?" But eventually you find something else out there that gives you the same feeling and it's great

Anorus

I think the whole only 100 men thing wasn't necessarily saying that he might violate his principles. I thought his attitude was more a callback to the scene in season 1 where Thors casually takes down most of Askeladd's men without seriously injuring them, and only dies because he had to protect the villagers and his son. Thorfinn is basically asserting that he's at that point.

Lixien

I love how we have that realistic animation of those two fighting (probably rotoscoping) and then Snake comes and goes I'M AN ANIME CHARACTER IM FAST AS FUCK BOI SWOOOSH

Xan Acktor

A couple days to the next episode. But its going to feel like a long couple days. Besides Attack on Titan as honorable mention i still haven't found better story telling than Vinland Saga in anime. I wish this show has more. Time to read the manga again. On a side note its crazy this show has hardly any official merch sales. I would have spent some good money to show more support.

Wenson Liu

Context for my favorite fun fact of this show. the monologue before thorfinn clenched his fist was him remembering what canute said long ago before they saw the king. Canute was saying how he was willing to "turn into a demon" in order to consolidate power and bring peace to the world. The last sentence he said back in season 1 during that speech is "Ill never forgive him" in regards to God, who he claims is looking down at all the chaos in the world. Thorfinn was probably to obsessed with revenge to ever understand Canute back then, Now he is starting to understand where Canute is coming from.

Wenson Liu

and the actual little fun fact is that monologue in season 1 also occurs in episode 20 just as it does in episode 2 of this season when thorfinn recalls it

Belac

Einar was like "TONY! You! You skipped episode 21! I'll kill you! I'LL FUCKING KILL YOU!!!"

Legend of the galactic heroes(one from the 80’s, 110 eps) would be my recommendation if u want good storytelling and haven’t watched it already. For me personally it reaches the level of AOT and Vinland saga.

Xan Acktor

The show finished 2 years after i was born... AHHH. How has the animation aged? I love good animation because i used to animate.

Isaac Noël

I REALLY hope you do decide to continue with the manga after you finish this season. It's truly a fantastic read.

Parampreet Singh

Well actually uhh how do I say this. I don’t think the animation aged the best compared to some other old gems. It doesn’t have any martial art type of combat so it didn’t bother me but since ur in the field of animating some scenes might bug u

Xan Acktor

I dont doubt you that its a very good anime. I think my attention span might just go out the window....would you look at that...its a cloud the shape of a face....... Regardless how i feel i added it to my anime list. I would like to watch it someday.

Parampreet Singh

See I can tell ur an animator through and through i don’t even look at clouds in anime with that much attention😭 but hey as long as u put it on the list I am fine with it lol

James

Slow pacing is needed in a story for carefully building the world and characters. Once you reach a episode such as this one, the impact will feel more real and will hit the core.

James

When Yukimura started the story for Vinland Saga, he was 29 years old, and he is now 48 years old where he is still writing new chapters in the manga. The amount of patience he has in his story writing is tremendous, and really does a good job of connecting readers and viewers to the characters in the story.

Budoy

At 13:29 when you said "Its better" I remember my grandfather that it would be best for him to just die than to live with sickness.

Sorry in advance for the essay I know I'm not good at summarizing my thoughts in a concise way for stuff like this. For a sorta TL:DR the first and last paragraph should do fine. While Vinland is undeniably peak storytelling especially in the anime medium I promise there are a solid number of others out there that are as good if not comparable in level of narrative and overall quality, though Vinland is absolutely right up there with the best. I know it's seemingly extremely unlikely considering how great this series is and how much you're clearly invested in it but I promise there are other anime you might end up getting to that brings out similar or the same feelings of engagement/narrative satisfaction depending on how many you end up seeing and how diverse of series you end up gravitating towards. While I haven't seen a series that brings out that feeling of love for a narrative with the same methods Vinland does, I have definitely seen a decent number of others that are bare minimum comparable in quality of the overall package/narrative. Some of the series at this level of storytelling are the kinds of things I think a lot people yourself included would likely feel the same about to at minimum a similar degree (possibly more possibly less depending on your taste in stories/themes/presentation) and others are definitely a case of them being clearly amazing but just not for everyone's taste like for example my hands down favorite story of all time (both its anime and books) the Monogatari series. It's one of those where there is a lot understandable reasons why Monogatari wouldn't be for everyone but you'd be hard pressed to find someone who engaged with it enough and in its intended way that even if it wasn't their cup if tea would still say the quality of what it specifically does is at minimum fantastic to near perfection (easy example of what I'm talking about is I personally don't enjoy the Godfather series a whole lot but absolutely understand why its largely considered one of the greatest film series ever). As for why people tend to get this similar feeling with Monogatari is largely due to things like it's sexualization (which is in ways I totally understand people not being down for but for me personally due it's context and execution am not only okay with but at some times appreciate), avante garde surrealist qualities, it being no exaggeration 99% dialogue and for lack of a better way to put it deeply Japanese qualities (which is the actual on record reason for why it has no official English dub because so much of it's dialogue just doesn't translate either well or at all without losing its intent, subs do a damn good job still). I doubt Monogatari will ever show up on this channel which is understandable but some other series that I think have a much better chance ending up here that might end up being in at least some ways and likely new ways the degree of overall levels of satisfaction that Vinland offers would be series like Neon Genesis Evangelion (including End of EVA movie), Mushishi, Monster and From the New World as well as some others I've personally seen and likely others I haven't. Aside from the ones I already mentioned I really hope for some other series that may be in the general realm of overall satisfaction that is Vinland Saga will end up being considered or better yet show up on polls or in the best case scenario end up watching would include Serial Experiments Lain, Madoka Magica (don't let the cover fool you), March Comes in Like a Lion, Kino's Journey (original from 2003), Dororo, Heike Monogatari, Devilman Crybaby, Odd Taxi, Kill La Kill, Golden Kamuy and Sonny Boy. Either way I'm sure Tony and everyone here will end up getting to either rewatch or see for the first time more series at Vinland Saga's general level especially if aiming for truly special series and series that longtime/extensive anime fans typically call "mandatory viewing" is something that sticks. I get the strong feeling that Neon Genesis Evangelion will be the most likely of these to end up being watched at some point, which is great because it has absolutely earned it's near universal acclaim and place as a staple of the anime zeitgeist for damn good reason.

d_swordfish

Oh, Kino's Journey! What a nice pick. Definitely on it. I agree here, Vinland Saga is great but it's not the only good anime. I guess we are able to pick up something good after Vinland. Reality: Some FMAB-like wins next poll....

Loayza

VS, S;G and Monogatari are my top 3. Monogatari definitely has great storytelling and the emotional and psychological development of its characters is peak. But as you say it's not for everyone, although I'd love Tony to watch it (he reacted to étoile et toi, the ending of Kizumonogatari, a while ago and he loved it, so I think musically it would be worth it too) I'm pretty sure he wouldn't be able to handle those scenes. But I'm hopeful that in a few years he'll get to the level where he can watch it without any problems haha. Edit: He also reacted to Mathemagics

Levi Blair

@Loayza Monogatari definitely takes a certain amount of tolerance/acceptance of what it's doing that like you said you have to either grow into or just become accustomed to. It's brilliant through and through but I still totally understand why it's not for everyone's taste or agreeable in content even if it's context does justify almost all of it. All of your top 3 are in my top 10 as well and Tony's already got around to 2 of them so here's hoping one day Monogatari comes around and doesn't get the boot, because God damn is it good eating with the dialogue, overall writing and animation/art direction also the music is damn good even the ambient bgm tracks. On a possibly more realistic hope I'm still gunning for Evangelion because it's absolutely monumental for good reason, that or Monster because well it's Monster it's just plain amazing.

Levi Blair

@d_swordfish we still have Stein's;gate going for after Vinland ends so at least there is that but I'm still really hopeful in a (hopefully) realistic way looking for Evangelion, Kino's Journey or Monster to show up because they are right up this alley just in very different ways and Evangelion is just plain monumental and essentially mandatory viewing for anime fans.

Andrea Gagliano

+1 for March Comes in Like a Lion, Chica umino is a very talented author, one of the few that really understands how feelings work

Before this ends, could you tell us if you ever had to stop someone from doing something stupid?

I want to second the idea that there is other anime that can compare to Vinland Saga, I wouldn't shout out Monogatari personally though, but that's just my personal preference. Run with the Wind would be a good suggestion. It's my favorite sports anime of all time, and I don't know if DRT has seen any sports anime yet to date. Ping Pong is also a good recommendation. Both of these manage to use masterful storytelling and character development to build highly emotional narratives. They don't have the seriousness or heaviness of war, but are still excellent. I also recently finished Overtake!, which while I wouldn't put it on the same level as RWTW, it has some more serious themes it explores very well, while also being a sports anime. Other recommendations from my top anime of all time are To Your Eternity, Black Lagoon, Frieren, Jellyfish Can’t Swim in the Night, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, Space Brothers, and Sound of the Sky. I think the thing that's hard to find is a long-running serialized series like Vinland Saga, which is telling an epic narrative, while also maintaining a more serious narrative setting. There just isn't much executed on this level in the anime medium, you have to go to manga to find that (Berserk, Vagabond, etc). I definitely think shorter series have a lot to offer though.
