"Too Good Too Bad" is the piece that plays at the end of episode 4 during the chase. It's such a fun time on every listen. The one with Tubas and the New Orleans feel. https://youtu.be/6q7mtr4cWyo?si=clIwX4gBGII0ubcQ

Leonard Martinez

Episode 5 is many people's favorite in the series.

After watching this if you still like it; Samurai Champloo is similar but Bebop is better of course (it's like the Code Geass after watching Death Note). I need to snob out real quick lol Evangelion (don't recommend; even though i love it. it's my pfp), Gundam (don't recommend), Cowboy Bebop, and Attack on Titan are in most people's favorites Kaiba (dont recommend), Monster (you might like), Ghost in the Shell (maybe?), Akira (maybe?), Baccano! (i think you'll love this show), and especially Clannad (very highly DONT RECOMMEND) fell off in popularity in time but used to be considered all time greats Gurren Lagann (maybe?), Cyber Punk, and Jobless Reincarnation (i hate this show but you may like it if you can stomach the cringe) are somewhere in the middle. In the process of falling off but who knows what the reception is gonna be in the future

44:47 - The piece that plays here is called "Green Bird" and it gave me tingles through my body hearing it here again in its original context. I cannot believe I forgot this is where it originated. It's been used in other places, probably because this scene from Cowboy Bebop is so iconic. https://youtu.be/EL7e5XrzanA?si=pZnBhUM3y3TVfJr0 My favorite type of shows have always been the ones with mature storytelling, such as Vinland Saga and Cowboy Bebop (despite occasional goofiness). If Yoko Kanno is winning you over, it should be a fine day when Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex comes around. It's my #1. Mature storytelling and Yoko Kanno on the credits as a composer. It was the prime example to argue against that "anime is for kids" notion for someone I know. See you, space cowboy.

Red Menace

lol, up an hour, already 4 comments(now 5) and 20 likes, and we know we in for a ride, lets go

Cowboy Bebop is truly an All-time great

JoeyGuy7

I wonder if one of the shorter Lupin series might be a good fit, similar older style. Maybe the Fujiko spinoff

JoeyGuy7

Also I totally agree on the point about bringing the music front and center for the establishing shots and then fading it out. I remember in oshi no ko it had such fun little themes but they all played during dialogue so I had to crank it to hear anything, this show isnt afraid to just chill and pan the camera while the themes play

Tris

I wouldn't say Samurai Champloo is similar to Code Geass in any way really but I do agree it would be a nice follow up to Bebop or even Space Dandy would be fun as both are by the same creator as Bebop. Basically, Champloo if you want a hip hop samurai vibe and Dandy if you want a futuristic disco themed Johnny Bravo as a space alien bounty hunter

Alejandro Pupo

Honestly this wasnt my favorite shit back when I first watched but watching it again this shit is just too fun

Alejandro Pupo

I would not compare Samurai Champloo to Code Geass at all LOL. Definitely recommend Samurai Champloo though after finishing Bebop. Same director, same kind of vibe with and story structure, except taking place during samurai times. The big thing with Champloo is that we get the beginnings of Lo-Fi from the father of the genre Nujabes. Genuinely one of the best soundtracks ever made for anime for a show thats also just pretty fun (Also the main character is the same voice actor for Spike in the English dub!)

Red Menace

i dont think they were saying the show is like code geass in any way, i think they were saying its like watching a really great show, then watching a less great show afterwards lol.

Red Menace

glad i waited to watch ep 5 till after i finished the violet evergarden show, those last 3 episodes aren't as gut punching as 10, but some relief is needed

Red Menace

Was looking forward to the ep 5 reaction, as others have said its kinda like ep 10 of violet evergarden in that its one of the most memorable ep of the series for many reasons, also the music is the church, chefs kiss. Also obligatory reminder to watch the beebop movie between ep 22 and 23. also laughed at tony's reaction to valentines flirting with spike after he woke up injured.

Brendan Coen

Ep hooked me when I first watched. What a great experience

Hermit

It's one of those shows where I feel a little empty once its done, it was so special and it raised the bar so high it's hard to watch anything else after

AussieBoy

Rewatching this show with you for the first time in years and man it holds up even better than I imagined. The exchange between Spike and Vicious towards the end of ep 5 is so good their performances are top notch

AntonJ0™

God bless classic hand drawn Cel Animation. I love the classics they don't do it like this

kinetic98

42:53 glad someone considered adding jiggle physics in 1998 for this show, flexing their animation skills

Glenn

Very much enjoying a rewatch, havent watched the dub before either. Still prefer the japanese version, but the dub is suprisingly good. Maybe Black Lagoon would be an anime that you'd like.

Isaac Noël

Bebop never misses, baby

Fuji Nami

Yea I didn't mean to compare Code Geass to Champloo lol. I just mean Death Note and Code Geass are similar as Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo are similar but obviously Death Note and Cowboy Bebop are nothing alike and same with the other two. Just their relationship are similar and the order anime fans tend to watch them ("death note is amazing, i need more like this!" people would recommend code geass / "cowboy bebop is amazing, i need to fill this hole" people would recommend champloo. People watch the first cause of how popular it is then the second to kinda fill that hole.

Matej Božič

I hope you will watch & react to Samurai Champloo. Personally, I regard it as having the same musical diversity and quality as Cowboy Bebop. With dope action scenes and story. Enjoying the Bebop journey though!

Layman's Outlook

Yoko Kanno is my favourite show composer. A lot of variety with a lot of character to it. Got something for every mood. Any show that has her is worth watching.

Lora

I only recently joined but one of my first thoughts when looking at your anime collections was where was Cowboy Bebop. I'm honestly baffled at how it hadn't won the polls earlier. It seemed like such an obvious recommendation. Really glad that you are watching it now and the timing worked out that I get to be a part of the patreon when it got picked!

With your discussion about live music recordings versus digital I think it's two things, bad compression just worsening audio quality with every layer of being uploaded and reuploaded from another upload, and that natural inconsistency of a real instrument. Especially for someone like you who has well trained ears, it has to be like the uncanny valley for what we see with our eyes when we're shown an attempt at replicating a real person's face with digital art. No matter how "real" it looks it lacks the true roughness of a real face, just like a digital instrument being used to you probably has an uncanny sound where your ears just know it's off because it's too smooth and too monotonously consistent. It lacks that natural quality. At least that's how I interpret what you were getting at.

Sam

Episode 5 is so damn good
